Reducing Food Scarcity: The Benefits Of Urban Farming, S.A. Claudell, Emilio Mejia

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Urban farming can enhance the lives of communities and help reduce food scarcity. This paper presents a conceptual prototype of an efficient urban farming community that can be scaled for a single apartment building or an entire community across all global geoeconomics regions, including densely populated cities and rural, developing towns and communities. When deployed in coordination with smart crop choices, local farm support, and efficient transportation then the result isn’t just sustainability, but also increasing fresh produce accessibility, optimizing nutritional value, eliminating the use of ‘forever chemicals’, reducing transportation costs, and fostering global environmental benefits.

Interannual climate variability impacts forage yield in semiarid rangelands, but it also affects the timing of peak yields. Knowledge of peak standing crop or yield dates would be useful when planning fieldwork for various research or management activities and for developing more accurate models linking herbage production to climatic variables. In this study, herbaceous yield was measured every 2 weeks (April–August) over an 8-year period in a Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis) community in southeastern Oregon. Invasion by nonnative annual plants that form prolific seed banks, including Bromus tectorum L. (cheatgrass), throughout western North America is a major natural resource concern. Even with known economic and ecological implications, soil seed banks and their potential to impact ecological restoration in arid and semiarid ecosystems are poorly understood. Quantifying the regenerative potential of the soil seed bank—the living seeds in the soil profile and on the soil surface—can help natural resource managers make decisions to increase the likelihood of restoration success. Insights On The Distribution Of Struthanthus Palmeri Kuijt (Loranthaceae), The Northernmost Species Of The Genus, Mónica I. Miguel-Vázquez, Yasser S. López De Olmos-Reyes, Maria Guadalupe Maldonado-Borja, Rosa Cerros-Tlatilpa

Western North American Naturalist

Struthanthus (Loranthaceae) is native to the Americas, and several species occur in Mexico, some of which are endemic, such as S. palmeri. Within the genus, S. palmeri has the northernmost distribution, inhabiting the arid environments of northwestern Mexico near the border with the United States. In this study, the known distribution of the species was updated. The elevation, hosts, and vegetation types where S. palmeri occurs were compiled to infer its potential distribution, using ecological niche modeling. Conservation of rare plants is dependent on identifying mechanisms that limit their population or persistence. Successful pollination of flowers is one life history trait that is often limiting in plants occurring in fragmented landscapes. We studied pollinator associates and seed production in Astragalus packardiae (= A. cusickii var. packardiae, Packard’s milkvetch), a narrow endemic that is imperiled as a result of nonnative annual grasses, increased wildfire, recreational off-highway vehicle use, and livestock use. Acarosporaceae Of New Mexico: Eight New Species Of Acarospora And Sarcogyne, Kerry Knudsen, Jana Kocourková, Eva Hodková, Jiří Malíček, Yan Wang

Eight new species are described from the Chihuahuan Desert in southern New Mexico: Acarospora agos­tiniana, A. divisa, A. fissurata, A. ryanii, Sarcogyne brouardiana, S. coeruleonigricans, S. malpaiensis, and S. nogalensis. Three species, Acarospora coloradiana, A. peltastica, and A. utahensis are not treated as synonyms of A. strigata, a South American endemic. Thirty-four species of Acarosporaceae are reported from the Chihuahuan Desert in southern New Mexico. Fifty-six species of Acarosporaceae are reported from New Mexico. It is estimated that 416 species of described Acarosporales occur worldwide, most in need of revisions. …

Mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, 1902; MPB) has been causing limber pine (Pinus flexilis E. James) mortality at Great Basin National Park, Nevada, including at Wheeler Peak Campground, for many years. Research has shown that MPB voltinism and phenology are strongly influenced by climate and can vary by location and elevation, indicating the need for localized observations to inform treatment recommendations in some cases. We used emergence cages on infested tree boles, baited Lindgren funnel traps, and ambient air temperatures to describe MPB adult flight timing over 2 years. Astragalus amnis-amissi (Fabaceae), or Lost River milkvetch, is a plant endemic to east-central Idaho for which no published surveys have been completed in the last 18 years. A search for several previously documented populations in canyons of the southern Lemhi Range and the Lost River Range, in Butte and Custer Counties, Idaho, documented the species in 4 canyons. However, it was not relocated in an unnamed canyon in the southern Lemhi Range, indicating potential extirpation of 1 of 2 previously known populations documented on land managed by the USDI Bureau of Land Management. Telesonix jamesii, a rare and imperiled species of perennial saxifrage, is restricted to rocky habitats at high elevations across 21 isolated, known populations in the southern Rocky Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico. Despite its imperiled conservation status, very little is known about the natural history of T. jamesii. We studied pollination of this species during the summers of 2019–2021 at multiple locations on Pikes Peak, Colorado. We conducted a total of 899 min of pollinator surveys, identifying all floral visitors during this time period. We then examined floral visitors for the presence of T. jamesii pollen to …

Invasive species can cause drastic changes to plant communities. In many cases, removal of invasive species fails to reverse these changes, perhaps due to side effects of removal strategies, changes that co-occurred with invasion, or legacy effects. Carpobrotus edulis is a notorious invasive species in Mediterranean-type climates around the world that alters plant communities and may generate legacy effects. We investigate the impact of C. edulis invasion, removal, and potential legacy effects on coastal plant communities. We assessed community composition, species richness, diversity, and native and exotic species cover at 5 sites differing in C. edulis invasion and removal history. …

This research project studied the germination and growth rates of oat and quinoa crops in Mtalimanja, Malawi. This project was part of a larger effort by General Mills and Brigham Young University researchers to increase the diversity and nutrient content of crops in impoverished countries worldwide. It was conducted from May to August 2017 during Malawi’s dry season. Tetraploid oats and quinoa, both modified to increase the protein content of harvested grains, were planted under three different soil conditions: unamended soil, soil mixed with composted chicken litter, and soil with surface-applied granular fertilizer. Humans have always had an intimate and complex relationship with plants. Plants provide many of the basic necessities for survival, such as food, clothing, and shelter. Plants also play an important and rich part in human culture. This fascination with plants has led to detailed studies of their natural history as well as explorations into their unique and useful properties. Throughout recorded history, philosophers, herbalists, botanists, and others have captured their observations about plants. In the northern U.S. Rockies, including the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), connectivity is a concern because large carnivores have difficulties dispersing successfully between protected areas. One area of high conservation value because of its importance for connecting the GYE to wilderness areas of central Idaho is the Centennial Mountains and surrounding valleys (2500 km2) along the Idaho–Montana border just west of Yellowstone National Park. This paper provides an overview of botanical investigations in southeastern Utah, but is not so-restricted geographically. It grew out of the discovery of decades-old manuscripts on the flora of what became Canyonlands National Park in 1964, but from those typescript copies the coverage grew outward geographically and backward in time to the earliest inhabitants of what is today known as the Four Corners Region of the American Southwest. Abstract

This book details the author’s trips to Death Valley, along with general ecological information about the region. Explorations by other natural historians are also recounted. Death Valley and its surrounding mountain ranges are stark and appear to lack vegetative cover, but that appearance is deceiving. The ranges and valley support a great diversity of living things, both plants and animals. Pages 10–17 contain photographs of various landscapes. Pages 18–20 list the plant species collected in Death Valley, 1970–1983. Voucher specimens are available for study at Stanley L. Welsh Herbarium, Brigham Young University.

This short work is derived from a manuscript prepared for presentation in a water adjudication hearing, following a proposal to pipe water from wells in Beaver Dam Wash for transfer across state lines to be used for culinary and other purposes in Mesquite, Nevada. The Wash is estimated to yield 2000 acre feet of water annually, mostly as subsurface flow, at the Arizona line. About a third of that amount is already appropriated by users along the Wash in Utah, but there are applications pending for more than 100,000 acre feet in Utah. All North American species of the chenopodiaceous genus Atriplex known to occur, either through introductions or as indigenous plants, are treated in this paper.
