Wellness Literature Review – 2025, Martin Huecker, Brian A. Ferguson Jul 2026

Wellness Literature Review – 2025, Martin Huecker, Brian A. Ferguson

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Clinician well-being remains a persistent challenge, with ongoing burnout and psychological distress despite efforts by systems and individuals. This Journal of Wellness annual review covers studies published in 2025.

Methods: The Editors searched PubMed and Google Scholar for prospective and interventional studies / clinical trials in humans, with focus on well-being. Authors utilized artificial intelligence (AI)–based large language model (LLM) (ChatGPT, OpenAITM) to assist with preliminary identification of relevant studies, however authors noted significant AI-associated errors and outright misrepresentations requiring hand curated product generation and manual PubMed searches.

Literature in Review: We continue to appreciate a shift …

The Development And Evaluation Of A Comprehensive Well-Being Instrument For Health Professionals - The Corewellness Index, Nicholas E. Anton, Lauren Ball, Jeffrey S. Levy, Nicky Beaudoin, Catherine F. Pipas

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Healthcare worker wellness has received increasing attention from medical educators and healthcare systems given its importance to provider longevity and patient care. Wellness is multidimensional, and very few instruments evaluate all domains of wellness. Our team developed a comprehensive measure to evaluate the multi-dimensional nature of wellness. The purposes of this study were divided into four phases: phase 1) detail the development, design, and initial dissemination of the instrument, phase 2) collect feasibility and normative data for a diverse sample of healthcare workers, phase 3) evaluate the internal reliability of the measure and its component domains, and phase 4) …

Evaluating The Feasibility And Acceptability Of A Facilitator-Guided Wellness Initiative In A Residency Program, Alexander A. Missner, Jacob Gilbreth, Stacey Kaltman, Mayada Akil

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Burnout in residency is a significant concern. There is an urgent need for feasible and transferable interventions that enhance resident well-being. Toward this end, we implemented a wellness intervention in a psychiatry residency program in 2019. Goals of the intervention included: 1) creating a safe space for sharing experiences in a supportive environment, 2) fostering group cohesion, and 3) addressing developmental challenges in training. We evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention.

Methods: This study utilized a mixed methods design. Following the 2022-2023 academic year, residents completed a survey examining their perceptions of how well the …

Pulse Check: Im Resident Wellness Initiative -- A Continuous Qi Project, Jacqueline Bekhit, Ngoc Vu, Yasasvi Sabbineni, Nihar Raju, Parth Patel, Teena Mathew

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

Background Burnout is a psychological syndrome that arises from chronic workplace stress that has not been effectively managed. It is characterized by emotional exhaustion, increased mental distance or cynicism toward one’s work, and a sense of reduced professional efficacy (WHO, 2019). Due to the long work hours, high workload, and extensive training demands, medical residents are particularly vulnerable to experiencing burnout, contributing to higher rates of anxiety and depression. Burnout typically emerges mid-intern year and progresses through the remainder of residency. Burnout can contribute to higher medical errors, decreased work efficiency, and poor patient-physician interactions.

Implementation And Evaluation Of A Wellness Program In A First-Year Medical Student Anatomy Course, Gina R. Lepore, Gavin Turner, Benjamin Abramoff, Daniel Depietro, Nicole Robinson

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Cadaveric dissection is a central component to anatomy education. However, for many students, dissection can be emotionally taxing, highlighting a potential area for increased support. This project evaluated the implementation of a wellness program within a dissection-based anatomy course.

Methods: Throughout a 12-week first-year medical student anatomy course, two teaching assistants (TAs) served as “Wellness TAs” and implemented a structured wellness program that included weekly office hours, supportive emails to students that addressed emotionally challenging coursework, and scheduled “wellness breakfasts/snack breaks.” An anonymous survey was distributed following the course. The survey assessed demographics, perceptions of the anatomical …

Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement

Burnout afflicts 35% to 44% of pediatric oncology physicians, nurses, and interprofessional staff and is related to excessive workloads and emotional exhaustion. Conversely, a healthy work environment is a protective factor for burnout among physicians and nurses. Meaningful recognition is a published standard necessary for creating a healthy work environment. This study aimed to reduce staff burnout through firgun, defined as a heartfelt way to express accomplishments of another person. Pediatric oncology staff completed a firgun educational module and logged acts of firgun during a 3-month study period. Validated measures assessing burnout, workplace civility, well-being, work-life balance, and perceived …

Psychiatric Associations With Barriers To Use Of Mental Health Services In Medical Students, E. Cadence Rarity, Nora Newcomb, Aishwarya Vuppala, Jade Brunicardi, Kim Van, Amelia C. Phillips

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Medical students experience stress, anxiety, and depression at rates greater than those of the general population. Medical students also underutilize mental health services. There exists a need for a comprehensive, multivariate analysis of the reasons medical students do not pursue mental health services, and the undesirable mental health outcomes that are associated with these barriers. This study associates psychiatric phenomena of stress, anxiety, and depression within the context of barriers to use of mental health services in medical students.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, medical students (N = 128) from the University of South Florida engaged with …

Physician Assistant Student Well-Being: Where Do We Go From Here?, Richard Gilbert Jr., Michael Asbach

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges

Burnout and mental wellness have become a focus for both practicing providers and individuals in medical training programs. While techniques that assist in burnout and stress mitigation can vary, few techniques have been evaluated in the physician assistant student population. Green spaces have been utilized to reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and improve an individual’s well-being. To evaluate what is currently being utilized to improve physician assistant student well-being this study utilized the PubMed search engine for collection of a scholarly review. A qualitative review of the literature was completed along with a comparison of what green space exposure could …

The “Ob Guide”: A Proposed Adjunct To The “Intern Survival Guide” And Its Effect On Resident Wellness, Aaishah Vohra, Lola Adeleye, Zara Soomro, Maria Crompton, Tasaduq Mir

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Background: Residency is defined by constant change. The expectations, specialty, preceptor teaching styles and varied knowledge sets needed for each rotation differ greatly. As a result, residents are forced to adapt their learning styles quickly, to ensure they optimize the small amount of time allotted to them. Multiple studies have shown the high levels of stress, depression, anxiety and impostor syndrome that run rampant throughout medical learners, residents included. Our residency program has recently started a new obstetrics rotation with many requirements still unknown. This study evaluates the efficacy of the update to the “The Intern Survival Handbook” in mitigating …
