Staff Nurse Perception Of Professional Role Modeling For Student Nurses In The Clinical Learning Environment, Tamara Montgomery Apr 2017

Staff Nurse Perception Of Professional Role Modeling For Student Nurses In The Clinical Learning Environment, Tamara Montgomery

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Acute care settings continue to be the primary setting for undergraduate nursing education clinical experiences. Staff nurses in acute care settings are expected to provide nursing care with pre-licensure nursing students at their side (even though there are little to no incentives for staff nurses to provide mentoring leadership), which most often takes the form of professional role modeling. In addition, there is no clear evaluative expectation that motivates staff nurses to provide contextual role modeling. Without stated expectations, staff nurse perception of the significance of role modeling for pre-licensure non-precepted nursing students may be deficient.

Because fifty-six percent of …

Mentorship has widespread support among many disciplines for the impact on improved job satisfaction, decreased job turnover and decreased costs to organizations. Ongoing support through mentorship is critical to nurses transitioning to a new role and nurse mentors must be prepared for the role with relevant education tailored to their needs . Though literature describing training programs for mentors is limited, some studies have reported an increase in confidence among mentors after training. In addition, improved mentoring skills (that includes communication) is in literature.

Nasal Spray Can Save Lives: Engaging Emergency Department Nurses In The Provision Of Naloxone Nasal Spray To High Risk Patients, Paula Kobelt

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The opioid overdose epidemic continues to escalate in the United States. Some of the morbidity and mortality associated with opioid overdose can be prevented with the timely administration of naloxone, an opioid reversal agent. The literature emphasized that the emergency department (ED) venue and registered nurses are well positioned to screen and identify high risk individuals whether they present as a result of an overdose or for other medical reasons. The literature also pointed to the importance of providing naloxone to high risk individuals and those who would be most likely to be at the scene of an overdose. This …

Prevention Of Overuse Injuries In High School Athletes, Edna H. Wright Apr 2017

Prevention Of Overuse Injuries In High School Athletes, Edna H. Wright

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Overuse injuries are a significant health problem that affects the health and well-being of adolescent athletes. Almost 50 percent of sports-related injuries in the adolescent population are considered overuse injuries and half of these injuries are preventable. Overuse injuries occur over time when repetitive demands, placed on the musculoskeletal system, result in tissue damage. The purpose of the DNP project was to educate high school coaches on the identification and prevention of overuse injuries in adolescent athletes. The project was designed with the goal of quantifying knowledge acquired by coaches participating in the project. Prevention and reduction of overuse injuries …

In this work, the ceramic coating separator (CCS-CS) prepared with polyethylene (PE) separator, Al₂O₃ inorganic particles, carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) mix binders is further modified by coating with a thin polydopamine (PDA) layer through a simple chemical deposition method. Compared with the bare ceramic coating separator, the PDA-modified CCS-CS (CCS-CS-PDA) exhibits excellent thermal stability, which shows no thermal shrinkage after storing at 200 °C for 30 min. Compared with the PE separator, both the uptake and wettability with the electrolyte and water of CCS-CS-PDA are improved significantly. Meanwhile, when saturated with liquid electrolyte, the CCS-CS-PDA also …

Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Student And Family Perspectives On Using Augmentative And Alternative Communication Devices, Saili S. Kulkarni, Jessica Parmar

Faculty Publications

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices are essential to children with disabilities that result in complex communication needs (CCN) to fully participate in social and academic realms of life. As the numbers of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) learners in schools increase, so does the imperative to better inform instruction for CLD students who use AAC devices. This paper reviewed N=14 articles that emphasized CLD students who use AAC devices and their families. Implications highlighted that Euro-American culture dominates many aspects of AAC use, assessment, and professional recommendations. Additionally, there are limited perspectives of AAC users and families from CLD, …

Chuukese Migrant Women In Guam: Perceptions Of Barriers To Health Care, Margaret Hattori-Uchima

Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal

This descriptive qualitative study examined perceived barriers to health care among Chuukese migrant women in Guam and explored which factors influenced health-seeking behaviors. Study participants recommended interventions which may reduce those perceived barriers. Since the Compact of Free Association with the United States was enacted in 1985, there has been a dramatic rise in the numbers of Chuukese migrating to Guam. This migration is anticipated to continue with more migrants needing health care, education, and social services. Little is known about their perceptions of barriers to health care services or the cultural, social, economic, and other factors that influence their …

Sleep-Wake Disorders And A Look At Insomnia Through Biological And Behavioral Perspectives, Mia Fontanarosa Apr 2017

Sleep-Wake Disorders And A Look At Insomnia Through Biological And Behavioral Perspectives, Mia Fontanarosa

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

Insomnia is defined by difficulties in falling asleep, maintaining sleep, and problems with early morning awakenings. Unfortunately, due to these symptoms daytime fatigue often follows. Daytime fatigue may have a severe impact on an individual’s day. Insomnia symptoms may not exist alone, however. Individuals who are diagnosed with insomnia have another disorder present as well. Often insomnia is paired with anxiety and mood disorders. Therefore, insomnia can be viewed through the biological and behavioral perspectives. Insomnia is a disorder that can be treated. The most common treatment would be cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, but treatment is not limited to …

Cervical Ectropion May Be A Cause Of Desquamative Inflammatory Vaginitis., Leia Mitchell, Michelle King, Heather Brillhart, Andrew Goldstein

Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Publications

Desquamative inflammatory vaginitis is a poorly understood chronic vaginitis with an unknown etiology. Symptoms of desquamative inflammatory vaginitis include copious yellowish discharge, vulvovaginal discomfort, and dyspareunia. Cervical ectropion, the presence of glandular columnar cells on the ectocervix, has not been reported as a cause of desquamative inflammatory vaginitis. Although cervical ectropion can be a normal clinical finding, it has been reported to cause leukorrhea, metrorrhagia, dyspareunia, and vulvovaginal irritation. Patients with cervical ectropion and desquamative inflammatory vaginitis are frequently misdiagnosed with candidiasis or bacterial vaginosis and repeatedly treated without resolution of symptoms. We report the case of a 34-year-old woman …

Social Support In Collegiate Athletics: An Evaluation Of The Efficacy Of Perceived Social Support Among Injured College Athletes And Its Effect Upon Well-Being Throughout The Rehabilitation Process, Gabriella Bores

Selected Honors Theses

Athletic injuries are increasingly common at the collegiate level. These injuries not only produce physical detriments, but often elicit emotional responses as well. As a result, injured athletes are often facing increased stress and are in dire need of social support throughout the rehabilitation process. This study seeks to add to the amassing literature on the stress-buffer hypothesis and evaluates social support provided by athletic trainers, coaches, teammates, and professors and instructors for injured collegiate athletes. Qualitative findings revealed the most commonly expressed type of social support was emotional support from coaches, teammates, and professors, while tangible support was the …

Determining The Protective Effects Of Quercetin Against Cadmium Toxicity In Human Embryonic Kidney Cells, Caroline N. Smith Apr 2017

Determining The Protective Effects Of Quercetin Against Cadmium Toxicity In Human Embryonic Kidney Cells, Caroline N. Smith

Undergraduate Theses

Cadmium is a toxic industrial and environmental pollutant found in groundwater, air, soils, food and cigarettes. Chronic intake of low levels of cadmium has been shown to result in renal dysfunction due to cell death which can occur via apoptosis as well as necrosis. Previous studies have shown that plant extracts containing quercetin, a flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables, protect against cadmium toxicity in rat liver hepatocytes. To determine if quercetin may have a protective effect in a cadmium-treated human embryonic kidney cell line, HEK-293 cells were treated using concentrations of cadmium chloride from 10 to 50 μM …

Methods: We gave chemoprevention by dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine, albendazole and praziquantel to 338 afebrile children with haemoglobin concentration ≥70 g/L. We randomly allocated them to daily home fortification for 30 days with either …

Evaluating The Impact Of Key Phrases And Caring Behaviors© On Nursing Students’ Perception Of Competence And Confidence In Providing Spiritual Care, Joan Marie Connors Apr 2017

