Non-invasive measures for assessing long-term stress in free ranging mammals are an increasingly important approach for understanding physiological responses to landscape conditions. Using a spatially and temporally expansive dataset of hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) generated from a threatened grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) population in Alberta, Canada, we quantified how variables representing habitat conditions and anthropogenic disturbance impact long-term stress in grizzly bears. We characterized spatial variability in male and female HCC point data using kernel density estimation and quantified variable influence on spatial patterns of male and female HCC stress surfaces using random forests. In many developing countries wetlands play an important role in supporting the livelihood of both urban and rural communities. In rural areas wetlands are increasingly becoming a focal point of production and livelihood diversification due to their richness and the diverse options they provide. This paper explores the livelihood options provided by Simiyu wetland in Magu District, Simiyu Region, to the community living arround it using social survey methods. Cattle are reared in diverse environments and collecting phenotypic body temperature (BT) measurements to characterize BT variation across diverse environments is difficult and expensive. To better understand the genetic basis of BT regulation, a genome-wide association study was conducted utilizing crossbred steers and heifers totaling 239 animals of unknown pedigree and breed fraction. Rare, alpine, endemic species are particularly at risk for extinction. Alpine environments are especially vulnerable to climate change and human impacts, such as ski resort development and snowmaking. Draba asterophora Payson is a rare, alpine species that occurs only in three disjunct mountain-top regions surrounding Lake Tahoe. It is currently threatened by human impacts, such as ski resorts, as well as indirect influences of climate change and therefore in need of better understanding for conservation purposes. An intrinsic link exists between soil moisture and soil nitrogen. Factors that increase or decrease soil moisture can have a profound effect on soil nitrogen cycling, which may have later repercussions in the plant community. Post-fire soil water repellency is one factor that can limit soil moisture acquisition and may indirectly affect nitrogen cycling and weed invasion in woody islands of fertility. Plots centered on burned Juniperus osteosperma trees were either left untreated or treated with a surfactant to ameliorate water repellency. Dogs offer unique opportunities to study correlations between morphology and behavior because skull shapes and body shape are so diverse among breeds. Several studies have shown relationships between canine cephalic index (CI: the ratio of skull width to skull length) and neural architecture. Concerns have recently been raised about the treatment and use of hydroxyapatite, an important component of fish scale. The goal of this investigation is to evaluate the feasibility of using hydroxyapatite extracted from fish scale (FHAP) for bone tissue engineering. FHAP or sintered FHAP (sFHAP) was added to chitosan/gelatin (CS/GEL) mixture to prepare membrane. The effect of FHAP and sFHAP on the physical and chemical properties of the membrane and their affinities towards MG63 cells were studied. The southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii) is a longlived, large, and highly migratory marine fish in the Indian Ocean. They can live up to 40 years and migrate to the Great Australian Bight in the summer when 1-4 years old. The Great Australian Bight is characterized as the most productive coastal upwelling zone in southern Australia and is the largest area of cool-water carbonate sedimentation in the world. There is evidence of plankton mortality and extinction at various temporal and spatial scales induced by man-made pollution, or by natural causes (ageing, competition, predation, diseases, natural pollution). If mortalities take place at large scale they might become of environmental concern and may impact other biotic compartments including fisheries substantially. Such mortalities are a consistent phenomenon at time scales from geological mass extinctions to regularly occurring HABs, that appear to be increasing on a global basis. Wuhanlinigobius, a new genus of Hemigobius generic group would been established and assigned from Mugilogobius polylepis Wu and Ni, 1985. Mugilogobius polylepis has been regarded as belong to genus Eugnathogobius based on lacking head pores and representing longitudinal sensory papillae in previous taxonomic study. However, we compared the osteological features of Mugilogobius polylepis Wu and Ni, 1985 and Eugnathogobius microps Smith, 1931 as well as the molecular phylogenetic analysis based on the mtDNA ND5, Cyt-b genes and D-loop region. Coastal areas are the first marine systems being impacted by anthropogenic pollution and eutrophication. Organic matter poses a particularly negative impact on the environment due to its oxygen depleting and eutrophying effects. Shenzhen Bay mudflat contains rich organic matter. Here, we compare changes of polychaete assemblage parameters on seasonal data obtained from a Shenzhen Bay mudflat in a three-year study. The results based on the seasonal and spatial variations of polychaete species number, density and biomass, ShannonWiener diversity index, evenness index and richness index confirmed that high organic matter content impacted their distribution. The shallow water squat lobster genus Lauriea Baba, 1971 is reported for the first time from Taiwan. The three specimens collected from Kenting, southern Taiwan belong to Lauriea siagiani Baba, 1994. Lauriea siagiani is very distinctive by its striking coloration and having dense long plumose setae on the body. Its report in Taiwan fills the gap of geographical distribution of this species from Indonesia to Japan.

