A Program To Promote Physical Activity And Healthy Body Weight In An Adolescent Female: A Case Study, Katie Stoddard

Kinesiology and Public Health

A case study of an obese 14-year-old female was conducted to assess her body weight and dietary and physical activity habits. The purpose of this study was to promote weight loss through improved dietary practices and an increase in energy expenditure. This was done by monitoring and altering caloric intake and engaging in regular, vigorous physical activity. Furthermore, the subject increased health-related knowledge, developed new skills, and ultimately attempted behavior modification. From April to September 2009, the subject participated in a minimum of two supervised exercise sessions per week to increase her energy expenditure and to teach her strategies for …

Research Note: Exploration Of Factors That Impede Door-To-Balloon Times, Erin Troby Jan 2010

Research Note: Exploration Of Factors That Impede Door-To-Balloon Times, Erin Troby

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

When experiencing an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), more commonly known as a heart attack, patients need rapid treatment in order to open up and reestablish blood flow within the coronary artery. By far, the most common way to do this is an invasive procedure that allows a physician to inflate a tiny balloon into the plaque-filled area of the artery. The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) have established a 90-minute goal for this procedure, which means that, from the time a patient enters the door of the emergency department (ED), the medical team has …

Sputum Neutrophils As A Biomarker In Copd: Findings From The Eclipse Study, Dave Singh, Lisa Edwards, Ruth Tal-Singer, Stephen I. Rennard

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

INTRODUCTION: The percentage of neutrophils in sputum are increased in COPD patients, and may therefore be a biomarker of airway inflammation. We studied the relationships between sputum neutrophils and FEV1, health status, exacerbation rates, systemic inflammation and emphysema, and long term variability at 1 year.

METHODS: Sputum samples were obtained from 488 COPD patients within the ECLIPSE cohort. 359 samples were obtained at baseline, and 297 after 1 year. 168 subjects provided samples at both visits. Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, surfactant protein D and C-reactive protein levels were measured by immunoassays. Low-dose CT scans evaluated emphysema.

RESULTS: Sputum neutrophil % …

Folic Acid And Neural Tube Defects, Rachel Leah Feinstein Jan 2010

Folic Acid And Neural Tube Defects, Rachel Leah Feinstein

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is an excerpt of this article: Neural tube defects (NTD) are the most common types of birth defects. Research shows that folic acid taken periconceptionally greatly reduces the risk of having a NTD affected child. This paper will explain the role that folate plays in the metabolism, specifically in synthesizing methionine. It will bring evidence to show that methionine is crucial for normal neural tube development. In addition, it will explore the genetic factor involved in folate metabolism and possible folate deficiency.

The Peanut Allergy Epidemic, Rivky Sachs Jan 2010

The Peanut Allergy Epidemic, Rivky Sachs

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Peanut allergy is one of the most predominant food allergies. It accounts for majority of the highly severe and fatal allergic reactions to food. Peanut allergy is generally detected early in life and is commonly associated with other atopic disorders such as asthma, eczema, and rhinitis. The prevalence and pervasiveness of peanut allergies is increasing worldwide, and most peanut allergic patients have lifelong sensitivities to peanuts (de Leon et al, 2008). Patients with severe allergies must stringently avoid any contact with peanuts and depend on intramuscular epinephrine (EpiPen) to counteract the reaction caused by intake of peanuts. Much research is …

Pulmonary Embolism Presenting With Sudden Respiratory Failure In Two Previously Stable Neonates, Joseph Werthammer, Audra Pritt, Laura Reechi, Linda Brown, Mahmood Heydarian

Pediatrics

Pulmonary artery embolism (PE) is a rare and life-threatening complication in the neonate. We describe two previously stable infants who incurred respiratory failure from PE. The first case is a late preterm infant with gastroschisis with autopsy confirmation of PE presumably as a result of a central venous line (CVL) with thromboembolism. The second case is an extreme low birth weight infant with sudden onset of respiratory failure, abnormal chest x-ray, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and echocardiographic confirmation of a thrombus at the junction of the superior vena cava and right atrium (SVC/RA) at the site of a previous CVL. …

Biochemistry and Microbiology

The global increase in the incidence of obesity has emerged as one of the most serious public health risks in recent years. Despite the enormity of the obesity pandemic, there are currently only two FDA-approved therapies for its treatment and these drugs exhibit modest effi cacy and have limiting side effects. Prieurianin is a plant limonoid product that deters feeding in insect larvae. We investigated in this study the effects of prieurianin on weight loss and adipogenesis. Our results showed that prieurianin causes weight loss by reducing energy intake in obese mice on highcalorie diet. We also found that prieurianin …

Laterality, Perception, And Action During The Size-Weight Illusion, Gavin Buckingham, Nathalie S. Ranger, Melvyn A. Goodale Jan 2010

Laterality, Perception, And Action During The Size-Weight Illusion, Gavin Buckingham, Nathalie S. Ranger, Melvyn A. Goodale

Psychology Presentations

In the classic size-weight illusion (SWI), a small object will feel heavier than an larger object of equal weight (Charpentier, 1891). Individuals continue to perceive this illusory difference in weight long after their gripping and lifting forces have scaled to the actual, identical, mass of the illusion-inducing stimuli (Flanagan & Beltzner, 2000).

The independence of our weight perception and fingertip force application has only been quantified in the right hand of right-handers. The immunity to this perceptual illusion may be affected by manual asymmetries (e.g., Gonzalez, Ganel & Goodale, 2006).

