Gladiolus Osmaniyensis (Iridaceae), A New Species From South Anatolia, Turkey, Mehmet Sağiroğlu, Gençay Akgül

Turkish Journal of Botany

A new species, Gladiolus osmaniyensis Sağıroğlu (Iridaceae), is described and illustrated from South Anatolia, Turkey. G. osmaniyensis is morphologically close to G. attilae and G. atroviolaceus. The ecology and phenology of the new species as well as its etymology, conservation status, and diagnostic morphological features are discussed. In addition, the seed surfaces of the G. osmaniyensis, G. attilae, and G. atroviolaceus are examined by SEM. The geographical distribution of the new species and the morphologically related species are mapped as well.

The morphology, histochemistry, and ultrastructure of foliar mucilage-producing trichomes of Harpagophytum procumbens are investigated using a combination of light and electron microscopy. The leaves of H. procumbens bear short and long glandular trichomes comprising 1 or 2 basal epidermal cells, a stalk of 1-3 cells, a short neck cell, and a head of 2-5 cells. These trichomes are distributed on both leaf sides with a greater abundance on the abaxial side. Both types of trichomes secrete copious amounts of secretion as droplets onto the leaf surface, and the release occurs through micropores in the head cuticles. The secreted material is …

Most of the species from the genus Centaurium Hill readily hybridize between themselves in natural habitats. Artificial interspecific hybrid plants were obtained under in vitro conditions using reciprocal crosses between 4 species: Centaurium erythraea, C. littorale, C. maritimum, and C. pulchellum. Among 76 crossing experiments performed, 3 types of crosses produced seeds and gave 20 interspecific hybrid plants. Nuclear DNA quantification, fingerprinting of molecular markers, and determination of variation in main secondary metabolite content were employed to confirm their hybrid nature. Antioxidant enzyme mechanisms are important for protecting crop productivity against stressful environmental conditions. Therefore, the current study was designed to evaluate lipid peroxidation (via malondialdehyde (MDA)) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD) gene expression profiles, and SOD enzyme activities in tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum L.) plants subjected to different concentrations (100 and 150 mM) and time periods of NaCl and polyethylene glycol (PEG) stress (3 h, 6 h, 9 h, 12 h, and 48 h). The effects of salinity on growth, osmotic adjustment, and antioxidative responses were evaluated in Apera intermedia. For this purpose, 30-day-old plants were irrigated every other day with Hoagland nutrient solution containing 0, 150, 300, or 600 mM NaCl for 7 and 14 days. The results showed inhibition of growth, relative growth rate, relative water content, and osmotic potential with increasing NaCl concentration. Increased Na^+, Cl^-, and Na^{+}/K^+ ratio and decreased K^+ and Ca^{2+} were determined with increasing NaCl concentrations. The response of chlorophyll fluorescence, photosynthetic CO_2 assimilation (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), electrolyte leakage, and transpiration (E) was observed in Jatropha curcas seedlings subjected to soil flooding. A strong reduction in growth, leaf-area expansion (64%), and stomatal conductance (45%) impaired photosynthetic CO_2 assimilation (66%), which eventually reduced biomass yield. The ratio between variable-to-initial chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fo) and the maximum quantum yield efficiency of the photosystem II (Fv/Fm) was used to explore damage associated with the functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus. Flora inhabiting gypsum outcrops in arid environments shows a high level of specialization. However, the processes involved are still unclear, specifically at the key stage of germination. Here, to assess whether gypsum could chemically influence seed germination, we tested the germination of species according to 3 functional groups: gypsophiles, gypsovags, and calcicoles. A total of 24 taxa were selected, all occurring in gypsum and limestone substrates, under a semiarid and dry Mediterranean climate. The aim of this research is to test the Q phytoplankton assemblage index based on phytoplankton functional groups in Lake Mogan and to provide a quality state estimation by data from 2006. Phytoplankton was sampled at 2 stations of the lake, paralleled with physical (water temperature, Secchi depth, pH, conductivity) and chemical (DO, chlorophyll-\alpha, alkalinity, total hardness, soluble reactive phosphorus, total phosphorus, NO_{2}-N, NO_{3}-N, NH_{3}-N) analyses. Onopordum hasankeyfense Pınar & Behçet (Asteraceae: Cardueae) from south-eastern Anatolia, Turkey, is described. This species grows on the rocky slopes beneath the Hasankeyf castle in the Hasankeyf District (C8, Batman province). Morphologically, the new species is related to Onopordum anatolicum (Boiss.) Boiss. & Heldr. ex Eig, a species endemic to central and western Anatolia, and O. acanthium L. This new species differs from the others in its indumentum, capitulum shape, phyllary colour and shape, unequal corolla lobes, and pappus. Study On Seed Morphometry Of Some Threatened Western Himalayan Orchids, Jagdeep Verma, Kusum Sharma, Kranti Thakur, Jaspreet Kaur Sembi, Suraj Prakash Vij

