To this subfamily belong the giants of the family, although many species in it are of moderate or insignificant size. Here belong the "Tarantula Killers," or Pompilids, belonging to the genus Pepsis, large, brilliantly-coloured species, often with fiery red wings, or blue or black wings marked with white or red, etc., that prey upon the genuine Tarantulas and other large species of spiders.

In the CANADIAN ENTOMOLOGIST, during the year 1898, I gave a series of papers on the classification of the horntails and sawflies, representing the superfamilies SIRICOIDEA (Xylophaga) and TENTHREDINOIDEA (Phyllophaga); while the past year, 1899, I gave a classification of the entomophilous wasps, or the superfamily SPHECOIDEA (incorrectly spelt Sphegoidca). The present year, 1900, with the permission of the Editor, it is my intention to give a similar series of papers on the classification of the superfamily VESPOIDEA, a large natural group, representing the genuine fossorial wasps, the papermaking wasps, potter wasps, and the predaceous, inquilinous and parasitic wasps.

Report Upon The Aculeate Hmenoptera Of The Islands Of St. Vinvent And Grenada, With Additions To The Parasitic Hymenoptera And A List Of The Described Hymenoptera Of The West Indies., William H. Ashmead
An
HAVING done so much work on the Terebrant Hymenoptera of St. Vincent and Grenada, it was with consider-able pleasure that I received, early in June 1807, a letter from Mr. George Murray, informing me that it was the desire of the West Indies Natural History Exploration Committee to transmit to me, to be worked up, the Aculeate Hymenoptera collected by Herbert H. Smith in these islands; that in a few days he expected to leave on an exploring expedition to the South Seas to be gone all summer, and if I could do the work to send my reply to …

Describes the “ of Osmia longispina Perez, redescribes the ‘ . The cocoon is oval, subtruncated at one end , rounded at the other, the walls are very thin, reddish maroon, covered with a thick tomentum which is loose. He describes the nest from a block of $$$$ sent him by M. G. Seurat from d’Ain-Draham. This had a short burrow of 1 cm. and then 2 to 4 branches ## very short which ended in cells. These branches were all placed obliquely to the main burrow. The opening was plugged with mortar containing large grains of sand and diverse …

A Generic Table Of The Family Panurgidae: A Reply To Mr. Cockerell's Critique On The Segregation Of Perdita Cockerell, William H. Ashmead
An
In Psyche for January 1899, Mr. Cockerell has made some criticisms on my segregation of the genus Perdita Cockerell, which seem to require a reply. Now, I think the whole trouble with Mr. Cockerell is expressed m his opening sentence: "I hardly know what to say about Mr. Ashmead's three new genera, established in Psyche pp. 284-285 at the expanse of Perdita"; and, had he waited a little longer and given himself more time to investigate the subject a little more thoroughly, I am convinced he would have been better able to have said something more to the point.

Classification Of The Bees Or The Superfamily Apoidea, William H. Ashmead

In the Journal of the New York Entomological Society, for March, 1 99, I separatesuperfamilies, . The first of these or the Apoidea comprise the bees, among which, especially among the social bees, are to be found probably the highest or most specialized type in the order; hence my rea on for beginning the classification of the Hymenoptera with these in insects. Our own bees, and indeed the bees of most countries, except those of the European fauna, are but little studied and very imperfectly known.

Four New Species Belonging To The Genus Plenoculus Fox, William H. Ashmead

The genus Plenoculus Fox was erected in Psyche, Vol. VI, 1893, p. 554, with one species P. davisi. Since that time, however, four additional species have been described, three by Fox and one by myself. I have now the pleasure of presenting descriptions of four new species and giving a table for distinguishing all of the species, The genus is unknown outside of boreal North America.

Up to the present time but a single species is known in the genus Diploplectron Fox, the type D. (Liris) brunneipes Cresson. Recently, in arranging a large collection of Hymenoptera, presented to the United States National Museum by Professor Carl F. Bader, three additional species were recognized, which are described below.
Super-Families In The Hymenoptera And Generic Synopses Of The Families Thynnidae, Myrmosidae And Mutillidae, William H. Ashmead
Super-Families In The Hymenoptera And Generic Synopses Of The Families Thynnidae, Myrmosidae And Mutillidae, William H. Ashmead
An
The three families, Thynnidre, Myrmosidre and Mutillidre have never been properly defined, or characterized, and their genera, at present, on account of the diversity between the sexes, and the diffi-culties attending their proper correlation, are in utter confusion, and often wrongly placed. This confusion is also due, to a certain extent, to a lack of sufficient study, and the careless and insufficient characterization of some of the species and genera by the original describers, so that until lately it has been impossible to bring them into anything like order.
