BACKGROUND: Lean concepts, including Daily Management Systems (DMS), have been adopted by health systems to prioritize high-quality and efficient care. Since 2018, our residency program has utilized a daily readiness huddle (key component of DMS) to prepare inpatient residents for their workday. This is a time when residents can raise administrative and/or clinical patient safety concerns. Concerns unable to be immediately resolved locally are designated as Quick Hits (QH) and escalated through residency and hospital leadership with resolutions cascaded back to frontline providers. With <10% of residents on inpatient services each month, a gap in overall resident awareness of findings from resolved QH exists, posing potential patient safety risks. OBJECTIVE/AIM: We aimed to improve the weekly percentage of findings from resolved QH communicated to every resident (rather than only those in attendance at the daily readiness huddle) from 0% to >95% within 6 months. METHODS: A core team was created consisting of residency program leadership (DIO, …

Standardizing Resident Education On Gi Service, Jennifer Halma, Kenneth Schmidt Dec 2021

Standardizing Resident Education On Gi Service, Jennifer Halma, Kenneth Schmidt

Posters

Introduction: The pediatric residency curriculum at Children’s Mercy Hospital is standardized to offer each trainee the same rotational experience. As a result, each resident spends one month on the inpatient gastroenterology (GI) service during training. This invites variability in the quantity and quality of GI education that residents receive. Therefore, there is a need to design a standard curriculum to provide comprehensive GI education. The aim of this project is to standardize resident education by identifying most requested topics and providing didactic education to increase resident general GI knowledge. Methods: Each month, residents were provided with a survey to assess …

Teaching Pediatric Procedural Pain And Anxiety Management To Residents: Early Outcomes Of A Newly Developed Curriculum, Jennifer J. Dilts, Brian R. Lee, Shobhit Jain, Ross Newman, Sarah Fouquet, Michael Brancato, Kadriye O. Lewis May 2021

Teaching Pediatric Procedural Pain And Anxiety Management To Residents: Early Outcomes Of A Newly Developed Curriculum, Jennifer J. Dilts, Brian R. Lee, Shobhit Jain, Ross Newman, Sarah Fouquet, Michael Brancato, Kadriye O. Lewis

Background: Poorly managed pediatric pain has negative long-term outcomes, including needle phobia, increased pain and anxiety with subsequent procedures, and healthcare avoidance in adulthood. Evidence-based interventions to reduce procedural pain and anxiety are vastly underutilized, and a literature search revealed no specific curriculum to teach residents optimal skills for pain and anxiety management in minor procedures (e.g. venipuncture, laceration repair). Thus, we developed a multimedia-based lecture with PowerPoint, utilizing results from a focus group interview (conducted with 7 pediatric residents, to determine educational content and identify residents’ needs and learning preferences).

Objective: To measure residents’ learning outcomes (knowledge, attitudes, perceived …

Background: Culture and language coaching in the CHiCoS (Clínica Hispana de Cuidados de Salud) Program provides bilingual (English-Spanish) residents with longitudinal, personalized training in health care Spanish and cultural aspects of care. This intensive 1:1 training by a culture and language coach (CLC) over three years has been shown to improve residents’ skills and family satisfaction with care. Families’ perspectives on acceptability of the presence and impact of the CLC during visits have not been formally described.

Objective:

Design/Methods: In this descriptive, cross-sectional pilot study, we surveyed Spanish-speaking caregivers who received care from any of 18 bilingual CHiCoS residents accompanied …

Physicians’ Burnout: A First Step To Development Of A Wellness Curriculum, Tyler Smith, Katherine E. Mason, David D. Williams, Kadriye O. Lewis May 2021

Physicians’ Burnout: A First Step To Development Of A Wellness Curriculum, Tyler Smith, Katherine E. Mason, David D. Williams, Kadriye O. Lewis

Posters

Background: Prevalence of burnout among physicians is a critical issue impacting all career levels. Identifying burnout begins in medical training with trainees and early career physicians at risk for depression and burnout1. Participation in wellness programs may mitigate burnout perhaps during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online physician wellness activities i.e., coaching and training are offered at a free-standing children’s hospital in the Midwest USA. These programs are well received, but there is no specific curriculum addressing physicians’ wellness needs within the Division of General Academic Pediatrics (GAP). In designing a meaningful program, we conducted a needs assessment survey to gauge GAP …

Virtual Child Neurology Education During Covid-19 And Beyond, Jennifer J. Dilts, Rose N. Gelineau-Morel May 2021

Virtual Child Neurology Education During Covid-19 And Beyond, Jennifer J. Dilts, Rose N. Gelineau-Morel

Posters

Background: Even prior to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Children’s Mercy Kansas City’s large neurology division struggled to engage learners in educational conferences. With 113 division members across 5 locations, attending conferences was challenging. While some conferences were live-streamed, we offered no recorded lectures, and most conferences were attended solely by trainees and 3-4 select faculty. COVID-19 eliminated in-person group learning opportunities.

Objective: We aimed to rapidly develop and implement a comprehensive and inclusive virtual child neurology curriculum and assess its impact.

Design/Methods: We created a neurology education “team” using Microsoft® Teams. Within 1 week of beginning social distancing, …

Background: Adequate echocardiographic (echo) education is integral to successful cardiology training. Online education is proven to be effective in other specialties, but pediatric echo training data are lacking. Our aim was to design and assess the role of a novel online module-based curriculum to enhance pediatric cardiology fellows’ echo education.

Methods: Four interactive modules, focused on principles and interpretation of a normal echo, were delivered to fellows. Content included high quality 2D and 3D echo clips (Fig 1A) as well as interactive quizzes (Fig 1B) and could be accessed from a phone, tablet, or computer. All fellows completed pre- and …

Through this quality improvement project, we have assessed the current fellows' upper endoscopy skill level during their first year and determined that the time to achieving proficiency is significantly longer than desired. The goal is to prepare new fellows for endoscopy prior to the beginning of their rotations with a curriculum that includes assigned reading materials, videos, and simulated endoscopic cases, to promote safety and increase satisfaction of patients by improving the readiness, skill level, and the confidence of first year inexperienced fellows.

A Pre And Post Survey To Evaluate Patient Perception Of Group Diabetes Self-Management Education In Rural Health Clinics, Stormy Carter, Ashleigh Heter

Posters

Diabetes is a significant clinical issue in the primary care setting. Providers struggle to overcome barriers to facilitate therapeutic interventions for populations served. The specific aim of this study was to assess group diabetes self-management education from a patient perspective. Evaluation of diabetes knowledge and self-efficacy confidence was conducted in rural primary care clinics using pre and post surveys. This study utilized a one-group pretest-posttest design to patients receiving group diabetes self-management education in Southeast Kansas rural primary care clinics by a certified diabetes educator. The surveyed population included individuals ages 18-65 with prediabetes, type I, or type II diabetes …
