The Lived Experience Of Retention And Progression Of Black/African American Nursing Students, India Mylon Medley Jun 2017

The Lived Experience Of Retention And Progression Of Black/African American Nursing Students, India Mylon Medley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Despite recent strides to increase workforce diversity, nurses continue to inadequately reflect the ethnic composition of the population they serve. To effectively answer the national calls for increased diversity in the nursing workforce, there must be a greater representation of minority students studying nursing. However, minority nursing students, especially those of Black/African American descent, have less access to nursing education, poorer retention and progression rates in nursing programs, and are more likely to withdraw from programs. The existence of an increasingly diverse nursing workforce depends upon the recruitment, retention, progression, and graduation of minority students. Whereas Historically Black Colleges and …

Prenatal Undernutrition, Metyrapone, And The Cerebrovasculature, Lara Durrant Jun 2017

Prenatal Undernutrition, Metyrapone, And The Cerebrovasculature, Lara Durrant

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The link between intrauterine environmental conditions and adult cardiovascular system is well established. Independent of lifestyle factors such as poor diet and exercise habits, individuals who have been exposed to stressful conditions in utero show an increased risk of health problems such as hypertension, stroke, and type II diabetes. In support of the Fetal Origin of Adult Disease hypothesis, many labs have reported permanent anatomical and physiological changes associated with fetal stress and nutrient deficiency, with a focus on organ systems such as the kidney and heart. One key idea proposed by many of these studies is the glucocorticoid hypothesis, …

Targeting Ledgf/P75 To Sensitize Chemoresistant Prostate Cancer Cells To Taxanes, Leslimar Rios-Colón Jun 2017

Targeting Ledgf/P75 To Sensitize Chemoresistant Prostate Cancer Cells To Taxanes, Leslimar Rios-Colón

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most diagnosed cancer in males. This disease disproportionately affects African American men, with a higher incidence and mortality compared to other ethnic/racial groups. An aging male population and the complexity of addressing the health disparities associated with this disease puts PCa into the spotlight due to its serious public health implications and the imminent fiscal challenge over the next decades. Chronic prostate inflammation resulting in activation of stress and prosurvival pathways contribute to disease progression and the development of chemoresistance. Lens epithelium-derived growth factor p75 (LEDGF/p75) is a stressresponse protein that promotes cellular survival …

Pas Signaling Mechanisms In Aer And Aer2, Darysbel Garcia Jun 2017

Pas Signaling Mechanisms In Aer And Aer2, Darysbel Garcia

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

PAS domains are widespread signal sensors that share a conserved three-dimensional αβ fold that consists of a central β-sheet flanked by several α- helices. The aerotaxis receptor Aer from Escherichia coli and the Aer2 chemoreceptor from Pseudomonas aeruginosa both contain PAS domains. Aer senses oxygen (O2) indirectly via an FAD cofactor bound to its PAS domain, while Aer2 directly binds O2 to its PAS b-type heme cofactor. The Aer and Aer2 PAS domains both interact with a signal transduction domain known as a HAMP domain. The PAS-HAMP arrangement differs between Aer and Aer2, with Aer- PAS residing adjacent to its …

Ultra-Filtration Of Human Serum For Improved Quantitative Analysis Of Low Molecular Weight Biomarkers Using Atr-Ir Spectroscopy, Franck Bonnier, Luis Felipe Cs. Carvalho, Matthew J. Baker, Hugh Byrne, Igor Chourpa

Articles

Infrared spectroscopy is a reliable, rapid and cost effective characterisation technique, delivering a molecular finger print of the sample. It is expected that its sensitivity would enable detection of small chemical variations in biological samples associated with disease. ATR-IR is particularly suitable for liquid sample analysis and, although air drying is commonly performed before data collection, just a drop of human serum is enough for screening and early diagnosis. However, the dynamic range of constituent biochemical concentrations in the serum composition remains a limiting factor to the reliability of the technique. Using glucose as a model spike in human serum, …

White Blood Cell Subtypes Are Associated With A Greater Long-Term Risk Of Death After Acute Myocardial Infarction, Arthur Shiyovich, Harel Gilutz, Ygal Plakht

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

We evaluated the association between white blood cell counts and long-term mortality rates in 2,129 patients (mean age, 65.3 ± 13.5 yr; 69% men) who had survived acute myocardial infarction. We obtained white blood cell counts and differential counts of white blood cell subtypes within the first 72 hours of hospital admission. The primary outcome was all-cause death at 1, 5, and 10 years after acute myocardial infarction.