We examined perception of heaviness and fingertip force scaling in …

Chronic Renal Disease Is More Prevalent In Patients With Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome Who Had A Positive History Of Diarrhea, Ajay P. Sharma, Guido Filler, Prabo Dwight, William F. Clark Jan 2010

Chronic Renal Disease Is More Prevalent In Patients With Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome Who Had A Positive History Of Diarrhea, Ajay P. Sharma, Guido Filler, Prabo Dwight, William F. Clark

Paediatrics Publications

Many uncontrolled studies and a subsequent meta-analysis suggest that hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) with a positive history for diarrhea is associated with a significant increase in chronic renal disease. Two recent controlled studies that followed children with this type of HUS after Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreaks, and where the controls were selected from a group exposed in the outbreak, gave conflicting results. To clarify this apparent difference, we retrospectively compared a cohort of 30 children with sporadic diarrhea-positive HUS with 30 healthy controls who had no history of bloody diarrhea or HUS and who had similar age and gender. Significantly …

Ppar_2 Expression In Growth Plate Chondrocytes Is Regulated By P38 And Gsk-3, Lee-Anne Stanton, Jennifer Ruizhe Li, Frank Beier Jan 2010

Ppar_2 Expression In Growth Plate Chondrocytes Is Regulated By P38 And Gsk-3, Lee-Anne Stanton, Jennifer Ruizhe Li, Frank Beier

Paediatrics Publications

Although peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR)_ remains a critical regulator of preadipocyte differentiation, new roles have been discovered in inflammation, bone morphogenesis, endothelial function, cancer, longevity and atherosclerosis. Despite the demonstration of PPAR expression in chondrocytes, its role and the pathways affecting its expression and activity in chondrocytes remain largely unknown. We investigated the effects of PPAR activation on chondrocyte differentiation and its participation in chondrocyte lipid metabolism. PPAR2 expression is highly regulated during chondrocyte differentiation in vivo and in vitro PPAR activation with troglitazone resulted in increased Indian hedgehog expression and reduced collagen X expression, confirming previously described roles …

Adaptive Radiation Therapy Of Prostate Cancer, Ning Wen Jan 2010

Adaptive Radiation Therapy Of Prostate Cancer, Ning Wen

Wayne State University Dissertations

ART is a close-loop feedback algorithm which evaluates the organ deformation and motion right before the treatment and takes into account dose delivery variation daily to compensate for the difference between planned and delivered dose. It also has potential to allow further dose escalation and margin reduction to improve the clinical outcome. This retrospective study evaluated ART for prostate cancer treatment and radiobiological consequences. An IRB approved protocol has been used to evaluate actual dose delivery of patients with prostate cancer undergoing treatment with daily CBCT.

The dose from CBCT was measured in phantom using TLD and ion chamber techniques …

Identification Of Neuroblastoma And Its Prognostic Markers Using Raman Spectroscopy, Rachel Kast Jan 2010

Identification Of Neuroblastoma And Its Prognostic Markers Using Raman Spectroscopy, Rachel Kast

Wayne State University Dissertations

Introduction: Neuroblastoma is the most common cancer of infancy. It is one of several peripheral nervous system tumors, including ganglioneuroma, peripheral nerve sheath tumor, and pheochromocytoma. It is commonly situated on the adrenal gland. It displays similar histology to other small round blue cell tumors, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, and Ewing sarcoma. One method of judging neuroblastoma aggressiveness uses tumor histology factors, including mitosis-karyorrhexis index, Schwannian stromal development, degree of differentiation, and patient age. Tumor aggressiveness can also be judged based on the amplification of certain genes, including MYCN. Raman spectroscopy is a physics-based method which identifies the biochemical …

Egfr/Met Association Regulates Egfr Tki Resistance In Breast Cancer, Kelly L. Mueller, Zeng-Quan Yang, Ramsi Haddad, Stephen P. Ethier, Julie L. Boerner

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Breast cancers show a lack of response to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), despite 30% of tumors expressing EGFR. The mechanism of this resistance is unknown; however, we have recently shown that Met kinase activity compensates for loss of EGFR kinase activity in cell culture models. Met has been implicated in the pathogenesis of breast tumors and therefore may cooperate with EGFR for tumor growth. Here we have found that EGFR phosphorylation and cell proliferation is in part regulated by Met expression. In addition, we found that Met constitutive phosphorylation occurred independent of the Met …

Prevalence Of Hepatitis B And C Viral Infections In Pakistan: Findings Of A National Survey Appealing For Effective Prevention And Control Measures, H Qureshi, K M. Bile, Rashid Jooma, S E. Alam, H U R. Afridi

Section of Neurosurgery

A prevalence survey on hepatitis B and C infections was carried out to obtain national estimates and assess epidemiological dynamics and underlying risk factors. Overall prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) of 2.5% and 4.8%, respectively, reflected a combined infection rate of 7.6% in the general population, consistent with an ongoing high burden of chronic liver disease (CLD). There was significant association of these viral infections with a range of risk factors led by reuse of syringes. These findings validate currently implemented strategies by the national programme for the control of hepatitis viral infections, …

Superficial Dsg2 Expression Limits Epidermal Blister Formation Mediated By Pemphigus Foliaceus Antibodies And Exfoliative Toxins., D Brennan, Ying Hu, Walid Medhat, A Dowling, M G Mahoney

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Cell-cell adhesion mediated by desmosomes is crucial for maintaining proper epidermal structure and function, as evidenced by several severe and potentially fatal skin disorders involving impairment of desmosomal proteins. Pemphigus foliaceus (PF) and staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) are subcorneal blistering diseases resulting from loss of function of the desmosomal cadherin, desmoglein 1 (Dsg1). To further study the pathomechanism of these diseases and to assess the adhesive properties of Dsg2, we employed a recently established transgenic (Tg) mouse model expressing Dsg2 in the superficial epidermis. Neonatal Tg and wild type (WT) mice were injected with purified ETA or PF Ig. …
