OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of stem cell therapy in human studies for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).

METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was performed across multiple databases, including Ovid MEDLINE ALL, Embase via Ovid SP, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, and Cochrane CENTRAL, up to January 31, 2024. Keywords and controlled vocabularies related to diabetic neuropathy and stem cell therapy were used. Inclusion criteria encompassed all controlled trials examining stem cell therapy for DPN, excluding animal or in vitro studies, review papers, conference abstracts, and editor letters. Background: Recent trials confirmed the efficacy and safety of endovascular thrombectomy in patients with low Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS); however, evidence in tandem lesions is limited. This study evaluates endovascular thrombectomy safety and efficacy in patients with acute large-vessel occlusion with tandem lesions, stratified by baseline ASPECTS.

Methods and results: We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from 16 centers. Inclusion criteria included the following: age ≥18 years, anterior circulation tandem lesions, endovascular thrombectomy < 24 hours of symptom onset, and ≥70% internal carotid artery stenosis/occlusion. Patients were categorized into low (0-5) and high (6-10) ASPECTS. Inverse probability of treatment weighting matching was used to balance the groups. Primary outcomes included the following: 90-day modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score 0 to 2 and symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage. Secondary outcomes included the following: ordinal mRS, mRS 0 to 3, modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction ≥2b and 2c-3, petechial hemorrhage, parenchymal hematoma (1/2), early neurologic improvement, and mortality. Of 691 patients, 44 had ASPECTS 0 to 5 and 505 had ASPECTS 6 to 10. Patients with low ASPECTS had lower odds of 90-day mRS 0 to 2 (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 0.48; P=0.036) and higher odds of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (adjusted OR, 3.78; P=0.014). Delta-like Ligand 3 (DLL3) targeting therapies are promising in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) treatment. However, DLL3 expression in SCLC and other neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) is heterogeneous and not well characterized. We describe the landscape of DLL3 at the mRNA and protein levels across SCLC, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC), and non-small cell lung cancer. Additionally, we explore its expression in extra-pulmonary NEN (EP-NEN) using a standardized DLL3 IHC assay. DLL3 expression is enriched in SCLC, LCNEC along with combined histology lung cancers. This narrative review seeks to summarize chemotherapeutic regimens commonly used for patients with newly diagnosed Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome-negative B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) in the frontline setting and to describe the latest clinical research using the bispecific T-cell-engaging immunotherapy blinatumomab in the first-line treatment setting. Current standard-of-care chemotherapeutic backbones for newly diagnosed Ph-negative BCP-ALL are based on the same overarching treatment principle: to reduce disease burden to undetectable levels and maintain lasting remission. The adult treatment landscape has progressively evolved following the adoption of pediatric-inspired regimens. Desmoplastic melanoma (DM) is an uncommon subtype of cutaneous melanoma that presents distinct diagnostic and treatment challenges. This review aims to explore the role of adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) in managing DM. To evaluate this question, we reviewed relevant published reports on DM and its treatment and synthesized these findings. It was found that the clinical behavior of DM varies significantly based on its classification as either "pure" DM (pDM, ≥90% desmoplastic features) or mixed DM (mDM, ≤90% desmoplastic features). Patients with pDM have a uniquely high risk of local recurrence but a relatively lower likelihood of nodal disease. Recent …

The focus of this study was to identify risk factors for severe and critical COVID-19, evaluate local respiratory immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and develop a prognostic tool for COVID-19 severity using accessible early indicators. Using nasopharyngeal swab samples from hospitalized patients with COVID-19 of varying severity during the first wave of the pandemic from March to May 2020 in Louisiana, we evaluated the association between COVID-19 severity and viral load, respiratory immune mediators, and demographic/clinical factors. Activin receptor type 1 (ACVR1; ALK2) and activin receptor like type 1 (ACVRL1; ALK1) are transforming growth factor beta family receptors that integrate extracellular signals of bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs) and activins into Mothers Against Decapentaplegic homolog 1/5 (SMAD1/SMAD5) signaling complexes. Several activating mutations in ALK2 are implicated in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas, and ependymomas. The ALK2 R206H mutation is also present in a subset of endometrial tumors, melanomas, non-small lung cancers, and colorectal cancers, and ALK2 expression is elevated in pancreatic cancer. BACKGROUND: Interleukin-37 (IL-37) has anti-inflammatory properties in innate and adaptive immunity. Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS), have increased serum levels of IL-37. However, it is unknown whether IL-37 has an inhibitory effect on ongoing autoimmune neuroinflammation, thus offering a potential MS therapy.

AIM: Here, we examined the effect of IL-37 in an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model after disease onset to determine if it was protective.

The care economy includes “the paid and unpaid labor and services that support caregiving in all its forms.” This work includes caring for children, the elderly, and those who are ill or have disabilities. Care work is often undervalued, underpaid, and without a fair system of work benefits in place (e.g. contracts, paid leave, workers’ rights) that in many cases falls disproportionately on women and communities of color. In this policy brief, we examine the care economy in Nevada by focusing on three areas of care: (1) child care; (2) elder care; and (3) mental and behavioral health care. In …

Background: Non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) may be associated with cardiovascular diseases; however, only a few studies have analyzed this relationship. We aimed to assess the epidemiologic data and the association between NAFLD and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in the United States. Methods: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database 2016-2019 was queried using ICD10-CM diagnostic codes to identify hospitalizations of AMI + NAFLD. Essential demographic variables were analyzed to determine the disparities in the prevalence of AMI hospitalizations and deaths among NAFLD patients. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models determined the association between NAFLD and AMI hospitalizations and death. …

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a culmination of over 200 known viruses. Most of these strains of viruses do not have any negative effect on humans. There are a handful of known strains that are high-risk and if infected, could lead to common warts, genital warts, or even cancer.
