Craniofacial Changes Resulting From Expansion Of The Midpalatal Suture In The Macaca Mulatta Monkey As Revealed By Roentgenographic Analysis, Raymond M. Sugiyama

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of midpalatal suture separation on the craniofacial complex by quantitative roentgenographic analysis.

Ten female Macaca mulatta monkeys were randomly grouped for experimentation. Six animals were paired in groups for two months of treatment, four months of treatment followed by two months of post retention, and six months of treatment. The four remaining monkeys were paired and served as control animals for two and six month periods. Total activation of the expansion appliances in the treated animals was completed over a three week period.

Modification of cephalometric roentgenographic procedures provided a means to identify the anterior borders of the right and left masseter muscles and relate them to surrounding dentoskeletal elements. Attachment of short, stiff, wires to the cheeks in a position superficial to the anterior borders of the muscles, subsequent to palpation and prior to exposure of the roentgenographic film, was the procedure used. The bi-lateral images projected on the film were averaged and traced along with dentoskeletal elements including those associated with skeletal type. Evaluation of the cephalograms of 150 patients showed a wide range in the angulation of the lower border of the mandible to the various facial planes. The degree of this angulation did not always correspond with the severity of malocclusion. Group I represents normal occlusions, Group II comprises malocclusions.

A new reference line is submitted for the investigation of its advantages in cephalometric roentgenography. A convenience sample of 480 Caucasians using original diagnostic cephalometric films was selected to evaluate the nasion-menton and sella-gonion distances and their relationship to the mandibular plane angle.

The anterior facial height was represented by the nasion-menton plane. The posterior facial height was represented by sella-gonion plane. The facial depth was represented by sella-nasion and menton-gonion planes. The mandibular plane angle was represented by the intersection of the sella-nasion and menton-gonion planes.

The development of the aortic isthmus, that region of the arch of the aorta between the left subclavian artery and the attachment of the ligamentum arteriosum, has received little attention. While the developmental history of the ductus arteriosus and foramen ovale has been well documented, as have the cardiac malformations associated with failure to complete this developmental sequence, little work has been done to define the normal sequence of isthmus development in its transition to an adult configuration in the postnatal period. This interesting case report comes from an alumnus of Henry Ford Hospital - Dr. Carlos Petrozzi who was a medical resident here from July 1961 to 1964. The findings may be of interest to opththalmologists and others because of the rather specific changes in the bulbar conjunctiva which can be easily seen without special ophthalmic instruments.

Classically, Howship's lacunae and osteoid seams or tissue have been used for microscopic identification of sites of bone osteoclastic and osteoblastic cell activity respectively. Recent transmitted light and blue light fluorescence microscopic study of fresh, undemineralized, specially stained and tetracycline labeled bone specimens have supported this use of these parameters of bone resorption and formation. Reports that the osteoclast is not required for bone resorption are evaluated here; it is concluded that no evidence exsists for resorption of bone tissue without osteoclasts. This does not apply to the perilacunar phenomena observed in certain well-defined situations.

In a continuing study of bone biodynamics, established values for the 6th rib are used to predict the parameters of the 11th rib. Autopsy samples of the 6th and 11th rib are compared and the correlation is used to validate studies of the 11th rib in osteoporosis showing normal cross sectional area with enlarged marrow cavity. The values presented are considered provisional until larger numbers of patients are studied.

The cerebellopontile angle and the vascular supply of the adjacent brain stem and cerebellum are susceptible to compression and damage by tumor and may be injured, directly or indirectly, during surgery. Awareness of the normal anatomical features of the region is valuable to the neuropathologist, the neurosurgeon and the neuro-otologist. Following is the first of a two-part presentation which describes the anatomy of the cerebellopontile angle, the vascular supply of the brain stem and its pathophysiology.

Hematopoietic Colony Forming Cells Of Spleen, Y. Maruyama, J. G. Eichten

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

It was found that isologous spleen cells injected into heavily irradiated recipients produced spleen nodules. The number of nodules or colony-farming-units (CFU) varied with cell dose, and were presumably clonal descendants of a single progenitor cell. The properties of the spleen and bone marrow CFU were compared and it was found that although present in greatly differing concentration, the radiation response and morphological features were similar.

It is necessary to understand the pathophysiology of osteoporosis in order to cure or prevent it. This involves establishing normal standards of bone formation and comparing these with measurements in osteoporotics. Here the authors present data collected through more sophisticated techniques than have been available previously, and offer some conclusions as to their implications.

Intrathecal Cytosine Arabinoside In Hodgkin's Disease With Central Nervous System Manifestations, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Robert W. Talley

This report of the beneficial response in central nervous system (CNS) manifestations of a patient with Hodgkin's disease to the intrathecal administration of cytosine arabinoside suggests that this drug may have value in the treatment of CNS involvement by lymphoma and acute leukemia and of some brain tumors. Its use, for the first time via the intrathecal route in the present case, was well tolerated in two series of treatments.

Recent experiments at the Henry Ford Hospital indicate that a relationship exists between pulsation in the sinus node artery and impulse formation by the sinus node. This paper describes the experiments and presents anatomic, physiologic and pharmacologic evidence along with observations that should interest the physicist and mathematician, as well.
