Implementation Of High-Fidelity Simulation: Raising The Stakes For Registered Nursing Students, Brittany T. Allen-Marshall
Implementation Of High-Fidelity Simulation: Raising The Stakes For Registered Nursing Students, Brittany T. Allen-Marshall
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Critical thinking is a necessary skill for a nurse to possess to be safe and competent. The problem identified for this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project is the lack of utilization of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) at the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton (UACCM)—the DNP project aimed to implement HFS and reduce the critical thinking gap between RN students and practice. The DNP student evaluated student critical thinking with pre-and post-tests. The pre-and post-test results containing Next Generation (NGN) test items showed no statistical significance (p=0.25). The Nursing Anxiety and Self-Confidence with Clinical Decision Making© (NASC-CDM©) scale pre- …

Healthcare Experience Impact On First-Year Physician Assistant Students’ Communication Self-Efficacy, Joseph Tocco, Sara Maher, Sara Lolar
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Healthcare experience (HCE) is required by most physician assistant (PA) programs for application, but it is not known what role HCE might play in the success of PA students. Communication skills are an important trait for a successful clinician, and previous HCE might lead to an improved ability to communicate with patients. This study examined the relationship between PA students’ healthcare experience (HCE) and their communication self-efficacy (SE). Methods: First-year PA students from Michigan PA programs were eligible to participate in an anonymous electronic survey. A previously validated survey to assess communication SE was used. HCE was assigned into …

Effective patient education can help achieve better clinical outcomes, especially when a patient is managing a chronic illness. Despite patient education being an important skill in the professional formation of physicians, little is known about medical students’ perceptions and implementations of such strategies. After completing a chronic illness educational module, second-year medical students were asked to rate the importance of specific patient education strategies and to assess their use of said strategies in the module’s project assignment. Results indicated students utilized different patient education strategies from those they initially identified as most effective.

Background: With the adoption of the Astana Declaration on primary health care, modern approaches are being introduced in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The created national foundations of the nursing management system in Kazakhstan are a visible manifestation of a new organizational culture. In connection with the large-scale reform of nursing and the creation of a new position of nurses that meets modern social challenges and international requirements, the role of nurses in healthcare has increased significantly. In this study, we measured the actual scope of nursing practice among nurses in the medical organizations in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Anti-Inflammatory And Antioxidant Effects Of Sea Urchin Spine Extract, Dina Magdy El Gamal
The Undergraduate Research Journal
Diadema savignyi spine extract in an experimental setup using L929 cell line in vitro. The cell metabolic activity of L929 cells is tested through an MTT assay. The sea urchin spine extract is applied to the cells in two concentrations: 100 μg/ml (136% viability) and 200 μg/ml (95% viability). The bioactive components of the sea urchin spine are identified via GC-MS, and the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities are evaluated using catalase assay (CAT), glutathione (GSH), and nitric oxide (NO) tests. Results show that the GC-MS identified bioactive components including the anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant bisabolol oxide and the pro-inflammatory oleic acid. …

PURPOSE: Variability in contouring structures of interest for radiotherapy continues to be challenging. Although training can reduce such variability, having radiation oncologists provide feedback can be impractical. We developed a contour training tool to provide real-time feedback to trainees, thereby reducing variability in contouring.
METHODS: We developed a novel metric termed localized signed square distance (LSSD) to provide feedback to the trainee on how their contour compares with a reference contour, which is generated real-time by combining trainee contour and multiple expert radiation oncologist contours. Nine trainees performed contour training by using six randomly assigned training cases that included one …

SIU Journal of Medical Science Scholarly Works
Purpose
This study shows the impact of a 3-part population health and interprofessional education (IPE) curriculum on Physician Assistant (PA) students’ knowledge and experience of population health and systems thinking (PHST) and to promote a team-based approach to patient care and improve patient health and preventative services.
Methods
Human Resources and Services Administration funded a 5-year Primary Care and Training Enhancement grant in PHST. With this funding, the Department of Family and Community Medicine developed a three-part plan emphasizing interprofessional learning. The impact was measured using a 22-item survey measuring knowledge and experience of PHST delivered to PA students annually. …

The presentation focuses on the importance of activating background knowledge and gaining student attention in the learning process. The presentation will cover: information, understanding, background knowledge, purpose, and attention as they relate to the learning cycle. It will provide an example of the learning cycle in action. The presentation will discuss activating background knowledge through the lens of analysis, the four-part processing model, Scarborough’s Reading Rope, and connecting to prior knowledge. Finally, the presentation will lay out four instructional routines for gaining student attention and discuss critical thinking.

Nurse Engagement In Antibiotic Time-Outs: The Collaborative Process Of Leveraging Design To Disseminate Research Findings, Mary Lou Manning, Maribeth Kradel-Weitzel
College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations
INTRODUCTION: Research findings and knowledge translation are typically disseminated via presentations at professional meetings and publication in peer-review journals. However, other opportunities to translate research evidence into practice exist, including the use of visual cues.
AIM: The aim of this paper is to describe the collaborative process of translating key research findings into a clear and compelling visual communication tool.
DESIGN: As part of a multimodal research dissemination strategy, the researchers partnered with the University Health Communication Design Program faculty to develop a visual communication strategy to promote the use of antibiotic time-outs by nurses in a health system. An …

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) also referred to as Churg-Strauss syndrome is a rare vasculitis of the small to medium vessels. We present a rare case of acute coronary artery dissection brought on by EGPA, which generally has a poor prognosis. A 41-year-old male with history of bronchial asthma presented to the emergency room with a 2-week history of dyspnea, cough with clear phlegm, and fever. For the past eight months he had experienced episodes with similar symptoms relieved by steroids. CT chest showed bilateral upper lobe patchy opacities with extensive workup for infectious etiology being negative. He had peripheral …

Aga Khan University (AKU) has initiated mentorship programs for students and faculty at AKU Medical College (AKU- MC) and AKU School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKU-SONAM). This study aimed to explore perceptions of mentors, mentees, administrators (chairs, co-chairs, founder members and coordinators of the mentoring program) and leadership and further investigate the strengths and challenges faced by 'Faculty Mentorship Program' at AKU- MC.
Methods: We conducted a qualitative exploratory study from February till December 2021 after approval from AKU using purposive criterion sampling. Mentors, mentees, administrators …

Background; During internal jugular vein (IJV) cannulation, needle tip injury to vulnerable subjacent cervical anatomic structures can be prevented if the cannulating needle tip is not permitted, even momentarily, to penetrate the deep portion of the IJV wall, an event known as double-wall puncture (DWP), also called posterior wall puncture. Methods; We conducted a 6-year ultrasound-guided IJV cannulation quality improvement project, seeking to minimize the occur-rence of DWP in 228 adult patients using needles of different gauge and tip sharpness. Most needles were length-optimized to the distance between the skin puncture site and the IJV mid-lumen for a selected angle …
