TikTok is the newest and most popular form of social media for young audiences around the world. Healthcare professionals can present medical information to all audiences in an engaging and short-length video manner. Our study evaluates the reliability of Monkeypox-related information presented on TikTok. We assessed the quality of the information presented using DISCERN, a peer-reviewed tool used for the evaluation of health information presented to consumers. Findings from our study suggest physicians, members of the healthcare field, and non-medical individuals post videos supplying viewers with information that is rated unreliable. Physicians and other healthcare professionals should prioritize providing reliable …

Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction: Cervical cancer is a preventable disease affecting millions of women worldwide, with higher prevalence and mortality in developing countries. One explanation of this disparity is due to reduced access to screenings, especially in rural communities where mobile health clinics are limited by what medical equipment they can bring. To address these barriers, an engineering team called Project MESA (Making Examinations Safe and Accessible) designed a gynecological examination table that is portable, lightweight, and easily sanitizable.
Objective: This study aims to (1) evaluate whether the implementation of this device improves the clinician’s ability to perform pap smears as opposed to …

Melanoma is a skin cancer that arises in melanocytes; it is the fifth most common cancer in the United States with approximately 100,000 new cases per year. Current treatments for malignant melanoma are surgical excision, radiation therapy and systemic therapy; however, the five-year survival rate for patients with stage IV is 29.8%. There is an urgent unmet clinical need to investigate novel treatments for these patients. Panobinostat is an orally available histone deacetylase inhibitor used in several hematologic malignancies, but it was ineffective as a single agent against melanoma in Phase 1. To address the insufficiency of options for melanoma …

Longitudinal associations between dietary fructose and sodium and systolic and diastolic blood pressure among US Black and White adults in the CARDIA study
Authors: Rana Elhamzawy, Daniel Domin, Dragana Komnenov
Hypertension is one of the leading risk factors for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Likewise, suboptimal dietary habits, including high fructose and sodium intake, are major contributors to mortality. High dietary fructose alone predisposes to salt-sensitivity of blood pressure, which is an independent, significant cardiovascular risk factor. We previously showed in our rat model of fructose-salt-sensitive hypertension that even a short term (4 weeks) feeding with 20% fructose and 4% …

Gender Disparities In The Diagnosis Of Sleep Disordered Breathing, Kenna Haile, Nesrine Ibrahim, Safwan Badr, Apala Vaishnav
Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction: Current diagnostic guidelines for sleep disordered breathing (SDB) require that apneas and hypopneas be accompanied by a 4% desaturation for it to constitute a respiratory event (AHI-Accepted). However, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends expanding the diagnostic criteria to include apneas and hypopneas accompanied by a 3% desaturation or a cortical arousal for diagnosis (AHI-Recommended). We hypothesized that a clinical sample of both men and women would demonstrate that women are more likely to be misdiagnosed using the accepted criteria compared to the recommended criteria.
Methods: The clinical sample consisted of all patients receiving a PSG at the …

Medical Student Research Symposium
INTRODUCTION: Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) scores have been utilized in setting realistic post-intervention expectations. Having a model to stratify likelihood of improvement based on pre-operative variables may allow for better decision making and patient counseling. We hypothesized that preoperative PROMIS scores correlate with patients’ subjective level of improvement after trapeziectomy and ligament reconstruction with tendon interposition (LRTI)
METHODS: Retrospective chart review was performed to identify patients who underwent trapeziectomy and LRTI. Demographic data along with preoperative PROMIS Upper Extremity (UE), Pain Interference (PI), Depression (DP), and QuickDASH (QD) scores were collected. At their follow-up appointment, patients were asked …

