Treatment Of Pasireotide Lar-Associated Hyperglycemia In A Patient With Acromegaly, Cheryl Rosenfeld

Objective: Hyperglycemia was noted in pasireotide long-acting release (PAS LAR}-treated patients with acromegaly during clinical trials. We describe a clinical approach to hyperglycemia in a patient with acromegaly and diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) during PAS LAR initiation and treatment.

Methods: Clinical response to PAS LAR, including self­ monitored blood glucose (SMBG) levels, HbA1c, IGF-1, and adverse effects, was reported. Case Presentation: A 44-year-old male was referred for consultation in 2007 owing to uncontrolled DM2 despite maximum metformin (MET) dose. Testing led to a biochemical diagnosis of acromegaly. Background: Psoriasis is a multifactorial disease that effect approximately 7.5 million Americans. There are a variety of traditional treatments for psoriasis (e.g. topical medications, biologics) that for many, are effective in combating the disease. However, traditional treatments often have aversive side effects and may not be appropriate for every patient (e.g. pregnant women). Additionally, the efficacy of these medications are variable leaving some looking for adjunctive treatment options. There is increasing evidence to support the use of adjunctive treatments for psoriatic patients (e.g. psychotherapy, mindfulness). Non-Operative Management Of Hip Osteoarthritis, Ray Marks

Publications and Research

This paper reviews several non-operative and non-pharmacologic management strategies advocated for alleviating the pain and disability experienced by people with hip osteoarthritis. It analyzes whether painful debilitating hip osteoarthritis, which has no effective cure and is often progressive, may be affected positively by non-operative interventions designed to control osteoar- thritis pain. Finally, it provides an integrated plan of management for ameliorating hip osteoar- thritis pain and disability in light of this knowledge.

The Effect Of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment On Length Of Stay In Posterolateral Postthoracotomy Patients: A Retrospective Case Note Study, Regina K. Fleming, Karen T. Snyder, Kent J. Blanke, Jane C. Johnson

Objective

This study retrospectively evaluated the effect of OMT on length of stay (LOS) in hospitalized posterolateral postthoracotomy patients.

Methods

Inpatient medical records of patients who received posterolateral thoracotomies with lung resection between 1998 and 2011 were reviewed for demographic data, LOS, thoracotomy surgery data, consultation data excluding osteopathic manipulative medicine, discharge data, and osteopathic manipulative medicine consultation data.

Results

Thirty-eight patients received posterolateral thoracotomies with lung resection; 23 patients received OMT and 15 did not. The mean (standard deviation) LOS was 11.0 (6.8) days (range, 5–29 days) for those who received OMT and 10.4 (5.5) days (range, 3–22 days) …

Despite the fact that osteopathic research is essential for the continued advancement of our profession, such research is lacking. One barrier is the attainment of funding resources to launch and continue quality research studies. In the present article, the authors outline resources for the early stages of research and provide guidance for grant proposal preparation, if it is determined that external funding is needed. Free and low-cost resources for obtaining preliminary data and sources of external funds are described. An overview of grant writing and information on where to obtain training is presented. Introduction: Chronic back pain is a prevalent condition that is a leading cause of disability and a major financial obligation for both patients and the healthcare system. Disc herniation contributes to the growing number of back pain cases and determining the best course of care can present a challenge. Surgical intervention carries risks including a complication termed Failed Back Syndrome. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare and devastating disease characterized by progressive increases in pulmonary arterial pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance which eventually leads to right ventricular failure and death. Early thought process was that exercise and increased physical activity may be detrimental to PAH patients however many small cohort trials have proven otherwise. In addition to the many pharmaceutical options, exercise and pulmonary rehabilitation have also been shown to increase exercise capacity as well as various aspects of psychosomatic health.
