The Protective Role Of Superoxide Dismutase Against The Beta Cell Toxicity Of Diabetogenic Drugs, Samuel Evans Gandy Iii

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a scavenger of the toxic superoxide radical and thereby protects the integrity of cell components from oxidative damage. This enzyme is an essential part of the biological defense system of aerobic cells, both directly by removing the superoxide anion and indirectly by preventing the formation of hydroxyl radical when superoxide reacts with hydrogen peroxide. The chemical diabetogenic agent streptozotocin, alloxan and Vacor are reported to directly inhibit the activity of this enzyme. The role of SOD in protection of pancreatic beta cells from the toxicity of diabetogenic drugs and the interaction of the drug with enzyme …

Cell proliferation of a mammary adenocarcinoma cell line, CAMA-1. is affected by a number of steroid hormones and prolactin in long-term cultures. Estrogenic compounds stimulate cell growth while antiestrogenic compounds inhibit it. Prolactin can synergize the estrogenic effect. Progesterone, glucocorticoid or androgen reduce cell proliferation. Dihydrotestosterone is a very potent inhibitor,- effective at as low as 10 nM, and its effect is independent of estrogen action. Cortisol is a less effective inhibitor at concentrations below 10 nM; at these levels cortisol exhibits a slight inhibition which appears to be unrelated to estrogenic action. However, at higher concentrations, cortisol markedly reduces …

Four studies assessed the frequency of vaginal Staphylococcus aureus colonization in healthy women and associated risk factors. An association was found between S. aureus vaginal colonization and colonization at the labia minora and the anterior nares. Significant risk factors associated with an increased risk of vaginal S. aureus in at least one study were a history of genital herpes simplex infection, insertion of tampons without an applicator, and the use of Rely (Procter & Gamble) tampons. The use of systemic antibiotics within 2 weeks of the vaginal culture decreased the risk of recovery of S. aureus. The overall frequency …

The Effect Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Blood Lipids, Carol Lynn Bartholomew

The effect of cardiac rehabilitation on blood lipids was studied in a sample of seventeen male participants of the Greenville Hospital Center cardiac rehabilitation program. These subjects all suffered myocardial infarctions, but none had surgery to by-pass the obstructed coronary circulation. Paired values were obtained for triglyceride, serum cholesterol and HDL cholesterol before, and after the exercise program. The time span between the before-exercise and after-exercise values ranged from five to thirty-one weeks. The differences in the paired values were analyzed by the t-test. No significant decrease occurred in triglyceride or serum cholesterol. A significant increase occurred in HDL cholesterol.

Postmortem Stability Of Drugs In Blood And Tissues, Barry Steven Levine

The delay that occurs between specimen acquisition and analysis in clinical and forensic toxicology requires the establishment that no changes in drug concentration have occurred during this timed interval. In this research, severai groups of common drugs were examined for stability in serum, blood and tissues at room temperature and at 4°C. Specifically, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, lidocaine, procainamide and nortriptyline were studied. Decreases were found in the following drugs: chlordiazepoxide, norchlordiazepoxide, demoxepam, and nitrazepam. No changes were found in the other drugs. More detailed work was performed on chlordiazepoxide (CDP). Two breakdown products, demoxepam and nordiazepam (ND) were identified and quantitated. …

1. The influence of theophylline on the mucosa to serosa and serosa to mucosa fluxes of HCO3- were measured by the pH stat technique in isolated segments of proximal small intestine from Amphiuma maintained under short-circuited conditions. The mucosal or serosal fluid was exposed to media containing 25 mM-HCO3- (pH 7.4) while the pH of unbuffered media in the opposite compartment was maintained by addition of acid. 2. Theophylline significantly increased the secretory flux of HCO3- and significantly reduced the absorptive flux when measured in Cl- -free (SO4(2-)) media. 3.
