Introduction Hip dislocations are devastating injuries that require urgent intervention to minimize the development of severe complications. This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology of hip dislocations in the United States (U.S.) from 1990 to 2019. Methods This study is a descriptive retrospective epidemiological study. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database was used to collect epidemiological data on hip dislocation in the U.S. from 1990 to 2019. Data included years lived with disability (YLDs), prevalence, and incidence rates per 100,000 people. PURPOSE: To estimate metastasis of patients with uveal melanoma (UM) based on tumor size categories classified by ultrasonographic thickness as small (0.0-3.0 mm), medium (3.1-8.0 mm), or large (≥8.1 mm) using both non-conditional and conditional analyses.

DESIGN: Retrospective analysis.

METHODS: A retrospective study of 8034 cases over 35-years at a single ocular oncology referral center evaluated the primary endpoint of cumulative incidence of metastasis at 5-, 10-, 15-, 20-, 25- and 30-years using non-conditional and conditional analysis at 3-years, 5-years, and 10-years of metastasis-free survival.

However, the existing fillers for soft tissue augmentation have shown certain limitations in repairing mid-facial depression. Therefore, we herein report the development of a novel recombinant humanized type III collagen gel (C3Gel) through rational design and modification of a commercially available recombinant type III humanized collagen lyophilized fiber product. Pharyngitis is commonly caused by the gram positive bacteria, streptococcus. Given the potential morbid complications of untreated streptococcal pharyngitis, antibiotics are critical. One of the rarer complications is pulmonary-renal syndrome (PRS), defined as rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and diffuse alveolar hemorrhage. PRS is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, making swift diagnosis and treatment imperative for survival. More common causes of PRS are tied to autoimmune diseases. Background: Newer analgesic techniques to reduce opioid use and pain after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) include preoperative cryoneurolysis, adductor canal block (ACB), and local anesthetic infiltration between the popliteal artery and capsule of the knee (iPACK) block. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether changing the regional analgesic from ropivacaine to liposomal bupivacaine would provide superior pain relief and reduce opioid requirements at 2 and 12 weeks following TKA. Background: Epiploic appendagitis is a condition usually caused by infarction of the epiploic appendages, small outpouchings of adipose tissue found on the serosal surface of the colon. Epiploic appendagitis is a rare cause of acute lower abdominal pain, but the condition does not have any specific presenting clinical features and is often misdiagnosed as acute diverticulitis, appendicitis, or other gastrointestinal disorder. Case Report: A 53-year-old female presented with abnormal uterine bleeding and pelvic pain and was seeking definitive surgical management. Cancer screening can detect cancer at an early stage and decrease cancer morbidity and mortality. Refugee populations may have had limited access to cancer screening before arrival in the United States. A cross-sectional analysis of cervical, breast, and colorectal cancer screening was conducted among refugees with primary care visits between 2018 and 2022 at a refugee health clinic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Cancer screening outcomes included the number and type of screenings; the number of normal, inconclusive, and abnormal screening results; completion of follow-up tests for inconclusive and abnormal results; and the number of cancer diagnoses. Introduction Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) is a rare genetic disorder caused by the mutation of the paired-like homeobox 2B (PHOX2B) gene that leads to alveolar hypoventilation during sleep and at times while awake. The majority of patients with CCHS have polyalanine repeat mutations (PARM) whereas 10% have non-PARM (NPARM). Of those with NPARM, less than 1% are caused by whole gene deletion. NPARM is associated with more severe phenotypes; however, some may have variable penetrance causing variable presentation within families. Developmental lead (Pb) exposure results in a variety of cognitive deficits and behavioral issues including increased antisocial behavior and aggression. This study investigated the effect of developmental Pb exposure on aggression and violent behavior in male rats and the potential modulatory influences of quality of maternal care and enriched/non-enriched housing conditions. Long-Evans male rats with or without Pb exposure (perinatal or early postnatal) from low or high maternal care mothers (based on amounts of licking/grooming and arched- back nursing) were randomly assigned to live in enriched or non-enriched environments at weaning. Notable advances have been made in improving survival outcomes in various cancers, but some have incurred undesirable costs and effects to patients with respect to fertility and menopause. Patients are living longer with cancer, and patient reported outcomes are influencing decision-making by individuals and their health care providers. It is essential to evaluate existing standards of care on an ongoing basis and prioritize quality of life and long-term survivorship, particularly for interventions in early-stage cancers and risk-reducing strategies that often yield long-term life expectancy.

This mini review examines the psychological burdens of Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) and encourages collaborations between medical and mental health providers who treat this condition. The psychological comorbidities of MRKH emerge in adolescence and persist into adulthood. For several years, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and researchers in this field have called for the provision of psychological counseling for individuals with MRKH. However, referrals to qualified mental health professionals remain sparse leaving many to confront the emotional complexities of MRKH with little to no support.

Introduction: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes significant morbidity and mortality in young children. For 25 years, palivizumab has been the only effective pharmaceutical RSV preventive.

Areas covered: We summarize the development and a quarter-century of real-world evidence with palivizumab. We highlight its positive impact on the burden of RSV in high-risk children. Based on lessons learnt from its implementation, we suggest strategies for effective and equitable deployment of newer RSV preventives.

