Lumpy wool, or mycotic dermatitis, is an infectious disease on the skin of the sheep caused by the bacterium Dermatophilus conglensis. The organism invades the wool and hair follicles, causing formation of skin lesions producing scabby material which binds the wool fibres into a hard mass.
Research shows that 'dipping' may increase the incidence of lumpy wool with some chemicals a greater risk than others.

The screening of pesticides to determine which were most inhibitory to bacteria was accomplished by testing the effects of 10 pesticides on 9 different organisms using the disk assay method. Results showed that Gram positive bacteria were more sensitive to all pesticides tested than were the Gram negative bacteria. In addition, the hormone herbicides were found to be the most inhibitory to these bacteria and 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), a hormone herbicide, was chosen for subsequent in vivo studies.

This study is the summation of the aerobic findings of a five-year longitudinal study designed to catalogue and define the "normal" flora of a conditioned baboon. Also, for comparison and evaluation, the findings of baboons captured and sampled in the "wild" in 1968 or shipped to the SFRE facilities during 1965 or from August of 1968 to December of 1971 are included.

Five strains of lactic cultures and their homologous bacteriophage races were examined for response in a whey-based medium under pH control and fortified with zero to two percent levels of added orthophosphates. One percent each of culture and phage was inoculated into each medium, which was incubated at 25 C and continuously neutralized at pH 6.3 with 20 percent NH4OH. Growth response in media was compared against growth in non fat dry milk and a commercial phage inhibitory medium (Marstar).

The isolation of Rhizobium japonicum cell walls was performed by ultrasonication and the enzymatic digestion with DNase, RNase and pronase separately. Crude cell walls were washed with M NaCl and 5% SDS and were isolated by 20,000 g centrifugation. Muropeptide amino acids were freed by hydrolysis at 121C for 10 minutes in 6N HCl.
Detection of Rhizobium japonicum murein layer amino acids was done by 2-dimensional instant thin layer chromatography on silica gel plates. Manometric, spectrophotometric, photomicrographic and quantitative biochemical techniques were employed to determine the morphological and physiological effects of 2,4-D on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
The growth and motility of Gram-positive bacteria appeared to be more adversely affected than the growth and motility of Gram-negative species. The terminal oxidation, lysis, and chain length of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria did not appear to be affected by the concentrations used. The average cell size of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was observed to increase after exposure to 1000 ppm 2,4-D. Triatoma protracta protracta, Triatoma riibida rubIda, and two strains of Rhodnius prolixus were successfully reared germfree into the fourth generation. Triatominae eggs were disinfected externally with iodine and the nymphs reared in vinyl plastic germfree modules. Germfree mice were used as the host. This is the first report of Triatominae having been reared in a germfree environment. These bugs were never exposed to bacteria internally or externally to the fourth generation.
Comparisons of conventional control bugs with replicate germfree groups in the first two generations revealed but slight differences in developmental periods. The mean adult longevity of all …

Fish of the genus Cottus were found infected with heterophyid metacercariae. Laboratory animals were infected with the metacercariae, and adult heterophid trematodes were recovered. These flukes were found to represent an undescribed species of the genus Euryhelmis. Various streams in the Willamette Valley and coastal areas were sampled for infected Cottus sp. Snails of the genera Oxytrema and Fluminicola were collected. Several possible definitive hosts were examined. A partial review of the subfamily Apophallinae and a complete review of the genus Euryhelmis are presented. Euryhelmis cotti n. sp. is placed in the subfamily Apophallinae, and its life cycle …

Salicylic acid, and to a lesser extent aspirin, have been shown to repress β-galactosidase synthesis in Escherichia coli. The repression is not due to decreased inducer uptake, nor does it result from competition with inducer for repressor. Dinitrophenol does not exert similar effects on β-galactosidase synthesis. Cyclic adenosine 31, 51-monophosphate partially relieves the repression. The extent or the relief by cyclic adenosine monophosphate seems to depend on the concentration of salicylic acid. This indicates there may be direct interaction between the actions of cyclic adenosine monophosphate and salicylic acid in E. coli cells.

