Current global statistics estimate that 44.4 million people are afflicted with dementia, and that 50%-75% of these patients suffer from Alzheimer’s disease (AD; Prince et al. 2013). AD, a progressive disorder categorized by neuronal and behavioral deterioration, is the 6th leading cause of death in America (Alz facts and figure 2012). One hallmark pathology of AD is the presence of amyloid-beta (Aβ) in the brain, which can limit cell-to-cell communication, leading to cognitive deficits, and neuronal cell death. Although the exact origins of this disease still remain unknown, one possible catalyst of AD pathology is inflammation. Our lab has …

Hippotherapy utilizes the rhythmic movement of the horse to improve functional abilities and quality of life of individuals with neurological impairments. Little is known regarding the changes in body segment kinematics and cardiovascular responses of the rider due to the therapy. A change in the magnitude of pelvic displacement (PD) may allow those who use the therapy to more easily perform activities of daily living. Also, reduced cardiovascular stress to similar physical activities may be an important, but overlooked, therapeutic benefit of hippotherapy. The purpose of this study was to characterize PD and cardiorespiratory (CR) responses to simulated horseback riding …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Introduction. Strenuous aerobic exercise is known to disrupt innate immune function for up to 24-h, resulting in a period of time where individuals are more likely to get sick; granulocytes play a key role in this innate immune response. Recently our laboratory validated a new, image-based method of simultaneously assessing granulocyte phagocytosis and oxidative burst to divide granulocytes into high-, moderate-, and low-active phenotypes. The purpose of the present study was to use image-based flow cytometry method to assess the effect of strenuous aerobic exercise on the change in granulocyte activation phenotype. Methods. After providing their informed consent, subjects were …

VAAM has been shown to enhance lipolysis in rat adipocytes and is purported to improve endurance performance via enhanced fat metabolism. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects VAAM on cycling performance during a 20k time trial. 10 trained, male cyclists …
Cerebral Vasomotor Reactivity: Impact Of Hyperventilation Induced Hypocapnia On Hypercapnia Induced Vasodilation, Kevin M. Christmas
Cerebral Vasomotor Reactivity: Impact Of Hyperventilation Induced Hypocapnia On Hypercapnia Induced Vasodilation, Kevin M. Christmas
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cerebral vasomotor reactivity (CVMR; the relationship of cerebral blood flow responses to changes in arterial carbon dioxide (PCO2)) is used to assess cerebral vascular function. CVMR is generally assessed during either steady-state or transient breathe-by-breathe changes in PCO2. In the transient method, a brief period of hyperventilation hypocapnia is often followed by hypercapnic rebreathing to induce a wide range of change in PCO2 to assess the capacity of CVMR. Assessment of CVMR during transient changes in PCO2 has been reported to be about 30% lower than that under steady-state conditions. One possibility for this discrepancy is that cerebral vasoconstriction during …

Cognitive function testing during changes in body core temperature has been widely studied in regards to human performance, often employing passive hyperthermia. More recently, executive function (EF) testing during exercise has been addressed to assess changes in performance with some level of active hyperthermia. The purpose of the present study was to employ both external thermal stress and active hyperthermia in order to assess changes in executive function (EF) tasks within varying environmental temperatures before, during, and after a maximal treadmill test. Nine apparently healthy college-aged males participated in two trials of a Bruce protocol treadmill test in hot (35°C) …

Validity Of A Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire For Adults With Intellectual Disability, Brooke Marie Bouza
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Nutrition professionals consider individuals with intellectual disabilities to be nutritionally vulnerable or at risk for becoming overweight or obese. Presently there is limited empirical evidence regarding the nutritional habits and education of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Currently the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes program has become the largest global public health organization dedicated to serving people with intellectual disabilities. In 2012, Special Olympics Texas provided nearly 1,600 health screenings to athletes. The screenings provide surveillance information for public health organizations in the use of health planning, prevention, and promotion. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of a …

Isokinetic Fatigue Characteristics For The Leg Extensors Versus Flexors, Elias M. Carrillo, Matt S. Stock, Jacob Adam Mota, Kendra D. Olinghouse, Alexander S. Drusch, Brennan J. Thompson
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Maximal isokinetic muscle actions are often used in research studies to examine fatigability and even estimate muscle fiber-type. However, the majority of previous investigations have examined these topics for the leg extensors (i.e., quadriceps), and we are unaware of investigations that have specifically assessed the fatigue characteristics for the flexors (i.e., hamstrings). The purpose of this study was to compare the percent decline values for the leg extensors versus flexors for 50 and 100 repeated, maximal concentric isokinetic muscle actions. Fifteen healthy men (mean ± SD age = 23 ± 3 years; body mass = 94.1 ± 11.9 kg) with …

Self-Determined Engagement In Physical Activity And Sedentary Behaviors Of Us College Students, Ale Quartiroli, Hotaka Maeda
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 7(1) : 87-97, 2014. Although the importance of promoting physical activity is well established, researchers have recently considered “sedentary behaviors” as another key risk factor for chronic disease. However, little is known about the motivational processes regulating sedentary behavior on a daily basis. A substantial amount of research has been based on the self-determination theory to examine the motivational processes regulating physical activity behaviors. However, only limited attention has been paid to sedentary behaviors from this theoretical perspective. This study aims to identify and understand motivational aspects related to sedentary behavior from a self-determination perspective. A …
