Background:

Concussion, a form of traumatic brain injury, often presents with sleep disturbances, headache, confusion, and memory impairment. Current treatment includes reduced screen time, physical activity, and increased rest. For decades, these treatment options have demonstrated improvement in symptoms. Recently, there is growing interest in whether using osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to target structural dysfunctions is more effective. This review compares OMT to conventional treatment methods in post-concussion patients.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterised by the breakdown of cartilage, causing pain, stiffness, and limited movement. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective management but remains challenging due to non-specific early symptoms. This study explores the application of Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) to classify OA patients and healthy volunteers based on biomarker concentrations of Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and Myeloperoxidase (MPO). DFA was employed to analyse biomarker data from 86 participants (58 patients, 28 volunteers) to evaluate the discriminatory power of these biomarkers in predicting OA. Cancer rehabilitation aims to address functional impairments resulting from both the disease itself and its treatments, striving to optimize physical, social, psychological, and vocational functioning. Existing literature indicates that PM&R services significantly benefit cancer patients by improving their overall quality of life. Many patients in the hospital require multiple medications to treat their medical concerns. While medications may be highly effective, they can cause a variety of side effects. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) can be used as an adjuvant therapy, potentially decreasing the number of medications that patients are on and their side effects. We present a unique case of a patient with intractable hiccups who could not be solely managed with medications alone. Piriformis syndrome has long been a diagnostic quandary due to its tendency to present as other nerve-related conditions. Piriformis syndrome is commonly caused by entrapment of the sciatic nerve as it travels through the greater sciatic foramen due to hypertrophy of the piriformis muscle. However, its constellation of symptoms, including radiating pain down the thigh, can easily be mistaken for lumbosacral radiculopathy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. This research seeks to examine the effects providing OMT along with traditional OUD pharmacological methods in providing results for patients. We present the case of a 20-year-old male patient with no cardiac history coming in for left sided chest pain described as “burning” sensation. On physical exam, it was noted that patient had hypertonic chest wall muscles that were tight and spastic when palpated on the left chest wall. We used Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) to help patient relieve hypertonic muscle. We chose to use muscle energy technique (MET) since this relies on reciprocal inhibition with the end result being relaxation of the target muscle.