Physical seed characteristics of 32 threatened Western Himalayan orchids belonging to 23 genera of 3 subfamilies were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. The species showed remarkable seed shape variations (fusiform, spathulate, ovoid, filiform) irrespective of their taxonomic position. Epiphytes produced relatively small-sized seeds compared to their terrestrial, lithophytic, or mycoheterotrophic counterparts. Seeds were truncated (length/width < 6.0) in 27 species, and were mostly elongated (length/width = 19.957 ± 1.459) in the orchidoid species Goodyera biflora (Lindl.) Hook.f. The number or size of testa cells was found fairly consistent at the genus level, and their walls were straight, sinuous, or undulate. Periclinal walls possessed vertical or oblique ornamentation in 6 species, which is of taxonomic implication. Embryos were rather tiny and most of the seed space (even >90% in 7 species) was occupied by air. The highest seed to embryo volume ratio was recorded in terrestrial Liparis odorata (Willd.) Lindl. and the lowest in epiphytic Rhynchostylis retusa (L.) Blume, both of which are members of the advanced Epidendroideae. Seed characteristics …

Toxicological Evaluation Of Polar And Nonpolar Components Of Isodon Coetsa (Lamiaceae), Sandhya Vincent Neelamkavil, John Ernest Thoppil

Isodon coetsa (Buch.-Ham. ex D.Don) Kudo, a perennial herb used in traditional Chinese folk medicines as an antibacterial, antiinflammatory, and antitumour agent, was subjected to toxicity analysis. Cytotoxic screening using the Allium L. assay was done with extracts containing polar and nonpolar compounds as well as with polar compounds alone. Root tips were treated with different concentrations of both the extracts, 0.005%, 0.01%, 0.05%, and 0.1%, for varying time durations (30 min, 1 h, 2 h, and 3 h). Extremely significant levels of chromosome abnormality (P < 0.001) were observed with the extracts when compared with the positive control (0.01% methyl parathion), but the extract with polar and nonpolar compounds showed higher abnormality percentage. Not much variation was observed in the mitotic index when compared to the negative control (distilled water). Studies revealed many clastogenic and nonclastogenic abnormalities. The major abnormalities included chromosome fragments, stickiness, ring chromosomes, chromosome bridges, pulverization, binucleate cell, micronucleus, ball metaphase, chromosome laggards, and shift in microtubule organizing center. The results showed that the nonpolar components possessed more clastogenic activity, which can be specifically targeted in order to destroy cancer cells. The toxic activity of extracts also suggests the need of judicious use of I. coetsa in folk medicines.

Salinity is one of the most common environmental stresses affecting grapevine productivity. In order to analyze the contribution of the dehydration-responsive RD22 gene of Vitis vinifera L. (VvRD22) to salt tolerance improvement, Agrobacterium-mediated transformation in the tobacco model plant (Nicotiana benthamiana) was carried out and transgenic lines were subjected to in vitro and ex vitro salt treatments for physiological response evaluation. Anagyris foetida L. has a Mediterranean distribution, but its populations are highly fragmented. This, together with its mixed mating system, puts it at clear risk of being strongly affected by inbreeding depression. To determine the effect of inbreeding depression in this species, hand pollinations were performed during the 2003/04 season in 2 populations from SW Spain to generate selfed and outcrossed seeds. In the present work, Ramalina pollinaria (Westr.) Ach. specimens collected from around an iron steel factory in Karabük were analyzed due to their heavy metal accumulation by atomic absorption spectrometry. The specimens were also evaluated for pollution-induced DNA damage by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay. Genomic template stabilities were calculated from the changes in RAPD profiles and compared with heavy metal content in R. pollinaria. The results obtained from chemical analysis suggest that R. pollinaria is a particularly suitable lichen species for the detection of air quality. Two chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) lines (AKN 87 and AKN 290) that have different chilling susceptibilities were exposed to 2 chilling temperatures (4 and 2 °C), either cold-acclimated (10 °C) or nonacclimated (25 °C), in order to understand and compare physiological and biochemical changes at the vegetative stage. Chilling temperatures resulted in reduced growth parameters, particularly in cold-acclimated lines, whereas nonacclimated plants exhibited the lowest water contents. Cold acclimation treatment led to protective changes of increased flavonoid, proline, and antioxidant enzyme activities, mostly superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX), in the lines. Despite xeric conditions, Pistacia atlantica Desf. subsp. atlantica (Atlas pistachio) succeeds in developing impressive dendrometric dimensions (25-m high, 2-m trunk diameter). It is among the rare spontaneous phanerophytes of the North African steppe. With access to water being the primary condition for survival, we focused on its root system. According to a gradient of increasing climatic and edaphic aridity in Algeria, we recorded different root architectures set up by this tree. Arenaria microcalyx M.Koç & Hamzaoğlu (Caryophyllaceae) is described as a new species of subgen. Arenaria L. in Turkey. The specimens were collected from Kaş (Antalya). The new species is related to Arenaria leptoclados (Rchb.) Guss. and is an endemic species that has a distribution in the Mediterranean region. The differences between the species are discussed. Description, distribution, illustration, and conservation status of the new species are given. Seeds structures were examined by scanning electron microscopy.

