Lecture Capture, Transcripts, And Captioning In Us Colleges Of Osteopathic Medicine: Descriptive Cross-Sectional Survey, Phillip Khong, Duncan Holmes, Bahar Masoudian, Gregg C. Lund, Steve Garwood

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

This study describes lecture capture, transcription, and captioning services at US Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (COMs). An anonymous online survey was sent to Deans or Directors of Curriculum at all 34 fully accredited COMs, with 21 (62%) responding. Results showed widespread lecture recording (95%), but of those, there were varied transcript and caption offerings: 7 (33%) provided both, 5 (24%) offered closed captions only, and 3 (14%) offered transcripts only. Overall, 71% offered at least one service. These findings indicate the prevalence of these lecture services at US COMs and will assist COMs in benchmarking their practices.

Prior to being a medical student, a majority of pre-medical students have not encountered the course load intensity, academic rigor, and time management required by a medical school curriculum. Diversifying the workforce has been shown to have benefits, especially at the micro or patient level, since having racial or ethnic concordance between providers and patients has been associated with increased levels of satisfaction and improvements in certain clinical outcomes. Introduction: The usage of audio-visual aids in medical education has always been rewarding. This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of supplementing traditional dissection based laboratories with the video demonstration of specimens.

Methods: The study was conducted among first-year osteopathic medical students of two consecutive years. The laboratory demonstration videos were recorded and provided to the experimental group and the previous class served as the historical controls. Two Likert scale based questionnaires were completed by the experimental group before and after their final examination. Historical Postcards (1908-2007)

Postcard shows the front of the University of Health Sciences Administration Building. From 1917 to 1970 the building at 1750 Independence Avenue was occupied by Children’s Mercy Hospital. In 1971 it was purchased by the Alumni Association of the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and gifted to the college. In 1979, after extensive renovations it became the school’s administration building. The school’s name was changed in 1980 to the University of Health Sciences and today is known as Kansas City University.

The back of the postcard advertises the American Osteopathic Association's 1999 national convention and lists alumni events.

The back of the postcard reads: "The million dollar buildings of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy and Osteopathic Hospital, 48th and Spruce Streets -- Philadelphia, Pa., are located in a great medical metropolis, where unsurpassed clinical facilities and opportunities insure contact with a wide range of different diseases for diagnosis and treatment. Catalog on request."

The school is now known as Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM).

Historical Postcards (1908-2007)

Postcard shows a 1917 color rendering of Wesley Hospital at 11th and Harrison Streets in Kansas City, Missouri. Built in 1915 by Dr. Archie Robertson, it was taken over by the United States War Department in 1943.

In 1944 the Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery (now Kansas City University) purchased the hospital and renamed it Osteopathic Hospital. It was used as a teaching hospital until its closing in 1972 when the University opened the Center for Health Sciences, later known as University Hospital.