Initial studies during the COVID-19 pandemic reported angiotensin converting enzyme 2 inhibitors (ACE2i) could be associated with worse disease course due to potential increase in ACE2 receptors which SARS-CoV2 virus uses for cellular entry. Subsequent studies refuted such concerns, reporting that continued use of ACEis and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) in hypertensive individuals is protective. However, there remains a paucity of data evaluating effects of various antihypertensive medications, steroids, and beta blockers in chronic kidney disease (CKD) populations and in individuals with normal kidney function. This study was designed to evaluate the potential risks associated with antihypertensive medications and COVID-19 …

Assessing Accessibility And Equity Of Autism Spectrum Disorder Screening Tools, Kiernan S. Bloye, Joseph Aderemi Md, Roman Grossi, Tessa Hampton, Melissa Maye Phd
Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction: Disparities to accessing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) screening tools have been demonstrated across race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and language. Additionally, there are concerns that existing screening tools are not as accurate for minoritized individuals. Thus, it is likely that level 1 screening tools must be adapted and developed for, and with, marginalized populations in the United States to promote increased levels of universal screening access and accuracy among minoritized populations.
Methods: Using the PRISMA scoping review checklist, an initial search produced 1880 unique records. Following title and abstract review, 35 articles met criteria for full manuscript review. Finally, 7 …

Introduction:
Skin cancer is less prevalent in persons with darker skin color compared to those with light skin, but contrarily is associated with greater mortality rates. Experts agree this is primarily due to late detection. Challenges in early detection include low public awareness, uncommon presentation, lower index of suspicion among health care providers, and decreased access to specialty care. To address some of these barriers, we designed a survey-based study to discover current beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes of urban youth towards sun protection before and after an educational intervention.
Methods:
In 2022, 17 children living in metro Detroit …

Lymphvascular invasion (LVI) is recognized as an adverse prognostic factor in many cancers. Our aim is to assess the prognostic ability of LVI in UTUC urothelial carcinoma (UC) and micropapillary urothelial carcinoma (MPUC) subtypes as a predictor of overall survival (OS) using a large North American cohort.
Our cohort included 9750 cM0 UTUC patients who underwent a radical nephroureterectomy (RNU), between 2004 and 2015, within the National Cancer Database (NCDB). The main variable of interest was LVI status, and its interaction with pathological nodal (pN) status. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to estimate the OS. Cox regression analysis tested the impact …

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) impedes recovery from lower extremity arthroplasties (LEA) and increases risk of complications/mortality, yet there aren’t standards for screening PAD patients pre-LEA. This review proposes some.
METHODS: This review searched databases for articles containing relevant terms. Non-English articles, those unrelated to LEA, and duplicates were excluded. Articles were cross-referenced to find other relevant papers for a total of 111.
RESULTS: Up to 49.2% of PAD patients have CAD. Wagner grade III/IV ulcers increase amputations and decrease wound closures. The Wound, Ischemia, and Foot Infection (WIfI) system provides more accurate, and therefore actionable, assessment. Overlooking PAD in …

Background
The therapeutic effect of spine surgery has been traditionally evaluated by physical examination, radiographic findings, and general perception of patient’s health status. However, these assessments are often insufficient to represent surgical outcomes.Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are tools developed to measures quality outcomes following spinal surgery. Examples include the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Function 4-item Short Form (PROMIS-PF), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), ODI (Oswestry Disability Index), SF-36 (Short Form Health Survey), and EQ-5D (EuroQuol-5D). The minimum clinically important difference (MCID) is an assessment tool to note the smallest clinical difference in PROs and provides the threshold where patients experience clinical …

Staged Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy for the Surgical Treatment of Insular Glioma: a Case Series
Introduction
Insular gliomas pose one of the most significant challenges in neurosurgical oncology due to the complexity of the surrounding functional and microvascular anatomy. Despite current surgical and technological advancements, resection of insular gliomas can lead to potentially severe neurological morbidities. Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy (LITT), either alone or combined with surgery, presents a less invasive cytoreductive approach for treating insular gliomas.
Objective
In this work we describe the first-ever reported series of patients with insular gliomas treated with staged LITT operations with or without …
