On The Trail Of The Dingo, A R. Tomlinson, A G. Moore May 1952

On The Trail Of The Dingo, A R. Tomlinson, A G. Moore

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

A successful motorised expedition to collect information on the breeding areas and migratory movements of wild dogs was completed in March of this year. This was the second expedition of this nature organised by the Agriculture Protection Board and much valuable information was obtained which should simplify the work of the Board's doggers in the guarding of the sheep-breeding areas.

More Beef From The Kimberleys, Part 2, Grant A. Smith May 1952

More Beef From The Kimberleys, Part 2, Grant A. Smith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Low phosphorus content and low protein content of pastures usually go hand in hand and as most dry feed is deficient in both of these important nutritional needs, it is easy to understand why our Kimberley cattle do well in the "wet" when ample green feed is available, but fall away rapidly in condition as the feed dries out. Increasing the protein content is essentially a long-term project, but I feel that the remedying of phosphorus deficiency is an economic possibility, which could be put into effect fairly rapidly.

The Effect Of Feeding Sucrose To Beef And Swine On The Percentage Of Carbohydrate, Ph, Color, Texture, And Flavor Of Muscle And Liver, Margaret B. Merkley May 1952

The Effect Of Feeding Sucrose To Beef And Swine On The Percentage Of Carbohydrate, Ph, Color, Texture, And Flavor Of Muscle And Liver, Margaret B. Merkley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Carbohydrates have long been a part of animal feeding rations. Grains are included in all animal feeding formulas. The by-products of sugar beets have been used for many years in livestock feeding (Kutish 1950b). The use of molasses in commercial feed mixes in 1899 made possible its extended use in animal feeding practices (Hall 1950).

Protein feeds for cattle are relatively high in price and not available in adequate supply. With these facts in mind Culbertson of Iowa State College set up experiments in 1950 to find out whether part or all of the protein supplement could be replaced with …

Factors Affecting The California Quail Populations In Uintah County, Utah, R. Lynn Nielson May 1952

Factors Affecting The California Quail Populations In Uintah County, Utah, R. Lynn Nielson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The California Quail is native to the coastal and semi-arid regions of California extending north into Oregon. Two subspecies are commonly recognized. the California Quail (Lophortyx californica brunnescens Ridgway), and the Valley Quail (Lophortyx californica californica Shaw). The two forms are very similar in coloration and habits and, for the purpose of this study, no effort is made to distinguish the two.

A Management Study Of The Idaho-Utah Interstate Deer Herd With Special Reference To The Sublett, Black Pine, And East Raft River Mountain Unit, Kenneth L. Diem May 1952

A Management Study Of The Idaho-Utah Interstate Deer Herd With Special Reference To The Sublett, Black Pine, And East Raft River Mountain Unit, Kenneth L. Diem

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Extensive deer migrations have been observed for many, years in western mountain regions. More recently several complex interstate migrations have become the objects of careful study and the subjects of special wildlife movement programs. The interstate deer migrations between the Sublett-Black Pine, Idaho, areas and the East Raft River Mountain, Utah, area are not exceptional. These migrations are now of such a magnitude that they are creating management problems of increasing importance to the 2 states involved.

Electric Chick Brooding Studies, F. D. Yung, F. E. Mussehl Apr 1952

Electric Chick Brooding Studies, F. D. Yung, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Perhaps one of the most valuable lessons to be learned from a study of chick brooding is that good results can often be obtained in more ways than one. In carrying on work with electric brooders at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station, special attention has been given to such factors as insulation and to other details of design which effect economy of operation and ease of construction. Low cost rather than "cheapness" has been the ideal. The work has been cooperative between the Agricultural Engineering Department and the Poultry Husbandry Department of the University of Nebraska.

"Swelled Head" In Rams, C R. Toop Mar 1952

"Swelled Head" In Rams, C R. Toop

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

During the summer and autumn months a disease of rams, popularly known as "swelled head" or "big-head" is encountered from time to time in Western Australian flocks. The condition is almost entirely confined to rams of the horned breeds and outbreaks which have come under notice in this State have occurred only among Merinos and Dorset Horns. Young rams and weaners are most frequently affected and the disease results from the infection of wounds about the forehead sustained by the animals when fighting.

Strain 19 In Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Since the inauguration of its brucellosis control campaign in 1946, the West Australian Department of Agriculture has inoculated nearly 72,000 dairy heifers with Strain 19 vaccine and established a remarkable degree of control throughout the dairying districts. As the success of the control measures is largely dependent upon the vaccination of each year's crop of heifers, the work is now being intensified and members of the field staff are again busy in the dairying areas.