In regard to death in the long term, we found significant negative linear associations (lymphocytes), positive linear associations (neutrophils and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio), and nonlinear U-shaped associations (basophils, eosinophils, monocytes, and total …

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Importance: Bathing suit ichthyosis (BSI) is a rare congenital disorder of keratinization characterized by restriction of scale to sites of relatively higher temperature such as the trunk, with cooler areas remaining unaffected. Fewer than 40 cases have been reported in the literature. Bathing suit ichthyosis is caused by recessive, temperature-sensitive mutations in the transglutaminase-1 gene (TGM1). Clear genotype-phenotype correlations have been difficult to establish because several of the same TGM1 mutations have been reported in BSI and other forms of congenital ichthyosis. We identify novel and recurrent mutations in 16 participants with BSI.

Objective: To expand the genotypic spectrum of …

NYMC Faculty Publications

In vivo induction of AmpC beta-lactamases produces high-level resistance to many beta-lactam antibiotics in Enterobacteriaceae, often resulting in the need to use carbapenems or cefepime (FEP). The clinical effectiveness of piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP), a weak inducer of AmpC beta-lactamases, is poorly understood. Here, we conducted a case-control study of adult inpatients with bloodstream infections (BSIs) due to Enterobacter, Serratia, or Citrobacter species from 2009 to 2015 to assess outcomes following treatment with TZP compared to FEP or meropenem (MEM). We collected clinical data and screened all isolates for the presence of ampC alleles by PCR. Primary study outcomes were 30-day mortality …

Comparative In Vitro Killing Activities Of Enrofloxacin When Used Alone And In Combination With Doxycycline Against E. Coli Isolates From Dogs And Cats, Supapatt Kireewan, Nipattra Suanpairintr

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Enrofloxacin (ENR) exhibits bactericidal activity while doxycycline (DOX), a drug of choice for Ehrlichia canis (E. canis), demonstrates bacteriostatic effect. When Gram-negative bacteria and E. canis co-infection occurs, using enrofloxacin concurrently with doxycycline is inevitable. The objectives of this study were to compare in vitro killing activities and killing times of enrofloxacin when used alone with those of its combination with doxycycline against ten Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates from dogs and cats using time-kill curves. The combination treatment was administered either simultaneously (ENR+DOX at t=0 hr) or separately (DOX at t=0 followed by ENR at t=12 hr). The best …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

In the present study the effect of antimicrobial peptide K9CATH was evaluated in a murine model of mastitis by Staphylococcus aureus. Mastitis was induced with a clinical isolate of S. aureus in 20 female Balb/c mice at 7 to 10 days of lactation. Ten mice (treatment group) received daily intramammary infusions of 32 μg/50 μL K9CATH peptide, for 3 consecutive days, and 10 other mice (control group) received only 50 μL of saline solution. Results showed a significant reduction (P<0.01) in S. aureus CFU counts in the treatment group compared to the control group. These data suggest that the K9CATH peptide could be a potential candidate for the treatment of bovine mastitis.

Background

The lipidome is rapidly garnering interest in the field of psychiatry. Recent studies have implicated lipidomic changes across numerous psychiatric disorders. In particular there is growing evidence that the concentrations of several classes of lipids are altered in those diagnosed with MDD. However, for lipidomic abnormalities to be considered potential treatment targets for MDD (rather than secondary manifestations of the disease), a shared etiology between lipid concentrations and MDD should be demonstrated.

Methods

In a sample of 567 individuals from 37 extended pedigrees (average size 13.57 people, range = 3–80), we used mass-spectrometry lipidomic measures to evaluate the genetic …