Evaluating The Impact Of Key Phrases And Caring Behaviors© On Nursing Students’ Perception Of Competence And Confidence In Providing Spiritual Care, Joan Marie Connors

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

Spirituality in nursing involves caring holistically for patients. Attention to the mind, body, and spirit, is a professional standard of care for nurses. Regulating agencies in the healthcare industry as well as professional code of conduct mandate that spiritual care will be addressed. While this in not a new concept to nursing, research revealed that lack of education was one obstacle nurses identified that limited their ability to provide spiritual care. There is a lack of teaching resources to educate nurses on spiritual care. A previous study conducted by Connors, Good, and Gollery (2017), introduced the instrument Key Phrases and …

Melatonin And Its Metabolites Protect Human Melanocytes Against Uvb-Induced Damage: Involvement Of Nrf2-Mediated Pathways, Zorica Janjetovic, Stuart G. Jarrett, Elizabeth F. Lee, Cory Duprey, Russel J. Reiter, Andrzej T. Slominski

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Ultraviolet light (UV) is an inducer of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as 6-4-photoproducts and cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD) in the skin, which further cause damage to the skin cells. Irradiation of cultured human melanocytes with UVB stimulated ROS production, which was reduced in cells treated with melatonin or its metabolites: 6-hydroxymelatonin (6-OHM), N1-acetyl-N2-formyl-5-methoxykynuramine (AFMK), N-acetylserotonin (NAS), and 5-methoxytryptamine (5-MT). Melatonin and its derivatives also stimulated the expression of NRF2 (nuclear factor erythroid 2 [NF-E2]-related factor 2) and its target enzymes and proteins that play an important role in cell protection from different damaging factors including UVB. Silencing …

The Making Of A Pathogen: Implications Of Phage Domestication In Acinetobacter Baumannii, Allison Welp Apr 2017

The Making Of A Pathogen: Implications Of Phage Domestication In Acinetobacter Baumannii, Allison Welp

Undergraduate Theses

Mutations and horizontal gene transfer have allowed for rapid evolution of many species of bacteria, allowing them to become more virulent and resistant to antibiotics. As a result of these changes, Acinetobacter baumannii has become one of the most prominent drug-resistant bacteria in hospitals. This nosocomial pathogen is capable of causing a range of infections—from pneumonia to sepsis—and is extremely difficult to eradicate from hospital settings. Despite its current status, this species has not always been apparent in healthcare. The emergence of this organism has been extremely rapid; once an innocuous environmental organism, A. baumannii is now resistant to all …

Analyzing Organizational Commitment And The Effect On Job Turnover In Nurse Residents, Cory D. Church

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an exploration of psychosocial concepts related to the experiences of a vital health human resource, newly licensed registered nurses. Newly licensed registered nurses are at risk for leaving their first job within the first year due to the difficulty of transitioning to practice. The pressure to gain competence and deliver quality care, all while navigating the workplace environment, can impact their commitment to an organization and the profession. The reader will notice these concepts threaded throughout the dissertation. While these concepts are explored in other nursing workforce populations, the researcher determined a gap in the research on …

Ultrasound Monitoring Of Extant Adnexal Masses In The Era Of Type 1 And Type 2 Ovarian Cancers: Lessons Learned From Ovarian Cancer Screening Trials, Eleanor L. Ormsby, Edward J. Pavlik, John P. Mcgahan Apr 2017

Ultrasound Monitoring Of Extant Adnexal Masses In The Era Of Type 1 And Type 2 Ovarian Cancers: Lessons Learned From Ovarian Cancer Screening Trials, Eleanor L. Ormsby, Edward J. Pavlik, John P. Mcgahan

Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Publications

Women that are positive for an ovarian abnormality in a clinical setting can have either a malignancy or a benign tumor with probability favoring the benign alternative. Accelerating the abnormality to surgery will result in a high number of unnecessary procedures that will place cost burdens on the individual and the health delivery system. Surveillance using serial ultrasonography is a reasonable alternative that can be used to discover if changes in the ovarian abnormality will occur that favor either a malignant or benign interpretation. Several ovarian cancer screening trials have had extensive experiences with changes in subclinical ovarian abnormalities in …
