Locus Of Control, Coping, And Anticipatory Nausea In Women With Breast Cancer, Melinda L. Nielsen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Many cancer patients experience adverse chemotherapy-related side effects. The present study examined whether the perception that one can control and effectively cope with her treatment for breast cancer mitigate against any nausea and vomiting that she may experience in anticipation of chemotherapy treatments. Seventy-five women with breast cancer completed the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale - Form C, the Krantz Health Opinion Survey, the Ways of Coping Scale - Revised, and the Morrow Assessment of Nausea and Emesis. As hypothesized, internal health locus of control was significantly positively related to positive reappraisal coping strategies. This relationship was moderated by …

Introduction
- Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) remains a deadly disease with a 5-year survival of 8% for all stages combined (Siegel RL et al.). Currently, it’s the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and by 2020 it is projected to become the second leading cause (Rahib L, et al).
- The poor prognosis in PDA is in part due to the limited therapies that are currently available.
- This highlights the importance of high-throughput technologies for gene expression analyses and drug screens.
- A recently developed NanoString Technologies nCounter® analysis system, an example of high-throughput technology, utilizes a color-coded barcode …

Effect Of Receptor-Selective Retinoids On Growth And Differentiation Pathways In Mouse Melanoma Cells, Sejal H. Desai, Goran Boskovic, Linda L. Eastham, Marcia Dawson, Richard M. Niles
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Treatment of B16 mouse melanoma cells with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) results in inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of differentiation. Accompanying these events is an induction of retinoic acid receptor β (RARβ) expression, an increase in protein kinase Cα (PKCα) expression, and enhanced activator protein-1 (AP-1) transcriptional activity. These cells express nuclear RARα and RARγ and nuclear retinoid X receptors (RXR) α and β constitutively. We tested the ability of receptor-selective retinoids to induce the biochemical changes found in ATRA-treated melanoma cells and also tested their effectiveness in decreasing anchorage-dependent and -independent growth. The RXR-selective ligand (2E,4E)-6-(5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-3,5,5,8,8-pentamethyl-2-naphthalenyl)-3,7-dimethyl-2,4,6-octatrienoic acid (SR11246) was …

Class A scavenger receptors (SR-A) mediate the uptake of modified low density lipoprotein (LDL) by macrophages. Although not typically associated with the activation of intracellular signaling cascades, results with peritoneal macrophages indicate that the SR-A ligand acetylated LDL (AcLDL) promotes activation of cytosolic kinases and phospholipases. These signaling responses were blocked by the treatment of cells with pertussis toxin (PTX) indicating that SR-A activates Gi/o-linked signaling pathways. The functional significance of SR-A-mediated Gi/o activation is not clear. In this study, we investigated the potential role of Gi/o activation in regulating SR-A-mediated lipoprotein uptake. Treatment of mouse …

Gene therapy by direct delivery of plasmid DNA has several advantages over viral gene transfer, but plasmid delivery is less efficient. In vivo electroporation has been used to enhance delivery of chemotherapeutic agents to tumors in both animal and human studies. Recently, this delivery technique has been extended to large molecules such as plasmid DNA. Here, the successful delivery of plasmids encoding reporter genes to rat hepatocellular carcinomas by in vivo electroporation is demonstrated.

In traditional radiology practice, reports are typically dictated and then transcribed.? While the free-text reports represent the semantic knowledge interpreted and conveyed by a physician, the information can be hard to access. The advantages of representing medical data in a structured format using standard terminology are clearly recognized. These include the ability to implement a standardized electronic medical record, automatically invoke medical guidelines when appropriate, and conduct outcomes research. Standard structured reports facilitate intelligent indexing, searching, and retrieval of documents from clinical databases. Recent attempts have been made in the industry to enable structured data entry using preformatted templates, but …

Differential Expression Of Chemokines In A Mouse Model Of Wound Healing, Susan H. Jackman, Matthew B. Yoak, Shivaleela Keerthy, Bonnie L. Beaver
Differential Expression Of Chemokines In A Mouse Model Of Wound Healing, Susan H. Jackman, Matthew B. Yoak, Shivaleela Keerthy, Bonnie L. Beaver
Biochemistry and Microbiology
Macrophages have a multifaceted role in wound healing. While their initial activity may be in the degradation and elimination of damaged tissue, macrophages also produce and secrete a variety of mediators that can participate in the repair process as well. To perform these functions, macrophages must be recruited to a wound site. Our purpose was to examine the temporal and spatial expression of macrophage chemoattracting cytokines (chemokines) at a surgical wound site. A surgical wound was prepared on the dorsal aspect of B6AFI/J mice. Biopsies were obtained from the wound and a comparable nonwounded area between 6 and 72 hr …

Dietary Fish Oil Sensitizes A549 Lung Xenografts To Doxorubicin Chemotherapy, W. Elaine Hardman, Mary Pat Moyer, Ivan L. Cameron
Biochemistry and Microbiology
A549 xenografts were allowed to grow in nude mice to about 5 mm in diameter, then diets were changed to modified AIN-76 diets containing 19% wt/wt. fish oil (FO) or 20% wt./wt. com oil (CO). Ten days later dietary ferric citrate (0.3% wt./dry wt.) was added and doxoribicin (DOX) treatment (3.6 mg/kg i.v. each of the 5 days for 18 days) commenced. Treatment with DOX halted the growth of tumors in the CO fed mice. However, in those mice, which consumed FO or FO with ferric citrate, treatment with DOX caused significant tumor regression.

Characterization Of Human T-Cell Leukemia Virus 1 Reverse Transcriptase, Pinky Gundayao Agbuya
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Human T-cell leukemia virus 1 (HTLV-1) is a type C human retrovirus which has been the causative agent of Adult T-cell leukemia. Replication of the retrovirus; requires a reverse transcriptase which converts the retroviral RNA into DNA which is later incorporated into the host's genome. Very little is known about the reverse transcriptase of HTLV-1. Researchers have attempted to purify HTLV-1 RT by isolating the enzyme from human cell lines. Because large amounts of protein could not be produced by this isolation method, the reverse transcriptase cannot be fully characterized. In this research, a recombinant protein expressed in E. coli …
