Lupinus montanus subsp. montanus var. montanus Kunth is a widespread taxon occurring throughout the highlands of Central Mexico and Guatemala. Populations of this variety show little variation in plant morphology, but their highly disjunct island-like distribution suggests that genetic differentiation between populations should be expected. To test this idea, we assessed genetic diversity among 13 populations of Lupinus montanus var. montanus growing on the 6 main volcanoes of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB) using 4 intersimple sequence repeat markers to quantify genetic divergence. Qtl Mapping Of Some Productivity And Fibre Traits In Gossypium Arboreum, Tayyaba Shaheen, Yusuf Zafar, Mehboob-Ur Rahman

This study explains the construction of an intraspecific genetic linkage map of the A-genome diploid cotton with simple sequence repeat (SSR) and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, using 180 F_2 plants derived from the cross of 2 Gossypium arboreum cotton cultivars (Ravi × Entry-17). Polymorphisms between the 2 parents were detected using 1089 pairs of SSR primers and 520 RAPD primers. In total, 34 pairs of SSR primer-amplified and 18 RAPD primer-amplified polymorphic loci were selected to survey the F2 population. In total, 52 polymorphic DNA fragments were generated and used to construct a linkage map with JoinMap 3.0. …

Astragalus Yukselii (Leguminosae), A New Species From Turkey, Seher Karaman Erkul, Zeki̇ Aytaç
Turkish Journal of Botany
Astragalus yukselii Karaman & Aytaç (Leguminosae) is described as a new species and illustrated. The species is distributed near the town of Hadim in Konya Province (South Anatolia). Diagnostic morphological characters useful in discriminating the new species from its close relatives, A. isauricus Hub.-Mor. & V.A.Matthews and A. karjaginii (Boriss.) Boriss., are explained. Both species clearly belong to Astragalus L. sect. Macrophyllium Boiss., which is characterised by large leaves and flowers. We also present some notes on the ecology, biogeography, and conservation status of the new species.

Oils are atypical floral rewards in Orchidaceae and are produced by epidermal glands called elaiophores. Flowers of many members of the subtribe Oncidiinae either produce oil or mimic oil-producing flowers of Malpighiaceae. We focus our research on 3 species of Gomesa, namely, G. flexuosa, G. riograndensis, and G. varicosa in order to investigate the presence of elaiophores, their micromorphology and internal structure, and the process of oil secretion. This study was performed in order to determine toxic effects of different doses of Attribut (propoxycarbazone-sodium) used in wheat fields and BioPower (sodium alkyl ether sulphate) surfactant added to Attribut on Triticum aestivum L. Pehlivan. The doses used in the study were 0.42 mM Attribut, 0.82 mM Attribut, and 1.68 mM Attribut with or without 0.25% BioPower. Laboratory studies showed that the effective concentration value corresponded to the farmer dose, 0.42 mM Attribut. Applications were done by seed treatment. Cadmium is one of the most toxic heavy metals and affects all viable cells, even at low concentrations. It is introduced to agricultural soils mainly by phosphate fertilisers and causes many toxic symptoms in cells. Phytochelatins (PCs) are heavy metal-binding peptides that play an important role in sequestration and detoxification of heavy metals in plants. Results about a phylogenetic analysis of the genus Onobrychis Mill., tribe Hedysareae DC. are presented. The systematic knowledge of tribe Hedysareae is still incomplete, with difficult circumscription of genera and species. Analyses were undertaken using both nuclear (ITS) and chloroplast (matK) markers for a set of 78 accessions covering 41 Onobrychis species, besides previously sequenced Hedysareae accessions. The phylogenetic methods used were maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian analyses to produce phylogenetic trees and robustness indices. Leaf characteristics provide many useful clues for taxonomy. We used a back-propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) and C-support vector machines (C-SVMs) to classify 47 species from 3 sections of genus Camellia (16 from sect. Chrysanthae, 16 from sect. Tuberculata, and 15 from sect. Paracamellia). The classification model was constructed based on 7 leaf anatomy attributes including, area of adaxial epidermal cell, thickness of adaxial epidermal cell, thickness of palisade parenchyma, thickness of total leaf, thickness of spongy parenchyma, thickness of abaxial epidermal cell, and area of abaxial epidermal cell. The effects of excess and deficient boron and niacin on vascular tissues of carrot roots (Daucus carota L. cv. Nantes) were investigated in plants grown in medium both rich and poor in boron and also boron with niacin. Five media were investigated: control (MS medium), boron-deficient MS medium, MS medium with excess boron, niacin-deficient MS medium, MS medium with niacin excess, and MS medium with excess boron and niacin. A floristic study of the Yıldız Mountains Biosphere Project was undertaken between May and October 2009. The project area is located in the north-eastern part of European Turkey, within flora square A1-A2 (E) (Kırklareli), and covers about 1300 km^2. The list of vascular plants was prepared mainly based on specimens collected during the flora surveys of the Project and supplemented by earlier gathered specimens kept in the EDTU, ISTE, and ISTO herbaria. In the project area 1315 taxa, belonging to 505 genera and 113 families, were determined. Among these, 18 taxa are Pteridophytes, 4 Gymnospermae, 1035 Dicotyledones, and 258 Monocotyledones. …

