A Novel And Clinically Useful Dynamic Conformal Arc (Dca)-Based Vmat Planning Technique For Lung Sbrt, Damodar Pokhrel, Justin Visak, Lana Sanford
Radiation Medicine Faculty Publications
PURPOSE: Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) is gaining popularity for stereotactic treatment of lung lesions for medically inoperable patients. Due to multiple beamlets in delivery of highly modulated VMAT plans, there are dose delivery uncertainties associated with small-field dosimetry error and interplay effects with small lesions. We describe and compare a clinically useful dynamic conformal arc (DCA)-based VMAT (d-VMAT) technique for lung SBRT using flattening filter free (FFF) beams to minimize these effects.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten solitary early-stage I-II non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients were treated with a single dose of 30 Gy using 3-6 non-coplanar VMAT arcs (clinical …

Perianal Basal Cell Carcinoma: A Common Cancer In An Uncommon Location., Ed Hagen, Nathan Hite, John A Griffin, Rodney Kratz
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
This is a case of a perianal basal cell carcinoma, a common skin cancer in an unusual location. Our patient is a 67-year-old male with a perianal lesion. He first noticed this painless lesion 5 years prior to presentation and was having fecal incontinence and weight loss. He had a fully encompassing ulcerated lesion involving the entirety of the anal margin. We performed a biopsy that returned on pathology as a basal cell carcinoma. Due to the size of the lesion and his current nutritional status, it was determined to be unresectable. We were able to provide him with a …

Clear and precise writing is a vital skill for healthcare providers and those involved in global emergency care research. It allows one to publish in scientific literature and present oral and written summaries of their work. However, writing skills for publishing are rarely part of the curriculum in the healthcare education system. This review gives you a step-by-step guide on how to successfully write for scientific publication following the IMRaD principle (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) with every part supporting the key message. There are specific benefits of writing for publication that justify the extra work involved. Any lessons learned …

Pasteurization Of Human Donor Milk, Laura Brewer
Pasteurization Of Human Donor Milk, Laura Brewer
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Appropriate and adequate nutrition is critical to reduce the risk of mortality in the preterm infant (Parker, 2019). Mother’s own milk (MOM) is the best source of nutrition and reduces the risk of common neonatal complications, including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), infections resulting in late-onset sepsis, and retinopathy of prematurity (Li et al., 2017). When MOM is unavailable to the neonate, the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics both recommend that human donor milk is the next best option (Peila et al., 2016). Donor milk can be obtained from a human milk bank and is considered safe for …

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension, Alyssa Curry
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Chronic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare and underdiagnosed complication of unresolved acute pulmonary embolism (PE). A chronic fibrotic thrombus replaces the unresolved emboli in the pulmonary vascular bed causing pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension (Mahmud et al., 2018). Symptoms rang from mild nonspecific such as exercise intolerance and dyspnea. As the disease progresses, symptoms present similarly to right ventricular heart failure (Gopalan et al., 2016). Although the pathophysiology and etiology of CTEPH is still not fully understood, risk factors include increased size of the PE, right ventricular strain, chronic inflammation, and defects in fibrinolysis among others (Fernandes et al., 2016). Treatment …
A Comparison Between Rectal Dose In Prostate Radiotherapy Patients Treated With Spaceoar Hydrogel Present Versus Patients Treated Without Spaceoar Hydrogel., David Desano
Masters Projects
Introduction: External beam radiation therapy is a common treatment option for prostate cancer patients with localized disease. Radiation-induced side effects associated with the rectum can impact a patient’s ability to complete treatment or affect the quality of life years after radiation treatment. Spaceoar hydrogel has been developed to reduce radiation dose to nearby pelvis structures, and therefore decreasing potential side effects.
Methods: A total of 20 patients who received definitive radiation therapy to the prostate and seminal vesicles were selected and placed into 2 groups (10 spaceoar, 10 non-spaceoar). The individuals’ age ranged from 60 to 79 years old with …

Magnitude Of Screening For Gestational Diabetes Mellitus In An Urban Setting In Tanzania; A Cross-Sectional Analytic Study, Akampa Mukuve, Mariam Noorani, Ibrahim Sendagire, Miriam Mgonja
Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa
Background
Medical screening detects risk factors for disease or presence of disease in otherwise well persons in order to intervene early and reduce morbidity and mortality. During antenatal care (ANC) it is important to detect conditions that complicate pregnancy, like gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Despite international and local guidelines recommending screening for GDM during ANC, there is evidence to suggest that the practice was not being carried out adequately. A major challenge may be lack of consensus on uniform GDM screening and diagnostic guidelines internationally and locally.
The primary objective was to determine the magnitude of screening for GDM among …