New Records Of Deep-Sea Blind Lobsters (Crustacea: Decapoda: Polychelidae) From Taiwan, Su-Ching Chang, Shane T. Ahyong, Tin-Yam Chan

The deep-sea lobster family, Polychelidae Wood-Mason, 1875, contains six genera and 38 species worldwide, of which nine species in three genera have been reported from Taiwan. Herein we present four new records of Polychelidae from Taiwan, namely Pentacheles validus A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, Stereomastis surda (Galil, 2000), Willemoesia forceps A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, and W. leptodactyla (Thomson, 1873). A total of 13 species in four genera of Polychelidae are now known from Taiwan; a key to the species is provided.

Decadal Variation Of Wintertime Sea Surface Temperature In The Taiwan Strait, Yi-Chun Kuo, Ming-An Lee

Long-term advanced very-high-resolution radiometer (AVHRR) data with a resolution of 0.04° provided clearer views of sea surface temperature (SST) warming and variation associated with ENSO in the Taiwan Strait (TS) during wintertime (1981-2013). Over the 33 year period, the spatial average of winter SST warming in the TS reached to 3°C. From 1981- 2001, the SST exhibited an increasing trend, with the fastest warming taking place from 1991-2001 after which it seemed to pause. From 2002-2012, the SST showed a cooling trend (-0.08°C/yr). Spatial variation of the warming was distinct, with the highest values concentrated in the winter fronts region, …

Two new gobiid species of Vanderhorstia Smith, 1959 which have been recently collected from Japanese waters. Both new species are distributed in marine coral reef habitats off the Ryukyus, Japan. Vanderhorstia cyanolineata sp. nov. can be well distinguished from congeners by the following unique combination of features: (1) fin ray counts: second dorsal fin rays I/12, anal fin rays I/12; pectoral fin rays 18-19; (2) fin shape: low first dorsal fin with about equal 3rd to 5th spinous rays, caudal fin large and middle rays as sword-like projection; (3) scales: LR 50-52; TR 18; and (4) its own specific colouration …

