Cette etude a eu pour objectif de comparer la composition et la digestibilite du trefle blanc a celles des deux principales gra-. minees fourrageres, le ray-grass anglais (RG) et le dactyle (D), utilisees dans l'Ouest de la France. En effet, ii est apparu interessant de preciser !'influence du trefle blanc (TB) sur la valeur alimentaire de son association avec ces graminees. Cette etude a ete effectuee simultanement sur des fourrages coupes distribues a des moutons en cage de digestibilite et sur des echantillons preleves a chaque cycle du paturage de jeunes bovins.

The prevailing approach for developing fodder base in the North-Western economic region of the USSR is grass feed production. So, choosing plants which should maximize the accumulation of solar energy and provide high yields of quality satisfying cattle requirements is of exclusive importance. Our many year studies of different perennial grasses showed that tall fescue is one of the best to use solar energy in the given conditions of environment. So the experiment was carried out in 1979-1986 with the aim of determining solar energy accumulation and energetic nutritive value of this crop at different cutting frequencies.

Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam. var. Italicum) is native to the Po valley. Persistent populations of this species represent the main grass component of the irrigated permanent meadows in this area (Rotili et al., 1985). The subspecies Italicum (biannual, non alternative) and Westerwoldicum (annual, alternative) are at present the most important cultivated grasses in Italy, and are grown either as component in the poliphytic meadows or as catch crop, followed by maize for silage or soybean. Extensive cow-calf grazing systems in the Eastern Plains of Colombia are characterized by the use of very limited areas of sown pastures, amounting to generally less than 5 % of the area (Kleiheisterkamp and Habich, 1985; Sere and Estrada, 1985). It has also been shown (Kleinheisterkamp and Habich, 1985) that management practices applied to the breeding herd are few and irregularly utilized. It is thus hypothesized that the transition of extensive cow-calf operations to more productive beef breeding systems will initially require the introduction of pastures with minimum management requirements that will allow a gradual evolution of existing grazing systems. …

Elephantgrass or napiergrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) is a long-lived, tall perennial warm-season bunch grass. Under subtropical conditions where cool season temperatures to not drop below - 4 °C, elephantgrass will normally out yield Saccharum spp. with less winter kill and greater persistence under annual harvesting. Alexander (1985) in Puerto Rico indicated elephantgrass out yielded energycane when cut at 6-mo intervals, but was inferior to sugarcane when cut once annually. The nutritive value for ruminants of lucerne forage may be characterized both by the In Vitro Digestibility of Dry Matter (IVDDM) and by the Nitrogen content (N % ) which determine the energy and nitrogen values. These two characteristics are linked to the Leaf/Stem ratio (L/S) (Demarquilly, 1966). But for the same L/S ratio, different IVDDM and N % can be obtained according to the biochemical composition of leaves and stems separately. The crop residues from sorghum and pearl millet represent an important potential feed resource. In 1981, 55.2 and 51.4 million tons of crop residues were produced from sorghum and pearl millet respectively (Kossila, 1985). Pearl millet is the most prevalent cereal in the Sahel and farmers usually leave millet stover in the field after grain harvest. Grazing livestock then walk through the fields and eat first the leaves and later the stalks. Farmers also use millet stalks as fuel, and for construction. Use of indigestible plant constituents as internal markers as opposed to fecal index methods and in vitro techniques, has the distinct advantage of measuring digestibility directly in vivo and in the pasture. Lignin and acid insoluble ash are the most frequently employed markers. Grass contaminated by soil renders the method using insoluble ash rather unreliable, while lignin as reported by Fahey and Jung (1983) also presents problems it is either partially digested or gives positive fecal recovery by binding of endogenous constituents of indeterminate nature. In the semi-arid clima\e of the Canadian Prairies most herbage production occurs in May and June whereas the grazing season lasts until October. Summer and fall pasture consists largely of mature, quiescent vegetation with senescent leaves and lignified stems. Floral tillers of some temperate grasses have a higher rate of leaf senescence than non-floral tillers (Bittman et al., 1988) and are rejected by grazing cattle. In Atlantic Canada, Phleum pratense L. is the predominant grass species grown for conserved feed and pasture. Although P. pratense is a persistent grass species under 2 cut systems (Kunelius and McRae, 1986) it does not perform adequately under intensive management. Animal production is not only affected by pasture mass and its seasonal distribution but also by the composition and quality of the consumed pasture (Rattray and Clark, 1984). Legumes have a higher nutritive value than grasses, but may be suppressed by application of artificial nitrogen (N) when soil N status is low (Ball and Field, 1982). Smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss.) often produces over 70 % of its annual growth during spring. Summer growth and forage quality are poor. Mefluidide suppresses seedstalk production and improves forage quality of many cool-season grasses (Sheaffer and Marten, 1986). The three fundamental environmental factors which influence plant growth are water, temperature, and light. Light may be separated into photoperiod - and irradiance - related factors. Grasses adapt to reduced irradiance regimes by increasing leaf area and stem length and by decreasing leaf thickness and plant dry weight. Leaf thickness in grasses is altered by changes in cell size (Cooper and Tainton, 1968). These morphological and anatomical adjustments to irradiance regime may affect cell-wall concentration and forage quality. Beside crude fibre and protein, the photosynthetic products - nonstructural carbohydrates - are further important substances of digestible dry matter in lucerne fodder. They participate in dry matter by 15 %. In contrast to crude fibre and protein, the content of photosynthates changes expressively during the day (Plhak, 1984). The changes reach in leaves by 20 %, in stems 5 % of dry matter. Previous research has shown that formulating rations based upon neutral detergent fiber (NDF) concentration of the total diet can be an effective means of maximizing the performance of lactating dairy cattle (Mertens, 1982). Rotational grazing with beef cattle is widely advocated and practised under commercial pastoralism in semi-arid grassland in southern Africa. Although sheep grazing dry subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) pasture may maintain body weight for the early part of summer, they usually lose weight during late summer and autumn, with consequent adverse effects on productivity (Purser, 1980). A decline in the digestibility of clover during plant senescence (Hume and Purser, 1975) is believed to be an important component of the reduced nutritive value of this dry feed. Livestock production in the tropics is highly dependent on forages to meet the nutritional requirements of grazing cattle. However, seasonal fluctuations on dry matter production and nutritive value are limiting factors affecting animal performance and production. Stargrass Cynodon nlemfuensis var. nlemfuensis is a highly productive grass recommended for intensive management in the humid tropics of Puerto Rico (Vicente-Chandler et al., 1974). Arable land often lies fallow for a time, which provides an opportunity for growing fodder catchcrops between two main crops. This practice should improve the soil structure, conserve soil moisture, eliminate many weeds, maximise land use and enable easier preparation for the subsequent main crop. Moreover, subsequent cereal yields may be increased by preceding forage legume crops (Papastylianou and Samios, 1987). The aim of present investigation was to determine the concentration of promising autumn cut catchcrops (D-value) and to assess the possibility of predicting the yield of digestible organic matter (DOM) from the yield of green or dry matter (DM).

