‘Why Don’T You Just Marry A Farmer?’: Barriers And Challenges Experienced By Women Farm Owners In Georgia, Abby E. Green, Dan B. Croom, M'Randa R. Sandlin, Anna Scheyett
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
This research explores the resilience of women farm owners in Georgia amidst societal gender inequality and discrimination. The study identifies barriers women face as farm owner-operators and strategies they use to overcome these obstacles. A two-stage interview process focused on participants’ life histories and reflections on their experiences. The study reveals significant challenges for women in farming, including gender discrimination, the knowledge required to farm, and the dichotomy between farming and home responsibilities. Gender discrimination is prevalent, with women having to prove their legitimacy as farmers. The need to acquire farming knowledge quickly was another significant barrier. The study aligns …
Organic-Based Nutrient Solutions For Sustainable Vegetable Production In A Zero -Runoff Soilless Growing System, Maitha Salem Almheiri
Organic-Based Nutrient Solutions For Sustainable Vegetable Production In A Zero -Runoff Soilless Growing System, Maitha Salem Almheiri
Theses
As the adoption of soilless production systems escalates to meet the rising demand for safe and healthy fresh produce, the growing environmental awareness and consumer’s preference for sustainable production systems are stimulating the reduction of synthetic inputs. A greenhouse study using an auto-pot zero-runoff hydroponic system and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) as a model vegetable crop was conducted to evaluate the potential of substituting synthetic fertilizer Nutrient Solutions (NS) with organic-based NS. The use of organic NS resulted in lettuce plants with fewer leaves and a smaller leaf area, plant height, stem diameter, and fresh biomass compared to those …

The exploration of novel biomarkers to assess poultry health is of paramount importance, not only to enhance our understanding of the pathogenicity of zoonotic agents but also to evaluate the efficacy of novel treatments as alternatives to antibiotics. The present study aimed to investigate potential gut health biomarkers in broiler chicks challenged by Campylobacter jejuni and subjected to a continuous water disinfection program. A total of 144 one-day-old hatched broiler chicks were randomly allocated to four treatment groups with four replicates each, according to the following experimental design: Group A received untreated drinking water; Group B received drinking water treated …

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
The research involving the beneficial aspects of amino acids being added to poultry feed pertaining to performance, growth, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio is extensive. Yet currently the effects of amino acids on the gut microbiota aren’t fully understood nor have there been many studies executed in poultry to explain the relationship between amino acids and the gut microbiota. The overall outcome of health has been linked to bird gut health due to the functionality of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) for digestion/absorption of nutrients as well as immune response. These essential functions of the GI are greatly driven by the …

Diverse patterns of climate and edaphic factors challenge detection of soil property change in the US Great Plains. Because detectable soil change can take decades, insights into the trajectory of soil properties frequently require long-term site monitoring and, where available, associated soil archives to enable comparisons with initial or baseline states. Unfortunately, few multi-decadal soil change investigations have been conducted in this region. Here, we document effects of dryland cropping on a suite of soil properties by comparing matched historic (1947) and contemporary (2018) soil samples from the Haas Soil Archive at three sites in the US Great Plains: Moccasin, …

The prevailing climate is an important factor affecting the development of the physical quality and flavor of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) beans. The influence of harvest seasons on the physical, chemical, and flavor characteristics of cacao beans from Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, southern Thailand, was assessed. Among cacao beans, those harvested in the rainy season (R) had the highest fresh and dry weights and the lowest bean count per 100 g (87.00 ± 2.83). Although the overall fat content remained relatively constant across harvest seasons, cacao beans harvested in R exhibited a significantly higher fatty acid (C16:0, C18:1, and …

Objective: This study aimed to improve the functional characteristics of Polygonati rhizoma (PR). Methods: Using the freeze-dried fresh PR and nine-steam-nine-bask processing PR as control products, the study comprehensively compared and analyzed human sensory, electronic sensory, color, fluidity, dissolving ability, extract content, total polysaccharide content and total saponin content in PR powder modified by extrusion cooking. Results: Extrusion cooking effectively eliminated the bad taste and improved the color and fluidity of PR powder. Compared with the nine-steam-nine-bask processing, extrusion cooking significantly increased the total polysaccharide content and total saponin content, with increase rates of 49.27% and 69.10%, respectively. Conclusion: …

Objective: This research aimed to study the preparation of standardized and stable sourdough starter, to explore the effects of different drying processes and protective agents on the survival rate of sourdough, and examine its storage activity. Methods: A variety of fruits were selected to prepare sourdough, the fermentation process was studied, and the strains were isolated and identified by ITs and 16s gene sequencing in the database. The optimum scheme was obtained by selecting the drying process, sample state and protectant formulation with the activity after drying and storage activity as indexes. Results: It was found that the bread prepared …