Fungal specimens were collected in Trabzon Province in 2010 and 2012. Taxonomical studies were performed in our laboratory and in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. According to the results, Entoloma noordeloosi Hauskn., Inocybe lutescens Velen., and Tricholoma saponaceum var. squamosum (Cooke) Rea are recorded for the first time for the Turkish Mycota. The new records are illustrated, briefly described, and discussed.

Seed micromorphology of 20 species of Minuartia L. (Caryophyllaceae) that represent 2 different subgenera (i.e. Minuartia subgen. Spergella (Fenzl) McNeill and Minuartia subgen. Minuartia) were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Some qualitative and quantitative characters such as seed length and width, seed shape, cell shape, and cell ornamentations were studied. The results showed that seed micromorphology might provide useful tools in recognition and separation of Minuartia hamata (Hausskn.) Mattf. from other species of sect. Minuartia. Two new records of Orobanche L. have been added to the 37 species of this genus previously reported from Turkey. Orobanche owerini (Beck) Beck is reported as a new record to flora of Turkey for the first time, and the existence of O. reticulata Wall. that was mentioned as a doubtful record for Turkey has been confirmed. Macro- and micromorphology of the taxa are discussed, geographical distributions in Turkey are mapped, and details of their habitat, ecology, and taxonomic remarks of the studied taxa are provided.

Seed coat morphology of 15 species of Ipomoea L. was examined comparatively using scanning and light microscopy methods in order to evaluate their diagnostic value for systematic studies. Macro- and micromorphological characters, including seed shape, colour, size, seed surface, epidermal cell shape, anticlinal boundaries, and periclinal cell wall are presented. Descriptions of seed size, shape, colour, surface, and seed coat types are summarised for the genus. Taxonomic phylogenetic implications of the seed coat micromorphology are also discussed in comparison with the available gross morphological and molecular data. Cistanche phelypaea (L.) Cout. (Orobancaceae) was found parasitising the roots of the succulent shrublets Arthrocnemum macrostachyum (Moric.) K.Koch (Chenopodiaceae) in a coastal salt marsh in Qatar. Measurements were conducted to identify soil properties, host, and noninfected plants by soil excavations to expose the haustoria of the parasite attached to the host roots. The water potential, osmotic potential, pressure potential, and chemical analyses were determined in parasite, host, and noninfected plants. Historically, the Kentucky Inner Bluegrass blue ash-oak savanna-woodland was the primary ecosystem of the Inner Bluegrass Region (IBR) of Kentucky. After European settlement, the majority (>99%) of Bluegrass savanna was converted to agricultural and urban land uses. Currently remnant savanna tree species are failing to recruit. Therefore, a long-term restoration ecology project researching competition and disturbance on seedling establishment, survival, and growth has been established at Griffith Woods (the largest remaining savanna in Kentucky) in Harrison Co., KY. A taxonomic review of the New Caledonian representatives of the pantropical tree genus Xylopia L. (Annonaceae) is presented based on museum study of 157 collections. Distinctions are clarified among the four endemic species, two of them previously undescribed in flower and two others described in the literature from only the type collections. A key and species descriptions are presented. Xylopia pancheri Baill., the most frequently collected species, occurs in maquis environments with ultramafic rocks in the central and southern regions of the island, as well as on the Ile des Pins. Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV), an economically important virus infecting wheat in the Great Plains region of the USA, is the type species of the Poacevirus genus in the family Potyviridae. Sensitive and high-throughput serology-based detection methods are crucial for the management of TriMV and germplasm screening in wheat breeding programs. In this study, TriMV coat protein (CP) was expressed in Escherichia coli, and polyclonal antibodies were generated against purified soluble native form recombinant CP (rCP) in rabbits. Water capture and precipitation use efficiency are of great importance in dryland cropping systems because the world's dependence on food produced in dryland areas continues to increase. Growing season evapotranspiration potential greatly exceeds growing season precipitation rates in dryland areas, creating a water deficit for crops. Management practices that positively impact soil physical properties increase the potential for soils to capture water. Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in grain plays a major role in time-dependent discoloration of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) products, especially fresh noodles. Breeding wheat cultivars with low or nil PPO activity can reduce undesirable product darkening. The low PPO line PI 117635 was crossed to two low PPO wheats, IDO580 and ‘IDO377s’, to determine whether matings between wheats with low levels of grain PPO would result in complementation, such that lines with still lower or nil PPO would be generated. A fundamental need for commercialization of sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] as a bioenergy crop is an adequate seed supply, which will require development of hybrid varieties using dwarf seed-parent lines. A set of six public sweet sorghum A-lines (Dwarf Kansas Sourless, KS9, N36, N38, N39, and N4692) were crossed with a set of six public sweet sorghum cultivars (Brawley, Kansas Collier, Dale, Sugar Drip, Waconia, and Wray). Background: Lignin is a significant barrier in the conversion of plant biomass to bioethanol. Cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) and caffeic acid O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyze key steps in the pathway of lignin monomer biosynthesis. Brown midrib mutants in Zea mays and Sorghum bicolor with impaired CAD or COMT activity have attracted considerable agronomic interest for their altered lignin composition and improved digestibility. Here, we identified and functionally characterized candidate genes encoding CAD and COMT enzymes in the grass model species Brachypodium distachyon with the aim of improving crops for efficient biofuel production.