Induction of Entner-Duodoroff pathway enzymes in Pseudomonas fluorescens was investigated to study the role of gluconate as a possible inducer. Glucose oxidase-deficient mutants were isolated and characterized. One of these mutants, gox-7, was deficient in particulate glucose oxidase; another mutant, gox-17, was deficient in particulate glucose and gluconate oxidase activities. Gluconate, but not glucose, induced synthesis of gluconokinase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydratase in both mutants. High constitute levels of 2-keto-3-deoxy-6-phosphogluconate aldolase were found when both mutants were grown on glucose. Growth of parent and both mutant strains on glycerol also resulted in high levels of Entner-Doudoroff pathway enzymes. It was concluded …

The nature of the action of penicillin on the cell walls of bacteria is reviewed. The composition of bacterial cell walls is compared to cell walls of blue-green algae.
The test organisms used were thermophilic: Anacystis nidulans grew optimally at 35⁰C, whereas Synechococcus lividus grew best at 45⁰ C. Growth was recorded by reading optical densities.
Cells of these two thermophilic blue-green algae were treated with varying dosages of penicillin and streptomycin. Penicillin inhibited growth of Anacystis nidulans and Synechococcus lividus in concentrations of 3.0 µg/ml and 0.03 µg/ml respectively. However, when 0.3 µg/ml of penicillin was added to Anacystis …

The problem with which this study was concerned was the development of criteria that could be used to determine when urinary catheter changes were necessary. By determining when encrustation occurred, it was felt that some complications could be eliminated by changing catheters before obstruction occurred due to encrustation.
It was the purpose of this study to: 1) explore some indications for catheter change, 2) determine if encrustation of urinary catheters necessitates catheter change, and 3) estimate potential criteria for a routine time for catheter changes.

Infiltration to an injury site or area of bacterial contamination by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (or neutrophils) is an early and essential phase of the early inflammatory reaction. Their action on foreign matter is the most critical step taken by body defense mechanisms in the first 24 hours. Anything which interferes with that action, phagocytosis, greatly hampers early inflammation. This study was designed to see the effect of elevated glucose levels on neutrophil phagocytosis in a unique strain of genetically diabetic mice.

Five new bacteriophages were isolated from lysogenic S. potsdam in this laboratory. Group B phages (P3 and P9a) were found to have unique properties, including their capability to infect strains of E. coli K-12 and E. coli C+/L. Passage of the phages through these hosts modified them (host-controlled modification) so that their ability to infect their original host, S. potsdam, was reduced and only 1-4 per million were able to form plaques.

A series of preliminary investigations was carried out to determine the factors promoting the dense, late summer waterblooms of Aphanizomenon flos-aguae in Hyrum Reservoir in northern Utah. Attempts were made to culture the Aphanizomenon in the ASM-8a medium of O'Flaherty and Phinney (J. Phycol. 6:95-97. 1970), but no growth was obtained and the algae soon lysed. Cultures were maintained, without growth, for more than four months in a lake water--lake sediment medium at 17 C under 1500 lux flourescent light.

The Salmonella potsdam group B bacteriophage P3, which grows in the rough variant strain of S. potsdam (SP2-R) and E. coli KCS11, KW117, and C+/L with similar efficiencies, was restricted by SP2-R after a passage though E. coli. The entrance of restricted E. coli-grown phage DNA into nonpermissive SP2-R cells was confirmed by the finding that after adsorption of restricted 32P-labeled P3-C1·C+/L to SP2-R and removal of the adsorbed phage heads from cells, 80.3% of the labeled DNA activity sedimented with the cells. The following members of the Rhizobiaceae were tested for their lytic response to various treatments: Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Chromobacterium violaceum, Rhizobium phaseoli, Rhizobium trifolii, Rhizobium lupini, and Rhizobium japonicum. Lysis was observed in spent growth media and as a function of saline concentration, pH, buffer composition, disodium (ethylenedinitrilo) tetraacetate (EDTA) concentration, and lysozyme.
Cells were harvested by centrifugation, washed, and resuspended in various treatment solutions. The lytic response was followed spectrophotometrically.