Objective

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune condition with diverse manifestations. Childhood-onset SLE (cSLE) presents more severely than adult-onset disease with a higher incidence of severe neurologic or renal manifestations and lower estimated survival rates. There is limited literature on the range of severe gastrointestinal manifestations at presentation in cSLE, and this lack of information results in underappreciation of these potentially life-threatening complications and little guidance regarding management of these patients.

Aims: The Self-Care Inventory is a widely used measure to assess diabetes self-management behaviors. We sought to adapt and streamline the measure to reflect advances in diabetes management, including increased use of continuous glucose monitor and automated insulin delivery systems.

Methods: Through an expert-driven, iterative process, the updated Self-Care Inventory (SCI-U) was created by modifying items to reflect modern diabetes management and reducing the measure to 8 items. Objectives: To investigate the influence of race and insurance type on speech delay rates and hearing rehabilitation access in children with bilateral hearing loss (HL).

Study design: Retrospective cross-sectional study of pediatric patients with bilateral HL who received cochlear implants (CIs) or hearing aids (HAs).

Setting: This study used the national Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database to identify patients with HL across 52 tertiary care pediatric hospitals in the United States.

Methods: Data collected included demographics, CI/HA use, speech delay/disorders, and type of insurance coverage.

Background: Diagnosis of Kingella kingae skeletal system infections is made challenging by the microbe's fastidious nature. Detection and quantification of circulating microbial cell-free DNA (mcfDNA) in plasma by the Karius Test, a commercial metagenomic sequencing test, may offer promise in diagnosing pediatric spinal infections caused by difficult-to-culture organisms such as K. kingae .

Methods: Plasma mcfDNA sequencing detections of K. kingae from April 2018 to December 2020 were reviewed to identify pediatric (age < 18 years) patients. Medical charts of those with spinal infections were reviewed, and mcfDNA sequencing diagnostic performance was compared with usual care tests (ie, cultures, polymerase chain reaction).

Results: Ten children with K. kingae spinal infections were identified across 7 institutions. The median age was 16.5 months (range 11-23 months). All case-patients had vertebral osteomyelitis …

An extensive library of symptom inventories has been developed over time to measure clinical symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI), but this variety has led to several long-standing issues. Most notably, results drawn from different settings and studies are not comparable. This creates a fundamental problem in TBI diagnostics and outcome prediction, namely that it is not possible to equate results drawn from distinct tools and symptom inventories. Background: The benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) for ampullary adenocarcinoma is unclear. The Hidden Genome model classifies prognostic subtypes with greater accuracy than standard histologic classification (intestinal [INT] vs pancreatobiliary [PB]), but its predictive capacity to guide the use of AC remains unstudied.

Methods: We applied the Hidden Genome model to an international cohort of 183 patients with resected ampullary adenocarcinoma who underwent genomic sequencing. The model quantified the predicted cell of origin (colorectal vs pancreas/distal bile duct) in all specimens. Overall survival (OS) was compared using Kaplan-Meier estimates, stratified by AC use versus surgery alone (SA).

Background: NAA10-related and NAA15-related neurodevelopmental (ND) syndromes present with intellectual disability, hypotonia, cardiac abnormalities, and delayed development. While data exists on the clinical manifestations of these conditions, there are few reports describing the neuroanatomical abnormalities present on imaging.

Objective: We aim to provide neuroimaging analyses for a subset of probands with NAA10- and NAA15-related neurodevelopmental symptoms and assess the severity and number of neuroanatomical anomalies and their associated functional impairments to better understand the pathophysiology of these disease processes.

Childhood trauma exposure is associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and suicidality, however it is also a risk factor for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in adults. Research examining the relationship between childhood trauma and OCD in youth is mixed, and there is a dearth of research examining the associations among OCD, PTSS, and suicidality. As a result, conclusions have been drawn from primarily cross-sectional adult samples. We have investigated the ability of a MasSpec Pen (MSPen) "three-in-one" (extraction, transfer, and ionization) device coupled to a mass spectrometer to provide instantaneous chemical profiles that could promptly characterize wood samples from the mahogany (Meliaceae) family. For that, we selected a set of five representative wood species, that is, Brazilian mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla, also known as Honduran mahogany), two African mahoganies (Khaya ivorensis and Khaya senegalensis), and two "nongenuine" ("fake") mahogany woods: cedar (Cedrela odorata) and andiroba (Carapa guianensis). CD25KO mice are a model of Sjögren disease. CD25KO mice have severe inflammation and infiltrating lymphocytes to the lacrimal glands (LG). Whether the pathogenicity of CD25KO CD4+ T cells can be controlled in vivo by Tregs is unknown. Eight-week-old B6 and CD25KO mice LGs were submitted for RNA bulk sequencing. A total of 3481 genes were differentially expressed in CD25KO LG compared to B6. Tear washing analysis identified CD25KO mice had elevated protein levels of TNF, IFN-γ, and CCL5 and decreased protein levels of IL-12p40 and VEGF-A.
