Characteristics Of Online Treatment Seekers Interested In A Text Messaging Intervention For Problem Drinking: Adults 51 And Older Versus Middle-Aged And Younger Adults, Alexis Kuerbis, Katherine Van Stolk-Cooke, Frederick J. Muench
Publications and Research
According to the Institute of Medicine, the vast older adult population is estimated to have mental health and substance use disorders at unprecedented rates and will place high demand on an unprepared healthcare system. Online and mobile health interventions, such as text messaging, could provide an alternative form of frontline intervention that could alleviate some of the burden on the healthcare system; however, it remains unknown what are characteristics of adults over 50 who might be interested in a mobile health behavioral intervention and how they may differ from their younger counterparts. To explore the characteristics of those interested in …
The Effect Of Mindfulness Meditation On Perceived Stress And Total Health Care Cost, Rachel Hale
The Effect Of Mindfulness Meditation On Perceived Stress And Total Health Care Cost, Rachel Hale
DNP Projects
Background: Chronic stress can lead to hypertension, tachycardia, and increased inflammatory markers, which put individuals at risk for chronic diseases. Mindful meditation not only decreases perceived stress but also has the potential to decrease the risk of chronic diseases and health care cost. Purpose: The purpose of this mindfulness meditation project is to reaffirm that mindfulness meditation decreases perceived stress scores and to determine whether mindfulness meditation decreases health care cost. Theoretical Model: The relation of mindfulness meditation, lowered stress levels, and chronic diseases can be explained by the social cognitive theory (SCT). Applying SCT, meditation’s goal is to alter …
A Study Of The Effectiveness Of The Crisis Care & Counseling Course Within The Special Operations Forces At The Joint Special Operations University, Mary Ann Quartetti
A Study Of The Effectiveness Of The Crisis Care & Counseling Course Within The Special Operations Forces At The Joint Special Operations University, Mary Ann Quartetti
Doctor of Education (Ed.D)
The Special Operations Forces have experienced a surge in PTSD and suicides in the past several years, now surpassing conventional military branches. Due to the attached stigma for seeking help from mental health professions and potential negative career effects, military personnel are more likely to seek counseling from their unit chaplain. The U.S. military does not require chaplains to have a counseling degree or certification in counseling as a prerequisite to performing duties as a chaplain, although most Masters of Divinity programs do include some counseling courses. The military does provide limited training to its chaplains in counseling. Special Operations …

A Comparative Analysis Of The West African Hemorrhagic Fevers Caused By The Lassa And Ebola Viruses, Emiene E. Amali-Adekwu
Selected Honors Theses
Lassa fever (LF) and Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever (EHF) are viral diseases endemic to West Africa. The etiological agent of Lassa fever is an enveloped virus from the Arenaviridae family and was first discovered in 1969 when two missionary nurses died of a mysterious illness in the town of Lassa in Borno state, Nigeria.1 This virus is animal-borne (zoonotic) and is carried by the animal vector Mastomys natalensis (multimammate rat). The Ebola virus is also zoonotic originating from fruit bats belonging to the Pteropodidae family.2 The first reported case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) was a principal who was believed to have …

This research examined the usefulness of art therapy techniques in the assessment of attachment in couples treatment. This case illustration consisted of one couple who were invited to complete four questionnaires, participate in individual and joint art making tasks. The participants also engaged in conversation and discussion about their art and their experience throughout the art making process. The data was then analyzed and categorized into three emerging themes: (1) Relational dynamic between participants (2) Relationship and response to the art, and (3) Integration of shared and personal experiences. Through the discussion of themes, researchers found that art techniques, specifically …
Dax-1 Gene Expression Regulation In Prostate Cancer Cells Through The Activation Of Androgen Receptors, Ryan Jann, Roxxana Beltran
Dax-1 Gene Expression Regulation In Prostate Cancer Cells Through The Activation Of Androgen Receptors, Ryan Jann, Roxxana Beltran
Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD
The nuclear hormone receptor DAX-1 (dosage-sensitive sex reversal, adrenal hypoplasia critical region, on chromosome X, gene 1) is associated with the development and progression of prostate cancer within human males. Previous studies on DAX-1 have suggested a repression of steroidogenesis, indicating an inverse correlation between DAX-1 and steroidogenic gene expressions. To further understand the role of DAX-1 in tumor growth and development, experimentation was performed on Androgen Receptor (AR) sensitive and insensitive prostate cancer cell lines. Analysis of the different gene expression patterns of prostate cancer cell lines (including a CRISPR DAX-1 negative cell line) under separate treatment conditions, provides …

Abstract
The RET proto-oncogene encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase that is activated by glial cell derived neutrotrophic factor (GDNF). Previous studies have found that a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), RETp (G691S), in the juxtamembrane domain enhances the signaling pathway and promotes tumor growth by GDNF in pancreatic and thyroid cancer in addition to melanoma. It is uncertain however whether this SNP is a germline variant or somatic mutation. A prior study reported that the RETp variant was a germline SNP in desmoplastic and non-desmoplastic melanomas. In the present study, we examined both melanoma tissue samples and matching peripheral blood DNA …

