The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The present study was conducted to synchronize estrus and fixed time insemination in dairy cattle during the hot and humid months (July to November) in Thailand. Thirty-four cows and heifers were treated by using norgestomet+PGF2α+equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) program. Norgestomet was implanted subcutaneously at the back of the ear for 10 days. PGF2α was administered IM on day 8 and one injection of eCG was given on the day of implant removal. Fixed time artificial insemination(AI) were performed twice, at about 54-60 and 70-74 h, after the eCG injection. Blood samples were collected at 22 days after AI for progesterone …

Known Facts About The Epidemiology Of Porcine Proliferative Enteropathy, Roberto M. C. Guedes Jun 2008

Known Facts About The Epidemiology Of Porcine Proliferative Enteropathy, Roberto M. C. Guedes

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The amount of new information of the last seven years regarding Lawsonia intracellularis sensitivity to antimicrobial drugs, prevention/control based on treatment and vaccination, diagnosis and, finally, genome is amazing. Nevertheless, not much is known about the epidemiology of the disease, mainly regarding the source of infection, resistance of the bacteria in the environment and possible biological vectors that could spread the infection among farms. It was learned that as few as 1,000 to 10,000 bacteria are enough to induce infection and fecal shedding two to three weeks after inoculating susceptible pigs. It was also learned that L. intracellularis organisms can …

The Microscopic And Molecular Detections Of Canine Ehrlichiosis, Orapin Ariyawutthiphan, Kaj Shokshai-Utsaha, Thanida Sananmuang, Sudchit Chungpivat, Meena Sarikaputi, Nareerat Viseshakul

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The applications of molecular detection using nested PCR and the routine microscopic examination of ehrlichiosis were applied to 43 clinically affected dogs residing in Bangkok and Samutraprakarn. This study, performed in 2005-2006, has determined that 79.5% (31/39) of the buffy coat smears were having the ehrlichial morulae plus initial bodies found in monocytes and lymphocytes. The nested PCR was used to confirm the occurrence of ehrlichiosis after tested by morulae identification. Both tests demonstrated that neither Ehrlichia chaffeensis nor E. ewingii, the zoonotic agents of human, were found in this area. However, the prevalence of E. canis alone detected by …

Estrogen And Progesterone Induce Persistent Increases In P53-Dependent Apoptosis And Suppress Mammary Tumors In Balb/C-Trp53+/- Mice, Karen Dunphy, Anneke C. Blackburn, Haoheng Yan, Lauren R. O'Connell, D Joseph Jerry May 2008

Estrogen And Progesterone Induce Persistent Increases In P53-Dependent Apoptosis And Suppress Mammary Tumors In Balb/C-Trp53+/- Mice, Karen Dunphy, Anneke C. Blackburn, Haoheng Yan, Lauren R. O'Connell, D Joseph Jerry

Karen Dunphy

Introduction Treatment with estrogen and progesterone (E+P) mimics the protective effect of parity on mammary tumors in rodents and depends upon the activity of p53. The following experiments tested whether exogenous E+P primes p53 to be more responsive to DNA damage and whether these pathways confer resistance to mammary tumors in a mouse model of Li-Fraumeni syndrome. Methods Mice that differ in p53 status (Trp53+/+, Trp53+/-, Trp53-/-) were treated with E+P for 14 days and then were tested for p53-dependent responses to ionizing radiation. Responses were also examined in parous and age-matched virgins. The effects of hormonal exposures on tumor …

Transmission Of Panulirus Argus Virus 1 (Pav1) And Its Effect On The Survival Of Juvenile Caribbean Spiny Lobster, Mark J. Butler Iv, Donald C. Behringer Jr., Jeffrey D. Shields

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The Caribbean spiny lobster Panulirus argus, an important fisheries species, is host to Panulirus argus virus 1 (PaV1), a lethal, unclassified virus-the first found in any species of lobster-prevalent in juvenile lobsters. We describe a series of laboratory experiments aimed at assessing the likely modes of disease transmission, determining the survival of lobsters relative to each transmission pathway and identifying potential alternate hosts. Given evidence for lower prevalence of PaV1 in large lobsters, the effect of lobster size on susceptibility was also examined. Results demonstrated that PaV1 can be transmitted to juvenile lobsters via inoculation, ingestion of diseased tissue, contact …

Antibiotic-Mediated Inhibition Of Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus (Prrsv) Infection: A Novel Quinolone Function Which Potentiates The Antiviral Cytokine Response In Marc-145 Cells And Pig Macrophages, William A. Cafruny, Richard G. Duman, Raymond R. Rowland, Eric A. Nelson, Grace H. Wong

Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an economically significant agent for which there currently are no effective treatments. Development of antiviral agents for PRRSV as well as many other viruses has been limited by toxicity of known antiviral compounds. In contrast, antibiotics for non-virus microbial infections have been widely useful, in part because of their acceptable toxicity in animals. We report here the discovery that the quinolone containing compound Plasmocin™, as well as the quinolones nalidixic acid and ciprofl oxacin, have potent anti-PRRSV activity in vitro. PRRSV replication was inhibited by these antibiotics in both cultured MARC-145 cells …

Reorganisation Of Cell Cytoskeleton Of Cat Oocytes Matured In Vitro, Theerawat Tharasanit, Mongkol Techakumphu, Chainarong Lohachit

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Developmental capacity of domestic cat oocyte matured in vitro is poor when compared to that of in vivo matured oocyte. While cytoplasmic maturation of the oocytes is essentially required for embryo development, little is really known about distribution of cell components during the course of in vitro maturation (IVM). The aims of this study were to examine and to describe the changes in the distribution of microtubule and actin microfilaments in relation to stage of nuclear maturation during IVM. Cumulus oocyte complexes were matured in vitro for 0, 6, 12, 18 and 24 h and then labeled with immunofluorescent dyes …

Histological Changes In The Epithelium Of Thai Swamp Buffalo Oviduct At Follicular And Luteal Phases, Paisan Tienthai, Kriengyot Sajjarengpong, Mongkol Techakumphu

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The samples from the infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus and uterotubal junction (UTJ) of the Thai swamp buffalo oviduct were taken immediately after slaughter at the local abattoir. The histological changes of the epithelium including general characteristics, intensity of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining, cell height and immune cell distribution were investigated by light microscopy. The degree of the histological and morphometric changes was shown to be high in the ampulla and infundibulum compared with that of the isthmus and UTJ at both follicular and luteal phases of the estrous cycle. In the infundibulum and ampulla, cytoplasmic protrusions of the epithelial cells with …

The Safety Evaluation Of Permethrin On Dogs When Used In A Prophylactic Dose For Ectoparasite Infection, By Measuring Serum Cholinesterase Activity, Piyarat Chansiripornchai, Pakkawan Satranarakun, Mallavee Kanoksopit, Yuthana Nisakulrat

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The safety of permethrin at a prophylactic dose for ectoparasite infection in dogs was evaluated by the measurement of cholinesterase activity (ChE). On day 0, eight healthy dogs were exposed to spot - on formulation of permethrin. The results of serum ChE activity in all the dogs which measured on day 1 and 4 after exposure to permethrin showed no significant different comparing to those before exposure. There were no clinical signs in all dogs throughout the experiment. The result suggests that using spot-on formulation of permethrin at a prophylactic dose for ectoparasite infection is safe in dogs.

Genetic Characterization Of Feline Leukemia Virus From Florida Panthers, Meredith Brown, Mark W. Cunningham, Alfred L. Roca, Jennifer L. Troyer, Warren E. Johnson, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

From 2002 through 2005, an outbreak of feline leukemia virus (FeLV) occurred in Florida panthers (Puma concolor coryi). Clinical signs included lymphadenopathy, anemia, septicemia, and weight loss; 5 panthers died. Not associated with FeLV outcome were the genetic heritage of the panthers (pure Florida vs. Texas/Florida crosses) and co-infection with feline immunodeficiency virus. Genetic analysis of panther FeLV, designated FeLV-Pco, determined that the outbreak likely came from 1 cross-species transmission from a domestic cat. The FeLV-Pco virus was closely related to the domestic cat exogenous FeLV-A subgroup in lacking recombinant segments derived from endogenous FeLV. FeLV-Pco sequences were …

Biology Faculty Articles

Background

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) naturally infects multiple species of cat and is related to human immunodeficiency virus in humans. FIV infection causes AIDS-like disease and mortality in the domestic cat (Felis catus) and serves as a natural model for HIV infection in humans. In African lions (Panthera leo) and other exotic felid species, disease etiology introduced by FIV infection are less clear, but recent studies indicate that FIV causes moderate to severe CD4 depletion.

Results

In this study, comparative genomic methods are used to evaluate the full proviral genome of two geographically distinct FIV subtypes …

Brown Dog Tick: Vector For Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Craig Levy Feb 2008

Brown Dog Tick: Vector For Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Craig Levy

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae), feeds primarily on dogs and until recently was not known to vector Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). In 2003–2004, fourteen cases of RMSF in humans occurred in eastern Arizona in the absence of known vectors, the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, and American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis. However, health officials found brown dog ticks to be very abundant in areas associated with human cases, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) implicated that the brown dog tick was responsible for transmitting RMSF. Brown dog ticks occur throughout the United …
