Patients with advanced cirrhosis are at risk for numerous complications, including hepatic hydrothorax. Hepatic hydrothorax most commonly occurs in the right pleural space but less commonly can present on the left hemithorax. The exact pathophysiology is not fully understood, but there are several schools of thought for right-sided effusions. In this case report, we discuss the findings of a 76-year-old female who experienced a left-sided hydrothorax likely stemming from her underlying liver disease which created tension pathology in an otherwise stable patient. Interestingly, this accumulation occurred over a couple of weeks despite optimal medical management. A thoracentesis confirmed ascitic fluid. …

The dynamic cellular microenvironment, made up of resident cells and various macromolecules, differs markedly across tissues in the body. The multidirectional signals that cells receive from this microenvironment, along with the signaling they send back, heavily influence their physiology and behavior. Recent important findings have further validated this notion as the mammary microenvironment has been shown to suppress tumor progression by redirecting cancer cells to adopt a normal mammary epithelial progenitor fate in vivo. Breast cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed malignancies in women worldwide, necessitating precise diagnosis and treatment. Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is the primary treatment for nonpalpable cases, yet current approaches often lack accuracy due to the absence of real-time 3D imaging during surgery. This limitation impairs surgeons’ ability to visualize tumor locations, compromising outcomes and potentially leading to repeat surgeries with higher risks, undesirable cosmetic results, increased costs, and, in some cases, mastectomy. Thus, there is a critical need for a navigation system to facilitate accurate tumor excision in nonpalpable breast cancer through real-time patient-specific 3D tracking.

Diagnostic overshadowing occurs when a patient with a pre-existing diagnosis presents with symptoms that are attributed to the diagnosis, but actually reflect a separate issue. This diagnostic overshadowing can lead to delays in diagnosis, as well as disparities in health care and outcomes. The following case will provide an example in which diagnostic overshadowing contributed to the delay of an autism diagnosis in a child who is deaf. The most common cause of an iliopsoas abscess is infection with Staphylococcus aureus. Mycobacterium tuberculosis rarely causes psoas abscesses, with an incidence of about 10–30% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and only 3% of tuberculosis in general. BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is a serious, usually fatal disease and one of the most aggressive malignancies. Research into whether hormone replacement therapy (HRT) might protect against pancreatic cancer has yielded mixed results. This study aimed to investigate the potential association between HRT and the risk of pancreatic cancer in postmenopausal women.

METHODS: This population-based, retrospective study extracted data from the US National Inpatient Sample (NIS) 2008-2018. Hospitalized females aged ≥55 years were eligible for inclusion. Associations between HRT, other study variables, and pancreatic cancer diagnosis were determined using univariate and multivariable regression analyses.

To report long-term (5-year) safety, effectiveness, and radiographic outcomes after sacroiliac (SI) joint fusion (SIJF) with 3D-printed triangular titanium implants (TTI) and compare them with solid titanium plasma spray coated implants Summary of Background Data. A large literature base supports minimally invasive SIJF with TTI for chronic SIJ dysfunction. Methods. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of birthing individuals delivering from January 1, 2017, to March 1, 2020, in Louisiana. BACKGROUND: Black/African American adults are underrepresented in oncology clinical trials in the United States, despite efforts at narrowing this disparity.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore differences in how Black/African American oncology patients perceive clinical trials to improve support for the clinical trial participation decision-making process.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium known to be associated with a significant risk of gastric cancer in addition to chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and MALT lymphoma. Although only a small percentage of patients infected with H. pylori develop gastric cancer, Gastric cancer causes more than 750,000 deaths worldwide, with 90% of cases being caused by H. pylori. The International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (IMPC) systematically produces and phenotypes mouse lines with presumptive null mutations to provide insight into gene function. The IMPC now uses the programmable RNA-guided nuclease Cas9 for its increased capacity and flexibility to efficiently generate null alleles in the C57BL/6N strain. In addition to being a valuable novel and accessible research resource, the production of 3313 knockout mouse lines using comparable protocols provides a rich dataset to analyze experimental and biological variables affecting in vivo gene engineering with Cas9. Objectives: Vasculopathy emerges early in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and links to endothelial cell (EC) injury and angiogenesis. Understanding EC transcriptomes and epigenomes is crucial for unravelling the mechanisms involved.

Methods: Transcriptomes and chromatin accessibility were assessed by single-cell RNA sequencing and single-nucleus transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing. Immunofluorescent staining of skin and proteomics assay were employed to confirm the altered SSc EC phenotypes. Gain-of-function assay was used to evaluate the effects of ETS transcription factors on human dermal ECs (hDECs).