Hpv Vaccination Among Females With Mental And Physical Limitation, Melissa Rowe, Audra L. Pritt, Amanda J. Stratton, Jennie L. Yoost
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Introduction
Adolescent HPV vaccination rates lag behind other vaccinations, partly due to missed opportunities for vaccination and lack of provider recommendation. This study evaluated the rates of HPV vaccination among adolescents with physical and mental limitation and controls, and evaluated differences in parental knowledge and reasons for nonvaccination between groups.
Materials and Methods
A retrospective chart review was performed on female patients age 12-18 presenting to pediatric or gynecology clinics in 2012. Those subjects with a diagnosis of mental or physical limitation were classified as “affected”. HPV vaccination rates were compared between affected and control groups. Parents of affected subjects …

Angiosarcoma Of The Lower Extremity Presenting As Bilateral Pneumothoraces, Mark H. Cooper
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Abstract
Spontaneous pneumothorax usually presents as unilateral disease. Bilateral spontaneous pneumothoraces are less common and are more likely to be secondary than primary. We describe a case of bilateral spontaneous pneumothoraces that were resistant to conventional treatment, and found ultimately to be secondary to angiosarcoma of the lower extremity. A previously well 49 year old white female was referred to our institution in London with bilateral pneumothoraces. A left video assisted thoracoscopic procedure was undertaken, and the wedge resection of the lung specimen contained an area of metastatic tumor. Talc was placed into the left pleural cavity; talc was also …

Cognitive errors are the most common cause of diagnostic errors in the process of clinical decision making. Recently, there has been an immense focus on the new science of error prevention in health care. Anchored thinking or heuristics is a form of cognitive error that portrays shortcuts or abbreviated thinking in the light of diagnostic uncertainty. The risk is of comfort in a typical scenario and not being able to adapt to a new situation. Here we present an intriguing case of acute appendicitis in a patient who was initially admitted and treated for hypothermia and alcohol withdrawal. As the …

An Unusual Pulmonary Complication Of Statin Medication, Milliejoan Mongalo, Madhvi Shah, Lynne J. Goebel
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Statins or hydroxyl-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitors have proven efficacy at decreasing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Although statins have been prescribed safely, there should be more awareness of the possible adverse effects. Recently, we encountered a patient who had unexplained dyspnea, weakness, and immobility. The patient’s symptoms were alleviated after discontinuing the statin medication. Although we have no concrete evidence that her symptoms were due to the medication, the temporal relationship of symptom improvement upon discontinuation of the statin, led us to the conclusion that it could potentially have been the cause. Unexplained dyspnea is not listed as an …

Marshall Journal of Medicine
An influx of millennials is reshaping the workplace1—including the practice of medicine and the development of physicians in training. The attitudes, influencers, and behaviors of millennials don't align with traditional models of healthcare delivery or healthcare education.
Millennials in academic medicine represent the majority of medical students, residents, and small percentages of junior faculty. In the consumer world, millennial patients are also changing the game for healthcare industries.2 The millennial that grew up with broadband, smartphones, tablets and social media expects instant access to information and now infuses medicine with their attitudes, aspirations, and experiences. They have …

Mallampati Scoring And Its Relation To Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Austin Korczak
Honors Capstones
According to the American Sleep Apnea Association potentially 80% of moderate to severe cases of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) go undiagnosed with even optimistic estimates stating that at least 22 million Americans are afflicted by the disorder. These numbers are expected to continue to increase due to the rising rates of obesity in America. As a result, reliable criteria that can help physicians accurately predict the presence of an underlying sleep disorder, whose symptoms are masked during the day, is highly sought after. The objective of this research is to begin defining these criteria via a literature review of articles …

Colorectal Cancer Screenings In The United States, Charles Buhrman
Honors Capstones
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States behind lung cancer, so research is needed about this particular cancer (American Cancer Society, 2016). With medical advancements over the past decade, doctors are able to detect cancer symptoms earlier and treat cancers more readily. By compiling the medical record data for the Midwest and the Northeast, a picture can be painted that shows the prevalence of screenings in each region, and the mortality rates of those regions based on the amount of screenings done. The aim of this study is to examine the current colorectal cancer (CRC) …

Conclusions: Results suggest that it is not patterns of use or motivation to use social networks that could lead to concern about online …
Vascular Effects Of Dietary Supplement Bmpea On Mesenteric Porcine Vasculature, Clifford Cooper
Vascular Effects Of Dietary Supplement Bmpea On Mesenteric Porcine Vasculature, Clifford Cooper
Masters Theses
β-methylphenylethylamine (BMPEA) was first synthesized in the 1930’s as a potential stimulant and amphetamine replacement. It was expected to act as an indirect sympathomimetic agent that binds to peripheral α- and β- adrenergic receptors to control vascular responses in peripheral sites. The effects of BMPEA were never studied in humans, but due to its structural similarity to amphetamines as well as the effects noticed in animal studies in the 1920’s and 1930’s, BMPEA was assumed to work as a vasoconstrictor. In the current study, porcine mesenteric arteries were used as a model following confirmation of arterial viability with the known …