We investigated the diel cycle mechanism of a tide-pool ciliate community of the northeastern coast of Taiwan. The investigation was conducted on 17th-18th June (typical summer weather), and on 23th -24th July 2013 (10 days after a typhoon). In June, the tide-pool ecosystem was an independent and the excystment of ciliates in the tide-pool caused a dramatic increase in population abundance, as well as composition change. The 70 different samples of larval fish morphotypes have been successfully amplified and sequenced in detail via PCR amplification for the partial sequences of mtDNA CO I gene. The overall genetic similarities ranged from 83% to 100%. Totally 26 different fish species can be detected and analyzed. There are 16 fish species can be identified into specific level. The main cause of annual fluctuations in catch and species composition of fisheries is usually uncertain, but a prevailing view has been that fishing effects are more critical than environmental variability. The seasonal dynamics of flatfish assemblage in the coastal waters off northeastern Taiwan was examined based on samples collected between March 2004 and March 2005 taken by bottom trawlers and landed at Da-Shi fishing port, Yilan county. A total of 28 species from 5 families and 18 genera were found. The Bothidae was the most dominant family, accounting for 81% of the total catch, while the most dominant species was the Pseudorhombus pentophthalmus. This study investigated the relationships between assemblages of larval fish and hydrographic features in the East China Sea (ECS) and seas surrounding Taiwan during the summer of 2007. A survey was conducted from 2007 July 1 to 2007 July 11 in the ECS and from 2007 July 4 to 2007 July 16 in the waters surrounding Taiwan. A total of 12,670 larval fishes belonging to 95 families, 163 genes, and 189 species were identified. Food paralytic poisoning incident was detected in the gastropod Nassariidae Niotha clathrata and Zeuxis scalaris occurred in December 2012 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The toxin was purified from each remain of cooked gastropod and victim tissues by ultrafiltration using a YM-3 membrane, followed by C18 cartridge column purification. Based on analyses by LC-MS/MS, the causative agent of gastropod food poisoning was identified as tetrodotoxin. The toxicity of remain of cooked sample was 245 MU/g (1MU = 0.178 µg TTX) for N. clathrata and 203 MU/g for Z. scalaris. The blood and excrements of victim was shown to contain TTX of 0.13 …

Piscine iridoviruses infect a wide variety of fish and are classified into three genera: Lymphocystivirus, Ranavirus and Megalocytivirus. Lymphocystiviruses cause non-fatal, dermal infections, while ranaviruses and megalocytiviruses produce devastating, systemic infections with mortality reaching up to 100%. Although both ranaviruses and megalocytiviruses cause fatal systemic infections, they induce different pathology. The study of ichthyoplankton community associated with oceanic features on the continental shelf of southern East China Sea (ECS) was conducted in early winter from 2006 to 2009. The species composition of the ichthyoplankton and its spatial distribution was classified and compared with oceanic front. A total number of 1,809 fish larvae individuals were sampled from 5 field surveys, and represented 76 families and 137 species. Otoliths are calcareous structures found in the labyrinth membrane in the otic capsules of teleost fishes and are constituted of three pairs: the sagittae, lapilli and asterisci. They have long been recognized as being species specific. A comparative morphology of the sagittae, asterisci and lapilli among six eel species of Anguilliformes belonging to the Family Congridae, Muraenesocidae and Muraenidae was studied. The genus Hemigobius Bleeker, 1874 is has been regarded as only two valid species in previous study including H. hoevenii (Bleeker, 1851) and H. mingi (Herre, 1936). Traditionally, the both Vaimosa crassa Herre, 1945 and Mugilogobius obliquifasciatus Wu and Ni, 1985 found from Chinese and Taiwanese waters had ever been regarded as the junior synonyms of H. hoevenii. A re-examination of the holotype of Gobius gastrospilos Bleeker, 1853 confirmed thatthis species belongs to the genus Pseudogobius Popta, 1922. The detailed redescription of Pseudogobius gastrospilos (Bleeker, 1853) would be provided in this paper. Furthermore, a series of field surveys of the gobioid fauna in brackish habitats of Taiwan revealed and summarized the following four newly recorded gobiid species: Pseudogobius gastrospilos (Bleeker, 1853), Mugilogobius chulae (Smith, 1932), Mugilogobius mertoni (Weber, 1911) and Mugilogobius myxodermus (Herre, 1935). The diagnosis of these newly recorded species of Taiwan would be also provided herein.

A series of field collections of fishes were made in the Matang mangrove, Malay Peninsula in April 2011. At least 23 genera and 27 species of gobioid fishes including a new Pseudogobius species were collected and recorded in this region during the expedition. The checklist of gobioid fauna and available materials are provided herein, and the formal description of a new goby species, Pseudogobius fulvicaudus Huang, Shao & Chen, new species will be provided and discussed in this paper.
