Methodological Progress Note: Logic Models, Molly J Horstman, Kyler M Godwin Apr 2026

Methodological Progress Note: Logic Models, Molly J Horstman, Kyler M Godwin

Faculty and Staff Publications

Logic models are an accessible tool to organize the planning, management, and evaluation of programs across healthcare disciplines. This methodological progress note describes the five standard components of a logic model (Inputs, Activities, Outputs, Outcomes, and Impact) and provides guidance for developing a logic model. Logic models offer a visual representation of the work and theory of a program and should be created with input from all interested parties. Logic models are living tools that need to be revised as programs evolve and new information becomes available.

Key Points:

  1. Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) is a global public health problem; however, its mediators remain poorly known, in part due to the lack of a reliable animal model.

  2. A combination of high fat and adenine diet recapitulate some of the CKD and metabolic phenotypes of CKM.

  3. This model also demonstrates myocardial fibrosis and peripheral artery disease with sex-based differences and can be leveraged to probe mechanisms of CKM.

Background: Cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome is a public health problem in the United States and results in premature cardiovascular disease at a relatively preserved GFR. The molecular mediators of CKM are poorly understood, partly …

Ataxia-Telangiectasia Mutated Activation Mediates Transforming Growth Factor Beta Signaling In Acetaminophen-Induced Liver Injury In Mice, Matthew Mcmillin, Christopher S Chu, Elaina Williams, Juliet Venter, Kiersten Bell, Anca D Petrescu, Patrick Mireles, Sharon Demorrow

Faculty and Staff Publications

Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose is associated with increased transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1) signaling and elevated oxidative stress, which exacerbate DNA damage. TGFβ1 has been shown to regulate ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (ATM) signaling and DNA repair in other cell types. This study investigates the DNA damage response (DDR) during APAP-induced liver injury, focusing on ATM-mediated regulation of TGFβ1 signaling. APAP administration in vitro and in vivo resulted in DNA damage, increased ATM signaling, accumulation of γH2AX, and activation of phosphorylated ataxia telangiectasia mutated (pATM) and phosphorylated checkpoint kinase 2 (pChk2). Pretreatment with an ATM inhibitor, KU55933, attenuated APAP-induced hepatocyte damage and …

Ertapenem As An Antibiotic Prophylaxis For Colectomies And Laparotomies: A Systematic Review, Stephanie Martinez Ugarte, Mokunfayo O Fajemisin, Beatriz Varman, Parker C Towns, Elias A Chamely, Renee W Green, William D Rieger, Susan H Wootton, Lillian S Kao

Library Staff Publications

Introduction: Given concerns for antibiotic resistance, broader spectrum antibiotic agents such as ertapenem are being used for pre-operative prophylaxis. We hypothesize that pre-operative ertapenem prior to laparotomies and colectomies is superior at decreasing surgical site infections (SSIs) compared with other widely used antibiotic agents.

Methods: Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were queried for studies until February 02, 2025. Studies were excluded if they did not evaluate ertapenem as a pre-operative antibiotic prophylaxis in patients undergoing laparotomy or colectomy, the outcome was not SSIs, or it represented a review of prior publications. Three reviewers independently extracted relevant …

Faculty and Staff Publications

Overuse of antibiotics is a concern in 'culture-negative sepsis' but it is unclear whether this is due to infection with viruses, fungi or other microbes that are not easily cultured, or whether it results from inflammatory processes. In a prospective study, we enrolled 50 preterm neonates with culture-positive sepsis (CP), culture-negative sepsis (CN), and asymptomatic preterm controls (CO). The microbiome of stool, skin, and blood, including bacterial, viral and fungal components and serum cytokine profiles were evaluated. The microbiome alpha or beta diversity did not differ between CN and CO groups. A MaAsLin analysis revealed increased relative abundances of specific …

Community-Engaged Medical Student Elective To Improve Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Kathryn J Kemere, Nital Appelbaum, Priya Chandan, Elisha Acosta

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face multiple barriers to inclusion throughout life. One barrier is the medical knowledge and biases of adult healthcare providers with diagnoses traditionally associated with childhood. Medical school curricula have limited content related to IDD, and students have limited opportunities to engage with community organizations during their clinical years. Methods: We created a one-month clinical elective to address medical students' attitudes and knowledge regarding individuals with IDD using experiential learning. Students saw adult patients in our primary care clinic with a variety of IDD diagnoses and spent 30% of their time at community sites …

Pedagogical Content Knowledge As A Lens For Transforming Teaching In Medical And Health Professions Education, Peter J Boedeker, Nancy P Moreno, Alana D Newell, Atul Maheshwari, Matthew A Mcmillin, Samantha P Tippen, Malford T Pillow, Andrew D Bergemann

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) is the separate, topic-specific, specialized knowledge of educators that integrates subject matter expertise with effective teaching strategies in response to an identified learner misconception or to optimize teaching. Although PCK has been used for decades as a framework for understanding the often-tacit ability of an educator to educate well, little has been done to bring this framework into medical and health professions education. We provide examples of PCK in various contexts, including large -group lectures, problem-based learning sessions, and bedside teaching. Finally, we present a tool for capturing instances of PCK that can be used to …

Deconstructing The Extended Focused Assessment With Sonography In Trauma (E-Fast) As A Roadmap For Longitudinal Integration Of Point Of Care Ultrasound Education Within Undergraduate Medical Education, Cherie Tator, Maria Maldonado, Nadia Ismail, Kiyetta H Alade, Alan Riley Jun 2025

Deconstructing The Extended Focused Assessment With Sonography In Trauma (E-Fast) As A Roadmap For Longitudinal Integration Of Point Of Care Ultrasound Education Within Undergraduate Medical Education, Cherie Tator, Maria Maldonado, Nadia Ismail, Kiyetta H Alade, Alan Riley

Faculty and Staff Publications

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has been embraced by most medical specialties, yet undergraduate medical education still has difficulty incorporating POCUS skill development and assessment. While much of the existing literature focuses on specific POCUS and/or ultrasound topics, the feasibility as well as ensuring POCUS topics are relevant to all undergraduate medical education (UME) learners are often left unaddressed. The authors outline a novel, outcomes-driven, longitudinal POCUS curriculum designed around a "deconstructed" Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (E-FAST) exam, which facilitated purposeful integration of POCUS and medical imaging topics into organ system-based foundational courses. Curriculum development strategies specific to POCUS …

Exploring Teacher Behaviors That Support Student Self-Regulated Learning In The Clinical Environment, Stephanie B Corliss, Emily K Vinas, Andrew D Bergemann, Jonathan A Macclements, Elizabeth A Nelson

Faculty and Staff Publications

Introduction: With rapidly evolving clinical practice and medical knowledge, future doctors must be independent lifelong learners. Self-regulated learning (SRL) represents a formalized approach to lifelong learning, involving cycles of planning, learning, assessment, and adjustment. Medical schools can create clinical environments where learners are instructed in SRL and encouraged to routinely practice using it. Clinical educators can provide guidance in SRL by co-regulating learning with students. The purpose of this study is to explore how clinical teachers co-regulate the learning process with students during clinical clerkships.

Methods: Data was analyzed from student evaluations of clinical teaching faculty and residents during clinical …
