The Effects Of Moulting On Muscle Fibre Characteristics Of The Yabby, Cherax Albidus, Tina Marie Lamey Jan 1999

The Effects Of Moulting On Muscle Fibre Characteristics Of The Yabby, Cherax Albidus, Tina Marie Lamey

Theses : Honours

In order to grow, crustaceans must shed their exoskeleton in a process known as "moulting'. Although this process is short and intermittent, it remains dominant over the life of a crustacean. Physiological changes in the period between moults (intermoult) are comparatively quiescent as opposed to the periods directly before and after the actual moult, known as premoult, and postmoult respectively (West, 1997). Moulting is associated with distinct physiological changes including the breakdown of muscle (Musgrove and Geddes, 1985). This muscle breakdown, known as atrophy is the diminution in size of the actual muscle mass and is very specific, occurring to …

The Female Adolescent Knee, Patti J. Seely Oct 1998

The Female Adolescent Knee, Patti J. Seely

Dissertations and Theses

Many lower extremity anomalies are linked to an increased incidence of knee pain. A relationship between increased sports participation and knee pain has also been hypothesized. This study examined the relationship between lower extremity anomalies and the level of sports participation to knee pain. Fifty middle and high school female students completed a questionnaire to determine level of sports participation and the presence of knee pain/pathology. Measurements were made of Q angle, iliotibial band flexibility, knee hyperextension, hamstring flexibility, patella alta and calcaneal position. All variables were quantified and correlation coefficients were calculated. Stepwise multiple regression was used to evaluate …

Whole Body I=In Vivo Vascular Compliance In Two Amphibians, Bufo Marinus And Rana Cate, Todd Micheal Hoagland Oct 1997

Whole Body I=In Vivo Vascular Compliance In Two Amphibians, Bufo Marinus And Rana Cate, Todd Micheal Hoagland

Dissertations and Theses

The mean circulatory filling pressure (MCFP), vascular compliance (C) and unstressed volume (USV) were measured in Bufo marinus and Rana catesbeiana, using an in vivo preparation. Capacitance curves were constructed by varying total vascular volume and then measuring MCFP. These capacitance curves enable the extrapolation of USV and the measurement of vascular compliance. The MCFP, C, and USV were 8.6 ± 0.2 (mmHg), 3.7 (ml· mmHg-1 · kg- 1 ) and 2.5 (ml), respectively, in B. marinus. The MCFP, C, and USV were 9.5 ± 0.1 (mmHg), 2.2 (ml· mmHg-1 · kg- 1 ) and 14.2 (ml), respectively, …

Ultrasound Three- Dimensional Velocity Measurements By Feature Tracking, Gregory R. Bashford, Olaf T. Von Ramm May 1996

Ultrasound Three- Dimensional Velocity Measurements By Feature Tracking, Gregory R. Bashford, Olaf T. Von Ramm

Biomedical Imaging and Biosignal Analysis Laboratory

This article describes a new angle-independent method suitable for three-dimensional (3-D) blood flow velocity measurement that tracks features of the ultrasonic speckle produced by a pulse echo system. In this method, a feature is identified and followed over time to detect motion. Other blood flow velocity measurement methods typically estimate velocity using one- (1-D) or two-dimensional (2-D) spatial and time information. Speckle decorrelation due to motion in the elevation dimension may hinder this estimate of the true 3-D blood flow velocity vector. Feature tracking is a 3-D method with the ability to measure the true blood velocity vector rather than …

F Response Frequency For The Median And Ulnar Nerves In A Normal Population, Patricia J. Killea Aug 1992

F Response Frequency For The Median And Ulnar Nerves In A Normal Population, Patricia J. Killea

Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The F wave or F response results form the recurrent discharge of antidromically activated anterior horn cells. F response latency represents an impulse which travels to and from the spinal cord through the central segment of a nerve. Study of the F wave is commonly done to assess proximal conduction in motor nerves, to measure motor nerve conduction velocity over a longer pathway than in orthodromic motor studies, and to assess motor neuron excitability. F response characteristics less commonly studied include duration, chronodispersion, shape, amplitude, and frequency. The primary purpose of this study was to determine F response frequencies of …

Critical Flicker Frequency In A Harp Seal, Pagophilus Groenlandicus (Erxleben, 1777), Charles D. Bernholz Jan 1973

Critical Flicker Frequency In A Harp Seal, Pagophilus Groenlandicus (Erxleben, 1777), Charles D. Bernholz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Critical flicker frequency (CFF) in a free-swimming harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus) was investigated using behavioral techniques. The resulting CFF versus intensity contour indicates a definite rod-cone break, confirming a duplex photoreceptor population whose presence had not been observed in previous morphological reports.

The Spleen With Special Reference To Its Origin And Comparative Morphology, Morris Aaron Gilbert Jan 1931

The Spleen With Special Reference To Its Origin And Comparative Morphology, Morris Aaron Gilbert

Bachelors’ Theses

Throughout the ages the spleen has been an object of the most active curiosity. The opinion that the spleen is unnecessary and of no use to the individual has prevailed with an uninterrupted succession in the World in all ages. In Persia, man centuries ago, in the reign of Abouserous it was a custom to splenectomize the horses that were kept to carry the King's dispatches, in order to give them more agility and swifter feet. The great Aristotle thought the spleen to be a sort of spurious liver planted in the left side to correspond to the liver in …

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Physiology As Determined Mainly From Splenectomy, Frank X. Schuler Jan 1931

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Physiology As Determined Mainly From Splenectomy, Frank X. Schuler

Bachelors’ Theses

The spleen is essentially a vertebrate organ and its steady persistence throughout the group is an indication of its importance. Comparative study shows that it has certain common structural features , which may be counted fundamental or essential. In some animals, for example, in mammals, there are found additional structures, notably lymphoid tissue and splenic muscle often regarded as secondary acquisitions.
