Field Evidence Challenges The Often-Presumed Relationship Between Early Male Maturation And Female-Biased Sexual Size Dimorphism, Marie Claire Chelini, Eileen Hebets
Field Evidence Challenges The Often-Presumed Relationship Between Early Male Maturation And Female-Biased Sexual Size Dimorphism, Marie Claire Chelini, Eileen Hebets
Eileen Hebets Publications
Female-biased sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is often considered an epiphenomenon of selection for the increased mating opportunities provided by early male maturation (i.e., protandry). Empirical evidence of the adaptive significance of protandry remains nonetheless fairly scarce. We use field data collected throughout the reproductive season of an SSD crab spider, Mecaphesa celer, to test two hypotheses: Protandry provides fitness benefits to males, leading to female-biased SSD, or protandry is an indirect consequence of selection for small male size/large female size. Using field-collected data, we modeled the probability of mating success for females and males according to their timing of …

Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are principal insect pollinators, whose worldwide distribution and abundance is known to largely depend on climatic conditions. However, the presence records dataset on potential distribution of honeybees in Indian Ocean Islands remain less documented. Presence records in shape format and probability of occurrence of honeybees with different temperature change scenarios is provided in this article across Zanzibar Island. Maximum entropy (Maxent) package was used to analyse the potential distribution of honeybees. The dataset provides information on the current and future distribution of the honey bees in Zanzibar Island. The dataset is of great importance for improving stakeholders …

Two New Genera And Species Of Tiger Beetles From Baltic Amber (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Cicindelinae), Jürgen Wiesner, Kipling Will, Joachim Schmidt
Insecta Mundi
Two fossil tiger beetle species (Coleoptera, Carabidae, Cicindelinae) are described from Eocene Baltic amber using light microscopic and X-ray microscopic techniques. Both species are considered representatives of the subtribe Iresina Rivalier, 1971 due to the shared combination of character states: glabrous head, six labral and four suborbital setae, and glabrous pronotum. Palaeopronyssiformia groehni Wiesner, Will, and Schmidt, new genus, new species, is characterized by a glabrous and furrowed head with six labral setae, large eyes, presence of two supraorbital setae on each side, mandibles with two teeth of the incisor region, and a glabrous and furrowed pronotum. Palaeoiresina cassolai Wiesner, …

First Record Of Hippodamia Variegata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) In Illinois, U.S.A., And Relation To Its Other Midwestern Collection Records, Louis S. Hesler, Jonathan G. Lundgren
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an Afro-Eurasian lady beetle first discovered in North America near Montreal, Canada, in 1984. Subsequent records of H. variegata have occurred over a gradually expanding area radiating from the initial detection site and also include a disjunct record from British Columbia. Here, we report the first Illinois specimen of H. variegata, collected in 2004, and discuss this in relation to previous reports of H. variegata in North America.

Effect Of Habitat On Blow Fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Oviposition In Michigan, Kristi Bugajski, Parker Stoller
Effect Of Habitat On Blow Fly (Diptera: Calliphoridae) Oviposition In Michigan, Kristi Bugajski, Parker Stoller
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Forensic entomology applies data gained from insects to aid the criminal justice system. Blow flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are usually the first insects to arrive and oviposit (lay eggs) on carrion. Their quick appearance is the foundation for post mortem interval estimations, making any factors that influence their oviposition crucial. This study examined the effects of habitat (forest vs. prairie) on blow fly oviposition timing. Research was conducted in 2015 at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute in Barry County, Michigan. No significant differences were found in oviposition timing or frequency between prairie and forest habitats. Temperature and humidity were not correlated with …

Recent Siphonaptera Host And Distribution Records From Northern Michigan, William Scharf
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Along with colleagues and students I collected fleas from mammals during the period 1998-2007 in five Upper Peninsula counties, and three northern Lower Peninsula counties. Also included here are a few fleas from Grand Traverse County which were mistakenly omitted from earlier publications. Identified specimens were compared to existing distribution records for both parasite and host. Only new documented distributions for the county or the state of Michigan are listed. One parasite record is new for Michigan. In addition, 15 new county host/parasite combinations are recorded from the Upper Peninsula, and 8 new county host/parasite combinations are recorded from the …

Construction And Performance Of A Novel Capture-Mark-Release Moth Trap, Nicole Wonderlin, L. M. Ross, Peter White
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Mark-recapture studies can provide important information about moth movement as well as habitat preference across a landscape, but to date, such studies tend to be species-specific or require labor-intensive methodologies. To address this challenge, we designed a capture-mark-release-trap (CMRT) featuring a cooling unit attached to a black light trap. The CMRT captures and incapacitates moths throughout the night until the morning, when they can be marked on-site and released. Moths captured with the CMRT during summer of 2016 had a recapture rate of 1.6%, similar to those of previous studies. Importantly, because moths are immobilized by the CMRT, they can …
Notes On The Nests Of Augochloropsis Metallica Fulgida And Megachile Mucida In Central Michigan (Hymenoptera: Halictidae, Megachilidae), Jason Gibbs
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Notes on the nesting biology of two ground-nesting species are provided from Central Michigan. A single nest of Augochloropsis metallica fulgida was excavated on 12 July 2014 in Shiawassee County. There were two female nest inhabitants. Examination of mandibular wear, wing wear and ovarial development suggests one female was acting as a worker caste. Also, a nesting aggregation of Megachile mucida was observed in Ingham County. Information on nest architecture and cell construction is based on excavations of several nests during 7–15 June 2014. Megachile mucida is recorded as a new host species for the cleptoparasite Coelioxys sodalis. This is …
Species And Life Stages Of Odonata Nymphs Sampled With Large Drift Nets In Two Wisconsin Rivers, Bob Dubois, Dennis Pratt
Species And Life Stages Of Odonata Nymphs Sampled With Large Drift Nets In Two Wisconsin Rivers, Bob Dubois, Dennis Pratt
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Because relatively few nymphs of Odonata are caught in most drift studies, they have been inconsistently reported and little is known about the species and life stages that are predisposed to drift. We used large drift nets with relatively coarse mesh sizes (1500 µm) to sample late-instar odonate nymphs in two large rivers in Wisconsin. These nets were presumed to have advantages over smaller, conventional aquatic insect drift nets, including the capability to sample greater water volumes more quickly, sampling for longer periods of time before nets become clogged with debris, and a reduced likelihood of large, active insects …