Onobrychis alamutensis Amirah., Kaz. Osaloo & Charkhch. is described as a new species. It is restricted to the northwestern Alborz mountain range in Rudbar-Alamut, Qazvin, Iran. The diagnostic characters and relevant description of the species are given. The new species is distinguished from its closely related taxa, Onobrychis verae Sirj., O. ptychophylla Sirj. & Rech.f., and O. sosnowskyi Grossh. in both morphological and molecular evidence (nrDNA ITS sequences). The distribution map and an illustration of the new species are also provided.

Seasonal variations in the composition and abundance of phytoplankton were investigated fortnightly at 3 different regions along the Mandovi estuary from June 2007 to May 2008 in relation to salinity and nutrients. A total of 209 species belonging to 7 divisions were identified during the study period. Herniaria caucasica Rupr., Rumex cyprius Murb., and Potentilla multifida L. are given as new records for Turkey. The specimens were collected from Van, Mersin, and Kayseri provinces. These new records were compared with similar species in Turkey. Descriptions, distributions, and figures of these new records are given.

Ellenberg developed a system that assigns indicator scores for habitat characteristics of individual plant species. Swamp forests are highly diverse ecological communities and include different plant species, all of which have different ecological requirements. Ellenberg's indicator values (EIVs) were calculated for soil pH and nitrogen (N) concentration in some swamp forest species in the Central Black Sea region of Turkey. In this study, the EIVs for soil pH were usually similar in the swamp forest species studied, while some differences were found with respect to EIVs for soil nitrogen concentration. To investigate the effect of exogenous application of triacontanol (TRIA) on 2 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars (S-24 and MH-97) under salt stress, an experiment was conducted in a greenhouse under natural climatic conditions. Both cultivars were grown in full strength Hoagland's nutrient solution under nonsaline (0 mM NaCl) or saline (150 mM NaCl) conditions in sand culture. Three optimized TRIA levels (0, 10, and 20 µM) were used as foliar spray at 3 growth stages, i.e. vegetative, boot, and vegetative + boot stages. A new natural hybrid between Prosthechea cochleata and P. radiata (Orchidaceae, Laeliinae) from the central part of Guatemala, P. × chixoyensis Mó & Cetzal, is herein described, illustrated, and characterized based on the morphological characters. The new nothospecies is most similar to P. cochleata but the petals are proportionally broader and the mucro of the labellum is subapical, as observed in P. radiata. Tamarix L. accessions were collected from Sistan and Baluchestan Province of Iran, covering an area of about 60 km located in the southeast of Iran. The present investigation was performed to study the genetic structure of Tamarix populations in this province and present some information about gene flow among these populations. Forty-two tree specimens were randomly collected and studied for molecular and morphological diversity. Taxonomic relationships in Avena genus are not evident. Avena sativa L. might have originated either from Avena sterilis L. or Avena fatua L. Alternatively, it may have evolved independently during formation of the hexaploid form. A. fatua may have a different A genome than the other hexaploids. Studies performed with Ty1-copia retrotransposon probes demonstrated that this retrotransposon is present at low copy number in the C genome, while it is abundant in A, B, and D. Barbarea integrifolia DC. (Brassicaceae) is an endangered and endemic species located in Erzincan and Gümüşhane provinces of Turkey. In total, 27 individuals from 2 natural populations were assessed using the random amplified polymorphic DNA polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR) method coupled with sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1) rDNA region. Genetic accuracy of RAPD-PCR was tested with 25 RAPD primers, and it resulted in 115 clear and reproducible DNA fragments from 13 RAPD primers.