More Beef From The Kimberleys, Grant A. Smith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Beef production in the Kimberleys is an industry which has eked out a precarious existence for many years. Today it is offered an unprecedented opportunity for expansion on sound economic lines, and it is the purpose of this article to offer some suggestions as to how this may best be achieved.

Aids To Better Shearing, W. L. Mcgarry, J. Reilly, M. Butler Jan 1952

Aids To Better Shearing, W. L. Mcgarry, J. Reilly, M. Butler

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

The demonstrations and instructional work in shearing that have been carried out in the farming areas have revealed the universal difficulty among learner-shearers in "getting a cut." Experience has shown that this absence of good cutting in handpieces has been due in large measure to the general lack of knowledge regarding grinding and the correct adjustment or "setting up" of the combs and cutters on the handpiece. Poor cutting has also resulted from the common practice of using combs and cutters that do not match, together with faulty handpiece maintenance. These and other factors leading to such poor results will …

The Improvement In Type Of South Dakota Dairy Cattle Through Artificial Breeding, Kenneth I. Gross Jan 1952

The Improvement In Type Of South Dakota Dairy Cattle Through Artificial Breeding, Kenneth I. Gross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Body conformation is associated with function among all classes of livestock. Dairy cattle type deals with characteristics indicating ability to produce milk and butterfat economically along with breed character and other values of an aesthetic nature. In order to have economical milk and butterfat production, the dairy cow should possess that type of body conformation which is able to withstand the rigors of disease, reproduction and year after year milk production. A large percentage of dairy cattle sold in South Dakota and surrounding territory, whether for breeding purpose or commercial production, are evaluated primarily on the basis of their type. …

Some Mechanical And Horomonal Methods Of Dilating The Bovine Cervix, Edmund F. Graham Jan 1952

Some Mechanical And Horomonal Methods Of Dilating The Bovine Cervix, Edmund F. Graham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The selection for certain inherited characteristics war practiced approximately 2000 years before the Christian Era. Jacob (Genesis 30:28-43) was given all the speckled cattle in his master’s herd for being herdsman. In a few years, by selecting for the spotting factor, only speckled cattle remained in the herd. Selection was the first tool for segregating definite characteristics. As a means of more rapid improvement artificial insemination was practiced by an Arabian chieftain as early as 1322 A. D. (35). Since 1322 these crude methods of transferring semen have been perfected until approximately four million cows were inseminated in the United …

Red-Backed Vole With A Tick Attached Near Eyeball, H. L. Gunderson Jan 1952

Red-Backed Vole With A Tick Attached Near Eyeball, H. L. Gunderson

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

A red-backed vole (Clethrionomys gapperi), with a tick attached to or just under the inner corner of the eyelid at the canthus, was caught in a live trap on July 11, 1961. This is an unusual place of attachment and it is difficult to understand how the tick could have become attached at a point where it could easily be scratched off by either the forefoot or hind foot of the vole.

North Of The Nullarbor Plain, A. R. Tomlinson, C. K. Blair Jan 1952

North Of The Nullarbor Plain, A. R. Tomlinson, C. K. Blair

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

For a few hardy dingo-trappers—experienced bushmen able and willing to endure the rigours pf a nomadic existence in a waterless country - the area to the north of the Nullabor Plains has long been a favoured watering ground. In the 1949-1950 season bounties were paid on about 3,000 dingo scalps from this area.

Life Cycle Studies On Stephanostomum Pacificum, A New Species Of Trematode, From The Pacific Marine Station Area, James Frank Hughes

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This report summarizes the results of a study on the life cycle of a member of the trematode family Acanthooolpidae, genus Stephanostomum Looss, 1899, which was carried on during the summers of 1948, 1949, 1951, and the winter of 1948-49 at the Marine Station of the College or the Pacific at Dillon Beach, California. Only one previous experimental work has been done on the life cycle of any member of this family. Martin (1939) reported the life cycle of Stephanostomum tenue (Linton) which he had obtained at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Modifications of his technical procedures have been used in this …

Feeding Milking Shorthorn Steers, M. L. Baker, V. H. Arthaud, C. H. Adams Oct 1951

Feeding Milking Shorthorn Steers, M. L. Baker, V. H. Arthaud, C. H. Adams

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The objectives of the feeding work were to provide the producer with feed-lot data and where possible with slaughter data for Milking Shorthorn steers. As a definite breeding research program with the Milking Shorthorn herd was planned, it also was believed that information about the beef-making qualities of the steers should be of equal importance with milk and butterfat production records.
