Effects Of Fire On Ecosystem Carbon In The Upper Midwest And Northeast United States : A Primer, Adrienne B. Keller, Stephen D. Handler

Prior to European settlement, fire was a common disturbance across most of the Midwest and Eastern United States. Today, prescribed fire is used as a management tool to promote native, fire-tolerant species and reduce vulnerability to high-intensity, unplanned fires. This primer discusses how prescribed fire affects ecosystem structure and function, with a primary focus on ecosystem carbon storage and sequestration. Management considerations related to the effects of prescribed fire on ecosystem carbon and greenhouse gas mitigation goals are discussed.

Fodder trees and shrubs are important diet and they can provide huge amount of nutrient for grazing animals specifically in areas where less amount of forage is found. The current study was conducted during the year of 2020-2021 at Southern Ethiopia with the objectives of evaluating the palatability and nutrient composition of Terminalia brownii leaves grown in farmland. Uncovering The Dynamic Nature Of Fire Refugia Across Landscapes In Oregon's Western Cascades, Alec Scott Dyer

With increased fire activity, the presence of fire refugia is critical to support forest resiliency and mitigate large-scale vegetation conversion, however, the persistence of fire refugia within burn perimeters over time is uncertain. This study examines the dynamic nature of fire refugia by mapping the decline in forest cover over time, identifying spatiotemporal patch- and landscape-scale patterns and the biophysical drivers of delayed mortality following the 2020 Labor Day Fires occurring in Oregon’s western Cascades. After three years post-fire, delayed mortality accounted for an additional 8.5% of forest loss (total of 24,147 hectares in all five burns) compared to pre-fire …

Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) is one of the major species within Populus, a predominant genus of hardwoods in North America. However, its utilization has been limited to pulp and paper or wood-based composite boards. This study aimed at evaluating the major physical and mechanical properties of trembling aspen lumber, with an ultimate objective of using this species to produce engineered wood products (EWPs). Despite the importance of species mixtures to ecosystem-based forest management, density effect of broadleaf trees in the mixture on understory vegetation and soil properties are poorly understood. In this study, we examine the effects of trembling aspen [aspen] (Populus tremuloides Michx.) -white spruce [ spruce] (Picea glauca (Moench) Vos) mixtures that vary in the proportion of aspen on understory vegetation cover, soil nutrient supply rates, and soil properties. Organic carbon performs essential functions in soils. Soils act as sources or sinks of atmospheric organic carbon. Agricultural management influences soil organic carbon, impacting climate change. One of the crops most vulnerable to climate change is coffee. Brazil is the world's largest coffee producer, with a predominance of management under a conventional system, with sloping terrain and the absence of conservationist practices. Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch) cultivation is not without difficulty since its root environment is sensitive to many biotic and abiotic stresses. In addition, production is often phosphate limited, even at relatively high phosphorus levels, as the high fruit yields greatly exceed the capacity of the phosphorus supply by the root system. Helicoverpa armigera Hübner, 1808 (Noctuidae; Lepidoptera) is one of the major pest problems causing production constraints in both conventional and organic agricultural systems. Chemical and semichemical, along with biotechnological approaches, like the sterile insect technique, are used to manage pest populations. However, these methods raise environmental concerns. Therefore, the current study was undertaken to assess the biocontrol potential of the entomopathogenic fungal strains Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Akanthomyces lecanii, and Purpureocillium lilacinus against H. armigera. Hydroponic cultivation techniques offer innovative solutions to address challenges in conventional agriculture, such as soil infertility, disease outbreaks, and poor drainage. This study focuses on comparing the performance of different closed hydroponic systems for lettuce cultivation across distinct winter and summer planting seasons. Four closed hydroponic systems—Deep Water Culture (DWC), Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), Media-bed system (MB), and Sandponic (SP)—were evaluated for their impact on vegetative growth parameters, leaf nutrient content, chlorophyll and carotene levels, and water consumption. A comparative analysis was performed under in vitro conditions using Nicotiana tabacum lines overexpressing the genes of arginine decarboxylase (FvADC) and spermidine synthase (FvSPDS) enzymes. The transgenic and native lines were tested under controlled conditions and exposed to long-term treatment of arginine (150 mg/L), putrescine (10 mg/L), and spermidine (10 mg/L). Chlorophyll and lignin contents of the samples were measured spectrophotometrically, while proline, putrescine, spermidine, and spermine contents were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography methods. The experimental results showed that the arginine decarboxylase enzyme affects polyamine metabolism. As it is involved in several other biosynthetic pathways, this effect is significant …

The current investigation demonstrates that the application of MEL (0, 1 and 2 µmol L−1) mitigates the effects of Cr stress 0 (no Cr), 50 and 100 mg kg−1 on coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) plants. Results from the present study showed that the increasing levels of Cr concentration in the soil induced a significant decrease in shoot length, root length, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, chlorophyll-a, chlorophyll-b, total chlorophyll, carotenoid contents, net photosynthesis, transpiration rate and stomatal conductance by 36%, 24%, 17%, 64%, 27%, 23%, 19%, 29%, 36%, 18%, 73%, 83% and 43% …

Using a bioinformatics approach to identify binding pockets between proteins is a preferable method before modifying the genome to delineate host interactions with viruses. Based on extensive proteomics data in numerous databases, several interaction prediction methods are available to identify binding sites between viruses and hosts at the individual residue level, but little is known about the interaction prediction strategy for plant viruses. Many underutilized edible fruit species (UEFS) are found in the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP), which support food security (FS) for many other dependent communities as well as the indigenous people.
