The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

A cross-sectional study was designed and 3,872 blood samples were collected from apparently healthy sheep, goats and cows in Fars province, the south of Iran. The sera were screened for detection of bluetongue virus (BTV) antibodies using a commercially competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Overall prevalence rate of BTV antibodies among the domestic ruminants was 57.64% (70.93%, 55.70% and 19.77% for sheep, goat and cow, respectively). Associations between each independent variable, including ruminant type, age, sex, region, farming system and breed, and BTV infection were statistically significant (p<0.05). Females were 1.32 times more likely to exhibit seropositivity. Odds ratio for BTV infection was higher in older animals and traditional farming. The results revealed a wide spread of BTV infection in the domestic ruminants, especially in sheep and goat. Further studies of the distribution of Culicoides vectors in the region, virus isolation and genome sequencing of the isolated viruses are suggested.

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Camels still play an important role in providing food security in several developing countries, especially in the arid zones. As brucellosis has zoonotic importance, thereby diseased camels can infect humans chiefly via milk. In spite of its vital importance, limited studies are available of brucellosis in camels in Pakistan. Keeping in view the fact, this study was designed and executed. For this purpose, serum samples (n=761) from various herds of camel with history of abortion from different locations of Punjab province, Pakistan were collected. Initial screening was done using Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT). To avoid improper judgment of the …

E-Cigarettes: A Hazy Hazard, Cheryl (Cheri) L. Marcham, John (Jack) P. Springston

Publications

• Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or e-cigs) are battery-powered devices that deliver vaporized nicotine and other substances, such as flavorings, to users without smoke or combustion. They are commonly marketed as smoking cessation tools and, as such, are promoted as being a healthier alternative to smoking.

• A common misperception is that that e-cigarettes only release water vapor. In reality, though, these devices release nicotine and other chemicals in a vapor form that can expose both the user (a.k.a., the vaper), as well as those in the immediate vicinity, to those contaminants. While the health risks of e-cigarettes compared to regular …

An Isogenic Stem Cell Model Of Alzheimer's Disease: Direct Expression Of Amyloid-Beta, Teresa Marie Ubina

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), identified over 100 years ago and intensively studied since the 1970s, has no effective treatments or mechanistic understanding of the underlying neurodegenerative process. Most investigators believe accumulation or aggregation of amyloid beta (Ab) proteins plays a causative role. Aβ peptides (~39-43 residues) are generated by proteolysis of the transmembrane protein APP. One reason we know so little about AD is an incomplete understanding of the cellular mechanisms responsible for Ab proteotoxicity. Human ES and iPSC models of AD are recent additions to many other models used to investigate these mechanisms. AD, however is a chronic progressive condition …

Could Titin Have A Role In Strain-Induced Injuries?, Craig Perrin, Kazunori Nosaka, James Steele

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

It has been known for some time that strain injuries occur through the excessive lengthening of a muscle. However, the precise mechanism for strain injury remains elusive and has been the subject of recent debate in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, but it seems sensible to consider mechanisms at the level of the muscle fiber. It was previously believed that damage was the result of non-uniform stretching of sarcomeres on the descending limb of the length–tension curve, with the weakest sarcomeres undergoing the greatest deformation and ultimately damaging the myofibril. This non-uniform lengthening was also believed to …

Ampt, Collins Mudogo, Peter Gichangi, Megan S. C. Lim, Griffins Manguro, Matthew Chersich, Walter Jaoko, Marleen Temmerman, Marilyn Laini, Stanley Luchters

Population Health, East Africa

Introduction New interventions are required to reduce unintended pregnancies among female sex workers (FSWs) in low- and middle-income countries and to improve their nutritional health. Given sex workers’ high mobile phone usage, repeated exposure to short messaging service (SMS) messages could address individual and interpersonal barriers to contraceptive uptake and better nutrition.

Methods In this two-arm cluster randomised trial, each arm constitutes an equal-attention control group for the other. SMS messages were developed systematically, participatory and theory-driven and cover either sexual and reproductive health (WHISPER) or nutrition (SHOUT). Messages are sent to participants 2–3 times/week for 12 months and include …

Innovative Running Related Researches, Li Li

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

There was a surge in published research related to barefoot running in the past 2 decades, and especially in the past 5 years. For example, the number of returns for “barefoot running” in Google Scholar increased dramatically relative to the search returns for “running” (Fig. 1). “Running” related returns started at about 220,000 in 1997 and peaked at about 376,000 in 2007 (a 0.7 times increase) and gradually decreased to less than 70,000 in 2016. In contrast, “barefoot running” related returns started at 945 in 1997 and peaked at 5010 in 2012 (a 4.3 times increase). Between 2007 and 2012, …

Parallel And Cross-Sectional Hamstring Injuries In Sprint Running, Li Li, Donghai Wang Jun 2017

Parallel And Cross-Sectional Hamstring Injuries In Sprint Running, Li Li, Donghai Wang

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

This issue of Journal of Sport and Health Science contains a point-counterpoint discussion of hamstring injuries in sprint running by the groups of Drs. Liu and Yu.1–4 They propose different mechanisms of muscle injuries in general, and hamstring injuries in sprint running specifically. Yu et al.2,4 present evidence suggesting that hamstring injuries are primarily caused by excessive muscle strain during eccentric contraction. In maximal effort sprint running, excessive muscle strains occur at the end of the swing phase. In contrast, Liu et al.1,3 point out that, in addition to excessive hamstring strain, high stresses in the late …

Although diverse tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) are endemic to East Africa, with recognized impact on human and livestock health, their diversity and specific interactions with tick and vertebrate host species remain poorly understood in the region. In particular, the role of reptiles in TBP epidemiology remains unknown, despite having been implicated with TBPs of livestock among exported tortoises and lizards. Understanding TBP ecologies, and the potential role of common reptiles, is critical for the development of targeted transmission control strategies for these neglected tropical disease agents. During the wet months (April-May; October-December) of 2012-2013, we surveyed TBP diversity among 4,126 ticks …

(Re)Defining Race: Addressing The Consequences Of The Law's Failure To Define Race, Destiny Peery

Cardozo Law Review

Modern lawmakers and courts have consistently avoided discussing how to define race for legal purposes even in areas of law tasked regularly with making decisions that require them. This failure to define what race is in legal contexts specifically requiring such determinations, and in the law more broadly, creates problems for multiple actors in the legal system, from plaintiffs deciding whether to pursue claims of discrimination, lawyers deciding how to argue cases, and legal decision-makers deciding cases where race is not only relevant but often central to the legal question at hand. This Article considers the hesitance to engage with …

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome, whose criteria are risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of NAFLD, its association with subclinical atherosclerosis, and factors that may account for this association in Mexican Americans. In a population based cross-sectional sample drawn from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort in Texas, carotid intima media thickness (cIMT), an indicator of subclinical atherosclerosis, was measured. Abnormal carotid ultrasound study was defined as mean cIMT >75th percentile for age and gender and/or plaque presence. NAFLD was defined as steatosis by ultrasound in …