The purpose of the experiment was to compare the development of Trichinella spiralis in germ-free, Lactobacillus casei monocontaminated, Escherichia coli monocontaminated and conventional mice. The criteria used in the experiments were the recovery of adults and larvae of T. spiralis after 72 hours and one month post-infection, respectively. which gave an indication of the effects of no bacteria or only a certain, single species of bacterium on the development of this nematode in mice.

A new histozoic myxosporidian parasite (Class Mysoxporidea), Myxobolus meglitschi sp. nov., infecting young-of-the-year and yearling bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus Raf., from Shanty Hollow Lake, Warren County, Kentucky was described. Phenology was investigated from January 20 to December, 1969.
The magnitude of infection varied seasonally in bluegill. Incidence was highest in July and August (43.92) in host populations, declining, but not disappearing from September to December 20, 1969. The infection exhibited a yearly mean incidence of 22.318.

Post-treatment discomfort following endodontic procedures can be caused by inflammation due to injudicious use of intracanal medicaments. Camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination is advocated to reduce the inflammatory potential of the germicide and thus reduce the occurrence of post-operative pain. It is imperative that a medicament retain antimicrobial activity while reducing inflammatory potential.

A bacteriological procedure for the removal of the intestinal flora of Triatominae is described. Immersion of Triatoma protracta adults and fifth instar nymphs in 5% aqueous formaldehyde for three hours was sufficient to free the integument of these insects of viable bacteria without penetration into the alimentary tract.
Twenty-two adults and 17 fifth instar nymphs of Triatoma protracta protracta were collected from Neotoma lodges in southern California. Eleven of the 17 nymphs molted into adults in the laboratory. A study was conducted in Rich County, Utah to determine the extent of avian tuberculosis in livestock, poultry and wild birds. Sensitivity was elicited in cattle, swine and chickens by tuberculin testing.
The Mycobacterium avium organism was obtained from tissues and specimens of cattle, swine, goats, chickens, magpies and sparrows.
Methods of eradication of avian tuberculosis and the relationship of avian tuberculosis to mammalian tuberculosis are discussed.

Complementarity studies were conducted between bacteriophage P4/2 DNA and the DNAs of its naturally lysogenic host Salmonella potsdam strain 4 (SP4) and its sensitive host Salmonella potsdam strain 2 (SP2). Calf thymus DNA was used as a control.
Nitrocellulose membranes were used to adsorb varying concentrations of unlabeled DNA, using P4/2 DNA, SP4 DNA, SP2 DNA, and calf thymus DNA. A constant amount of P32 -labeled P4/2 DNA was added to each membrane and the hybrids were allowed to form. The non-lysogenic strain and several lysogenic strains of S. potsdam were tested biochemically and antigenically to detect any possible phage related property.
Fermentation reactions and citrate utilization tests were identical for all strains.
Tubes agglutination tests showed the non-lysogenic and lysogenized strains of SP2-S to be similar, and different from the naturally lysogenic strains SP3, SP4, SP9, and SP10. Absorption tests confirmed the SP2-s strains, either non-lysogenic or lysogenized, to possess an additional antigen SP3 and SP4 did not possess. SP9 and SP10 may contain small amounts of this antigen. From variation may explain the antigenic difference between these strains. …

Samples of blood were obtained from thirty healthy young adult males (Loma Linda University School of Dentistry), and contaminated with bacteria. Varying concentrations of pure glucose were added to this mixture to observe the effect of the glucose on in vitro neutrophilic phagocytosis. As the glucose levels increased a statistically significant suppression was noted in the ability of the neutrophilic leukocytes to engulf Staphylococcus epidermidis.
It was not possible, however, to predict the degree of suppression for any particular level of glucose added nor is it possible to state that suppression will occur in any one individual.
