Arkansas is the leading rice producer in the United States. The state represents 45.2% of total U.S. rice production and 45.7% of the total acres planted to rice in 2025. Rice cultural practices vary across the state and across the U.S. However, these practices are also dynamic and continue to evolve in response to changing political, environmental, and economic times. This survey was initiated in 2002 to monitor and record changes in the way Arkansas rice producers approach their livelihood. The survey was conducted by polling county extension agents in each of the counties in Arkansas that produce rice. Questions …

Planted cotton acreage in Arkansas decreased in 2025 to 520,000 acres compared to 650,000 planted acres in 2024. Arkansas producers harvested 515,000 acres, which was a decrease of 125,000 acres from the 640,000 acres harvested in 2024 (https://www.nass.usda.gov/Quick_Stats/Ag_Overview/stateOverview.php?state=Arkansas&year=2025). The 515,000 harvested acres ranked Arkansas third nationally, trailing only Texas and Georgia in harvested acres (https://esmis.nal.usda.gov/sites/default/release-files/795725/cropan26.pdf). The average cotton yield, as reported by the USDA, was 1,239 lb lint/ac, which ranked fourth nationally, behind California, Louisiana, and Arizona. Arkansas farmers produced an estimated 1.329 million bales, which is a decrease from 1.788 million bales produced in 2024. This production still ranks …

Nonpoint source pollution from agricultural landscapes contributes to freshwater eutrophication, with legacy phosphorus (P) in soils potentially driving soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) losses to surface waters. The objectives of this study were to evaluate SRP adsorption by dried water treatment residuals (WTRs) produced by Beaver Water District, quantify reductions in soil SRP release across increasing WTR application rates, and compare dried WTR performance to prior WTR studies.

Non-flow-through chamber systems collect large quantities of gas concentration data to determine the gas flux, but gas-flux-determination (GFD) methods can vary between regression models, how negative fluxes are considered, and what agroecosystem is evaluated, which makes selecting an analysis method complicated. Reduced tillage (RT) is a common conservation agriculture practice, generally regarded to be a valuable greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation approach through increasing soil carbon (C) stocks. However, direct GHG measurements from RT compared to conventional tillage (CT) treatments can vary greatly depending on site-specific soil properties and management practices. Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, continues to be a major challenge in soft red winter wheat (SRWW) production, especially in the southern United States. In this area, mild winters and wet springs frequently lead to early and severe disease outbreaks. Although many lines demonstrate resistance in a single season, that resistance often does not last across multiple years. For breeding programs, this variability makes it hard to identify truly reliable lines. Many opportunities are known to use organic production methods or incorporate native warm-season grasses (NWSG) to accomplish both production goals and environmental or social outcomes. Environmental concerns have led some practitioners to question the use of organic methods to establish NWSG. Hybrid rice adoption in the southern United States, especially Arkansas, requires thermo-sensitive genic male sterile (TGMS) lines that combine stable sterility with glabrous foliage and grain quality preferred in U.S. markets. Over seven years (2014–2021), three TGMS lines—UAS3023, UAS20, and UAS4208—were developed through integration of marker-assisted and field-based selection targeting blast resistance (Pi-ta, Pi-b), semi-dwarf stature (sd1), amylose content, and gelatinization temperature. UAS3023 and UAS20 expressed ≥ 99% sterility at ~ 29 °C, while UAS4208 was sterile at ~ 32 °C, thresholds consistent with controlled-environment studies. Frass-the main by-product of insect rearing for animal feed-is emerging as a promising soil amendment and plant growth promoter. However, basic agronomic information is lacking and prevents frass' widespread use as a biofertilizer. This study assessed impacts of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens L. [Diptera: Stratiomyidae]) frass on soil fertility, crop growth, and quality compared to poultry litter (PL). Irrigated and non-irrigated soybean (Glycine max L. Cover cropping is an important management practice that can benefit the cash crop and the environment. Plant species, weather, and cover crop termination influence biomass production and N fixation potential. Climate change is altering precipitation patterns worldwide, yielding changes in streamflow and water availability. Increases in storm frequency and intensity, as well as prolonged droughts, may alter the timing and magnitude of flow and nutrient delivery to downstream systems, many of which serve as key drinking water resources. Thus, we must understand long-term changes in streamflow to protect drinking water supplies. Hyperspectral sensors are increasingly used to develop optimized vegetation indices (VIs) that capture plant spectral response to specific stressors. The project goal was to develop quantitative metrics for characterization of weed response to herbicide application. This work applied hyperspectral sensing to describe and predict the spectral response of common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L., CHEAL) to glyphosate application. Thirteen treatments, including one glyphosate rate used alone or in combination with eleven adjuvants plus one non- treated control, were applied to CHEAL seedlings cultivated in a greenhouse. Identifying the conditions where cover crops will succeed or fail is crucial for advancing conservation agriculture. Cover crops have been widely accepted as a conservation practice that can improve soil health and might improve or stabilize crop yields, though these benefits are not consistent across different regions. This study examines how heterogeneous factors can shape the effectiveness of cover crops on corn and soybean yields across the United States. Using the National Commodity Crop Productivity Index (Index) to measure soil productivity, this study examines how cover crop impacts vary across different levels of soil quality. Biochar is a relatively new, potential climate-mitigation strategy, but biochar still requires investigation regarding biochar's ability to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Little research has been conducted to quantify the impacts of biochar on GHG production from upland (i.e., furrow-irrigated) rice (Oryza sativa) production systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of wood biochar type (powder and coarse particle size) and application rate (0, 2.5, and 5 Mg ha-1) on GHG emissions in greenhouse-grown, simulated furrow-irrigated rice grown in a silt-loam soil. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions evaluations from agroecosystems are critical, particularly as technology improves. Consistent GHG measurement methods are essential to the evaluation of GHG emissions. The objective of the study was to evaluate potential differences in gas-flux-determination (GFD) options and carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes and growing-season-long emissions estimates from furrow-irrigated cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in southeast Arkansas. One climate-change mitigation pathway is soil carbon (C) sequestration. Native prairies have long been known for their soil C sequestration abilities, but the full extent of their sequestration capacity is not completely understood, particularly across diverse regions. This study evaluated the effects of soil depth and soil map unit-prairie combination on changes in various soil properties from 2018 to 2022 in the top 20 cm of two native tallgrass prairies in west-central Arkansas. Planted cotton acreage in Arkansas increased in 2024 to 670,000 planted acres, which was 160,000 acres more than in 2023 when Arkansas producers planted approximately 510,000 acres of cotton. A wet spring, and two hurricanes in three weeks in late summer/early fall led to a slight decrease in harvested acres that culminated in a final number of 640,000 (https://www.nass.usda.gov/Quick_Stats/Ag_Overview/stateOverview.php?state=ARKANSAS). Producers harvested 640,00 acres of cotton, which ranked third nationally, behind Texas and Georgia (https://downloads.usda.library.cornell.edu/usda-esmis/files/k3569432s/nk324887m/qn59s0097/cropan25.pdf).