Changes In Digestibility With Regrowth Of Some Temperate Grasses, K Watanabe, S Furukawa, A Sato, S Saiga

Many workers have reported that the decline in digestibility of temperate grasses were steep after heading in 1st cut and lenient during the regrowth in 2nd and 3rd cuts. But in some grasses, heading is observed even in 2nd and 3rd cuts, and the late stages of regrowth were sometimes accompanied by high temperature which usually accelerate the decline in digestibility. So even in the regrowth, digestibility is one of the important factors to optimize cutting stage of grasses. Even though Gliricidia sepium has been used as fodder in the tropics, the extend of its utilization by ruminant is not well documented (NFTA, 1987). When mixed with other forages, Gliricidia sepium consumption by Bali cattle can be as high as 50 % during the wet season and increases up to 66 % during the dry season (Nitis et al., 1988). Herbage intake is one of the critical factors in understanding why livestock perform at various levels on different forages, however acceptable methods of measuring voluntary intake of free-roaming livestock are still lacking. Commonly used indirect measurement methods estimate pasture herbage loss or animal gain, fecal output and digestibility equations, grazing behavior calculations or indicators (Greenlaugh, 1982). More direct attempts of measuring intake include the Animal Weight Telemetry System (AWATS) of Horn and Miller (1979), multiple impedance plethysmography (Stuth et al., 1981) and the conductivity transducing cannula (CTC: Forwood et al., 1985). The equine breeding industry of New Zealand makes a considerable contribution to the export earnings, but the production base of that industry, i.e. the equine pastures have been neglected by our researchers. Thoroughbred studs are established on ex-dairy or ex-sheep farms which are usually sown with perennial ryegrass and white clover. Ryegrass based pastures can be highly productive, but in New Zealand suffer from the Argentine stem weevil - ryegrass staggers dilemma. i.e. Low endophyte ryegrasses do not survive Argentine stem weevil, but resistant high-endophyte ryegrasses cause the animal muscular disorder« ryegrass staggers». Production by ruminants on high forage diets is often limited by intake. If fill limits intake, residue must escape the rumen through digestion or passage for further intake to occur. Resistance to escape of forage residues from the rumen is a function of physical and morphological characteristics of the forage, although the nature of the relationship is not fully understood (Moseley and Jones, 1984). Understanding of factors affecting passage of undigested residue is important to ensure maximum forage utilization in ruminant diets. Recent work has shown how herbage growth, ingestive behaviour and herbage intake may be related to sward height under continuous stocking (Parsons et al., 1986; Penning, 1986). However, the application of these relationships to other grazing managements, where differences in herbage mass, tiller number and leaf to stem ratio at the same sward heights occur, have not been considered. The objective of this study was to determine the major factors affecting ingestive behaviour and intake of herbage by sheep grazing swards differing in structure and morphology but with similar heights.