Background: Buffalograss [Buchloë dactyloides (Nutt.) Engel. syn. Bouteloua dactyloides (Nutt.) Columbus] is a United States native turfgrass species that requires less irrigation, fungicides and pesticides compared to more commonly used turfgrass species. In areas where water is limited, interest in this grass species for lawns is increasing. While several buffalograss cultivars have been developed through buffalograss breeding, the timeframe for new cultivar development is long and is limited by a lack of useful genetic resources. Two high throughput next-generation sequencing techniques were used to increase the genomic resources available for buffalograss.

Background: Plastid genome structure and content is remarkably conserved in land plants. This widespread conservation has facilitated taxon-rich phylogenetic analyses that have resolved organismal relationships among many land plant groups. However, the relationships among major fern lineages, especially the placement of Equisetales, remain enigmatic.
Results: In order to understand the evolution of plastid genomes and to establish phylogenetic relationships among ferns, we sequenced the plastid genomes from three early diverging species: Equisetum hyemale (Equisetales), Ophioglossum californicum (Ophioglossales), and Psilotum nudum (Psilotales). Background: Attractive toxic sugar bait (ATSB) sprayed onto vegetation has been successful in controlling Anopheles mosquitoes outdoors. Indoor application of ATSB has yet to be explored. The purpose of this study was to determine whether ATSB stations positioned indoors have the potential to kill host-seeking mosquitoes and constitute a new approach to control of mosquito-borne diseases.
Methods: Insecticides were mixed with dyed sugar solution and tested as toxic baits against Anopheles arabiensis, An. Aims — Decreased expression of TaNAM genes by RNAi results in delayed senescence and decreased grain protein, iron, and zinc concentrations. Here, we determined whether NAM expression level alters onset of senescence under stress conditions, whether delayed senescence in the TaNAM-RNAi line resulted in improved tolerance to post-anthesis abiotic stress, and determined the effects of post-anthesis abiotic stress on N and mineral remobilization and partitioning to grain.

Demand for soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] meal has increased worldwide and soybean importers often offer premiums for soybean containing higher contents of protein and oil. Objectives were to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with soybean seed protein, oil, and seed weight in a soybean mapping population and confirm detected QTL across genetic backgrounds and environments. Two populations of 216 and 156 recombinant inbred lines were developed from Magellan × PI 438489B and Magellan × PI 567516C crosses, respectively, and grown in two Missouri environments in 2008.
