Carbon, the building block life, is rapidly becoming the building block of nextgeneration electronics and sensor materials. Of many ways to handle nanocarbon materials, Carbon Microelectromechanical Systems (C-MEMS) emerges as a unique way for top-down fabrication of three-dimensional carbon micro to nanostructures. In this work, the use of C-MEMS techniques in nanowire biosensor fabrication is explored. Two main hindrances in the use of C-MEMS carbon structures for biosensing lie in miniaturization to nanoscale sensor material and inertness of as-fabricated carbon. Cell-cell interactions between genetically distinct oral bacteria form macroscopic clumps known as coaggregates. These interactions, termed coaggregation contribute to the formation of highly structured multispecies communities in oral cavity, known as oral biofilms. Individual species also compete and collaborate with other neighboring species through metabolic interactions allowing growth of other species by coaggregation. This study involves the mixing of selected pairs of oral bacteria to form coaggregates and quantifying differential gene expression levels in each pair in comparison with mono-species coaggregation. An efficient protocol was developed for rapid propagation and regeneration of the Dioscorea alata L. locally known as ‘ubi badak’ because of their rhinoceros-shaped tubers. In the present study, direct and indirect regeneration were induced to produce plantlets of Dioscorea alata L. For direct regeneration explants (leave, stem and node) were cultured on MS media supplemented with various combinations and concentrations of BAP and NAA to induce microshoots and roots formation. The optimum medium for microshoots formation was MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/l BAP and 0.5 mg/l NAA with the number of microshoot is 23.07±0.44 from node explant. While …

Quorum quenching (QQ) has been suggested as an alternative to antibiotic treatments for pathogenic infections as it does not affect the viability of the pathogen and imposes minimum selection pressure promoting drug resistance. During an ecological survey for quorum quenching (QQ) bacteria from soil collected in Lagoon Island (Ryder Bay, Adelaide Island, Antarctica), a bacterial strain was isolated and identified as Planococcus species, L10.15T, based on 16S rRNA gene analysis. The genomic, phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic data obtained showed that L10.15T represents a novel species for which the name Planococcus versutus sp. nov. is proposed. Actinomycetes are widespread in marine ecosystem. They are of interest in research field as they are capable to produce bioactive secondary metabolites which can be developed into useful pharmaceutical products. An example of the product is antibiotics which can be used to treat infectious diseases. The potential of antibacterial and antifungal activity of eleven marine derived actinomycetes from the genus Streptomyces were studied. In this study, three different wastewater treatment plants (STP1, STP2 and STP3) were sampled in Klang Valley. STP1 exhibited the best activated sludge health with healthy Sludge Volume (SV), Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) and Mixed Liquor Volatile Suspended Solids (MLVSS). STP2 were constantly disrupted by the mechanical failures which caused its dissolved oxygen (DO) to decrease whereas STP3 was troubled by the inadequate alkalinity in its mixed liquor causing acidic condition in aeration tank. In this study, ninety five actinobacterial isolates were cultured from seven soils samples collected on Signy Island, maritime Antarctica. Nine different isolation media were used and the isolates plates were incubated at 15ºC for up to four months. SCN agar serves as the better media for the isolation of actinobacteria. Presence of actinobacteria in the soil samples was also detected using PCR with actinobacteria specific primers. The actinobacterial isolates were characterized based on morphology (Gram-stain, coverslip examination, colour grouping), analysis of DAP isomers, antibacterial activities and by molecular methods (ARDRA, analysis of 16S rRNA sequence and detection of NRPS gene). …

In this study, primary and secondary screenings were conducted to evaluate the antibacterial and anti-yeast potential of the eleven selected marine-derived Streptomyces spp., particularly against P. shigelloides. The strains were categorized into three colour groups for morphological grouping according to the colour of aerial mycelium; namely grey, yellow green, and white colour groups. Diffusible pigments were produced by eight of the strains tested. Strain(s) from grey and white with red diffusible pigments colour groups displayed strong antibacterial activity. About 700 species of bacteria can inhabit the human oral cavity. This project initially investigated the bacterial diversity within the oral cavity of Malaysian subjects by using culture-dependent techniques and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. The second part of the research profiled the antibiotic resistance of the identified oral bacteria by the Etest method. Three sampling sites of the oral cavity from nine healthy subjects were analyzed: the tooth surface, gingival crevice, and dorsum of the tongue. The tooth surface was shown to harbor 41 species, gingival crevice harbored 51 species and tongue dorsum 41 species. On average, each subject carried …

In addition to its role in L-arginine biosynthesis in Escherichia coli, arginine repressor (ArgR), the product of the argR gene, also plays an essential role as an obligate accessory protein in Xer site-specific recombination system. A structure-function relationship study of ArgR was performed to understand more about its role in Xcr site-specific recombination. Fusion proteins between ArgRWT (wild-type ArgR) and a biotinylated peptide as well as between ArgRNV (a mutant ArgR) and a biotinylated peptide were constructed.
