The pillars of anatomical sciences, including neuroanatomy, have undergone massive shifts in their teaching methodologies in recent years. With the increased enrollment in graduate medical education, as well as the introduction of new technologies, the anatomical sciences have reformed the ways in which future healthcare practitioners learn. Among the challenges to neuroanatomical education have been reliable access to donor specimens, and a decrease in laboratory-based hours. This study evaluated the introduction of voluntary laboratory-based experiences within a first-year medical neuroanatomy course. Context: Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is often indicated for back pain due to its high tolerability and post-treatment improvement in patients’ self-reported pain and functionality. Specifically, myofascial release (MFR) has been found to yield a significant improvement in both symptoms and quality of life. Until recently, there has not been much data published about the quantifiable effect of MFR and other OMT modalities on muscle physiology, especially taking treatment dose and force into consideration. CONTEXT: Medical education in the United States has undergone significant changes, specifically within the osteopathic community. In 2020, a merger occurred between the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), forming a single accreditation system (SAS) for graduate medical education and residency placement, with the purpose to create consistency within graduate medical education and to provide equal opportunities for applicants pursuing all specialties in medicine. However, osteopathic medical students, especially students applying to competitive residencies including orthopedic surgery, have faced challenges, raising concerns about future implications within this field.

Many patients in the hospital require multiple medications to treat their medical concerns. While medications may be highly effective, they can cause a variety of side effects. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) can be used as an adjuvant therapy, potentially decreasing the number of medications that patients are on and their side effects. We present a unique case of a patient with intractable hiccups who could not be solely managed with medications alone. Context: Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) are physicians who are trained in the practice of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). OMT is a form of manual manipulation that can be applied to the patient’s body to aid the body in its own healing properties. The overprescribing and overuse of medication is currently a problem, as it can result in adverse consequences such as antibiotic resistance. Introduction: Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is highly researched and integrated into many medical and surgical subspecialties. Though OMM has been shown to have benefits in treating non-specific cervical and lower back pain and managing post-operative pain, it has rarely been integrated or studied in the neurosurgical community.

Method: Using SurveyMonkey, a survey was dispersed to physicians of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). We present the case of a 20-year-old male patient with no cardiac history coming in for left sided chest pain described as “burning” sensation. On physical exam, it was noted that patient had hypertonic chest wall muscles that were tight and spastic when palpated on the left chest wall. We used Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) to help patient relieve hypertonic muscle. We chose to use muscle energy technique (MET) since this relies on reciprocal inhibition with the end result being relaxation of the target muscle.

Globally, more than a quarter of pregnant patients experience low back pain (LBP) during pregnancy with additional complaints of pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and other somatic dysfunctions. Though the standard of care for LBP in pregnancy is often analgesics, concerns about potential side effects that may cause lasting harm to the fetus may preclude pregnant patients from taking pain medications. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a nonpharmacologic treatment option that is routinely used for LBP in non-pregnant patients. Given the low risk of adverse effects, OMM may prove to be beneficial for pregnant patients suffering from LBP or PGP.

At the height of the season, baseball and softball pitchers are playing 4-5 games a week and practicing on days without games. As a result, they put tremendous additive stress on their throwing shoulder and elbow joint.

This case utilized a novel, non-invasive osteopathic approach to improving shoulder mobility in a Division III athlete. If used on a regular basis, the shoulder mobility technique shows utility for athletes suffering from overuse injury. Our patient showed mild qualitative improvement, however they continue to use OMM as complementary treatment and describe a moderate qualitative improvement.

Attitudes Toward Osteopathic Medicine Scale: Development And Psychometrics, Mohammadreza Hojat Professor, Jennifer Desantis, Robert A Cain, Mark R Speicher, Lynn Bragan, Leonard H Calabrese

Objective: To develop a valid and reliable instrument for measuring attitudes toward osteopathic medicine.

Methods: Participants included 5,669 first-year students from 33 U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine, who completed an online survey at the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year. Using data from the nationwide Project in Osteopathic Medical Education and Empathy, we developed a 13-item instrument: Attitudes Toward Osteopathic Medicine Scale (ATOMS) and demonstrated the validity and reliability of its scores. The social desirability response bias was controlled in statistical analyses.