New Orthopteroid Records In Michigan Derived From Sampling A Small Field, Roger G. Bland
New Orthopteroid Records In Michigan Derived From Sampling A Small Field, Roger G. Bland
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt) A 1.8 acre sandy field in Isabella County, Michigan was sampled in 1971 and 1972 to obtain data on ecological and chronological distribution of orthopteroid species (Bland and Swayze 1973a,b). The upland field vegetation was a mosaic of numerous non- contiguous floral associations (e.g. moss-grass, grass-milkweed, goldenrod-bergamot-fern) made up of 58 plant species. The land, bordered by shrubs, trees and a road, was relatively isolated. Sampling was done both day and night once a week by using sweep nets and 7 to 21 pit traps (some containing molasses as bait).

Forficula Auricularia L. (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) In Michigan, Irving J. Cantrall
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt) Although Forficula auricularia Linnaeus, the European Earwig, has been known to occur in Ontario, Canada since prior to 1937 (Vickery and Kevan, 1967), invasion of Michigan by this species is of more recent date. A specimen in the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology was taken at Lansing in 1948 and, judging from specimens at hand, the species was fairly common there by 1964. In 1966, Thomas E. Moore, of the Museum of Zoology, took a number of specimens at Beulah in Benzie County and informed me that the earwig was rather abundant on common milkweed. Since that time …

Saga Pedo (Pallas) (Tettigoniidae: Saginae), An Old World Katydid, New To Michigan, Irving J. Cantrall
The Great Lakes Entomologist
At least four species of Old World Tettigoniidae are known to have been introduced into, and to have become established in the United States. One of these, Phaneroptera quadripunctata Brunner was first taken at Niles, California in 1932 and was reported by Strohecker (1952). The other three have been taken during the past two decades. Strohecker (1955) recorded Platycleis tessellata (Charpentier) from a specimen captured at Placemille, California in 1951, Urquart and Beaudry (1953) recorded Metrioptera roeseli (Hagenbach) as occurring at Ville Saint-Laurent and at Montrdal, Qudbec, Canada in 1952, and Gurney (1960) stated that the first specimens of Meconema …

The Relationship Of The Abundance Of Saperda Inornata And Oberea Schaumii (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) In Large Trembling Aspen, Populus Tremuloides, To Site Quality, John C. Nord, Fred B. Knight
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Saperda inornata Say and Oberea schaumii LeConte are cerambycids that inhabit the stems of trembling aspen, Populus tremuloides Michaux, root suckers and the twigs of larger trees. The biologies of those species in northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan were reported by Nord et al. (1972a and 1972b). S. inornata oviposits on the cambium under horseshoe- or shield-shaped egg niches gnawed in the outer bark by the female. The term "egg niche," connotes an oviposition place prepared by the female using the mandibles and ovipositor (Linsley 1959). There are usually 2 or 3 egg niches at one level on the stem …

Hemiptera, the largest non-holometabolous order of insects, represents approximately 7% of metazoan diversity. With extraordinary life histories and highly specialized morphological adaptations, hemipterans have exploited diverse habitats and food sources through approximately 300 Myr of evolution. To elucidate the phylogeny and evolutionary history of Hemiptera, we carried out the most comprehensive mitogenomics analysis on the richest taxon sampling to date covering all the suborders and infraorders, including 34 newly sequenced and 94 published mitogenomes. With optimized branch length and sequence heterogeneity, Bayesian analyses using a site-heterogeneous mixture model resolved the higher-level hemipteran phylogeny as (Sternorrhyncha, (Auchenorrhyncha, (Coleorrhyncha, Heteroptera))). Ancestral character …

Background: Small islands serve as potential malaria reservoirs through which new infections might come to the mainland and may be important targets in malaria elimination efforts. This study investigated malaria vector species diversity, blood-meal hosts, Plasmodium infection rates, and long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) coverage on Mageta, Magare and Ngodhe Islands of Lake Victoria in western Kenya, a region where extensive vector control is implemented on the mainland. Results: From trapping for six consecutive nights per month (November 2012 to March 2015) using CDC light traps, pyrethrum spray catches and backpack aspiration, 1868 Anopheles mosquitoes were collected. Based on their cytochrome …

The Importance Of Saperda Inornata And Oberea Schaumii (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) Galleries As Infection Courts Of Hypoxylon Pruinatum In Trembling Aspen, Populus Tremuloides, John C. Nord, Fred B. Knight
The Great Lakes Entomologist
(excerpt) Trembling aspen, Populus tremuloides Michaux, and bigtooth aspen, P. grandidentata Michaux, are hosts of numerous species of injurious insects and microorganisms (Harrison 1959). Only a few of those organisms, however, are directly responsible for mortality of healthy trees. The fungus Hypoxylon pruinatum (Klotzsche) Cke. is most important in that respect, killing 1-2%o f the standing volume annually in the Lake States (Anderson 1964). It invades and spreads in cambial tissue, killing it and eventually the branch or stem by girdling. Initially, a canker appears as a sunken, yellowish-orange area in the bark (Anderson 1956). In a later stage the …
