Resource allocation within trees is a zero-sum game. Unavoidable trade-offs dictate that allocation to growth-promoting functions curtails other functions, generating a gradient of investment in growth versus survival along which tree species align, known as the interspecific growth–mortality trade-off. This paradigm is widely accepted but not well established. Using demographic data for 1,111 tree species across ten tropical forests, we tested the generality of the growth–mortality trade-off and evaluated its underlying drivers using two species-specific parameters describing resource allocation strategies: tolerance of resource limitation and responsiveness of allocation to resource access. Globally, a canonical growth–mortality trade-off emerged, but the trade-off …

Root system architecture, as a complex trait, has gained attention due to climate change and abiotic stress pressure on crops. The incorporation of root traits in breeding objectives may enable new advances in climate-resilient crops. Here, the genetics of the seedling root system architecture in the Synthetic W7984 × Opata M85 Doubled Haploid mapping population was investigated. Three traits at the seedling stage and mature stage root and shoot biomass traits were mapped for quantitative trait loci (QTL) identification. A total of five different loci on chromosomes 1B, 5A, and 7D with major effects were identified for total root length, …

Cotton is an essential fiber producing crop in the world. It also supports additional industries by providing high quality oil and protein in the form of cottonseed cake. Currently, there is an urgent need to increase lint yield, fiber quality, and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses due to rising pressure from a global population and possible supply shortages from the effects of erratic climate changes. Classic plant breeding and transgenic strategies need more genetic breakthroughs to support the increasing pressure for fiber quantity and quality. A potential for rapid increases in crop improvement is in various state-of-the-art gene editing …

Dry bean (phaseolus vulgaris L.) field experiment was carried out under the subhumid climatic conditions of Bafra, Turkey, to evaluate the possibilities of using hyperspectral reflectance data for estimating yield and water consumption. Three irrigation management treatments that depend on monitoring soil water content and one rain-fed treatment were subjected to dry beans arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In addition to soil water measurements, hyperspectral reflectance observations were made throughout the dry beans? growing season. Actual crop evapotranspiration values were calculated by using a detailed soil water balance approach. After smoothing the hyperspectral reflectance data, …
