Improving the quality of irrigated pastures can increase the profitability of ruminant production systems. Increasing pasture plant biodiversity is beneficial for ruminants, pollinators, and soil health, but it is challenging to manage weed incursion in seeded mixed-species pastures. This study assessed the weed incursion that resulted when forage legumes or grasses were seeded as binary mixtures with one of four non-legume forbs. Defoliation occurred at 6-week intervals as either mowing or mob grazing. Species of conservation concern are often habitat specialists, posing significant risk to those species when specific plant communities are threatened. As a result, practitioners habitually focus conservation efforts on these communities while ignoring ecological mechanisms that explain the wildlife–plant relationships. In doing so, practitioners may overlook alternative vegetation communities that could maintain wildlife populations under alternative conditions (e.g., climate change). Context Forest fires are key ecological factors affecting pine forests globally. Understanding impacts of varying fire intensities on forest ecosystem components is crucial for predicting recovery and informing management. Objectives This study aimed to assess effects of different surface fire intensities on structural components of pine forests, including tree canopy, herbaceous layer, and surface soil horizons, and identify relationships between fire intensity and ecosystem parameters. Boreal forests provide a wealth of ecosystem services, many of which are linked to forest productivity. Climate change is expected to increase the frequency, duration, and severity of drought, and undermine the productivity of western boreal forests. Favouring species mixtures has emerged as a potential strategy to increase forest resilience to drought. Agricultural investment in low- and middle-income countries faces credit access challenges. Several financial institutions, particularly banks, normally impose some conditions where the possession of a land title deed is required to access agricultural credits. This paper examines whether, and to what extent, rural agricultural land ownership influences agricultural credit access for rural farmers in Tanzania. The study focuses only on rural farmers and tries to find out whether these smallholder farmers can use their land, which is largely unformalized, as a collateral for credit access. As agriculture is a hazardous occupation, this project discusses agricultural workers with health conditions/disabilities, experiencing disruption to occupational performance and participation, increasing risk of secondary injuries, and impacting overall well-being and how occupational therapy practitioners can improve these factors through the development of a guidebook. The aim of the following work was to investigate and compare curcumin and cayenne pepper in microbeads composed of sodium alginate (SA) crosslinked with montmorillonite (MMT) to act as drug carriers and their antimicrobial resistance. The microbeads were prepared through ion-exchange in multivalent solutions of CaCl2, MgCl2 and AlCl3. The microbeads were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and the time required for intercalation of curcumin and cayenne pepper with MMT. Simulated intestinal fluid (pH 7.3) and gastric fluid (pH 1.2) at 37°C were used for comparison in swelling studies. …

This case examines the objectives and management practices of Cunyu Station in Western Australia from 1990–2017. The owners’ objectives were to apply best practice knowledge augmented with localized management skills to rigorously adjust total grazing pressure (TGP) from all species (cattle, kangaroos, camels, horses, and donkeys) to levels commensurate with improved landscape conditions, minimized operating costs, and stable cash flows. A combination of infrastructure investment, feral herbivore control, use of the native apex predator (dingo) for kangaroo control, creation, and maintenance of around 18 months of ‘buffer’ pasture, and finishing 30-month-old steers on the Station were key management practices for …

Currently, comprehensive pepper variety performance data specific to Indiana has been limited. Recognizing this gap, we have initiated a systematic evaluation process. To date, we have conducted thorough assessments of 35 different pepper varieties, with each variety being carefully studied through two distinct production cycles. This research paper presents findings from five sweet bell pepper varieties and five tapered pepper varieties, which were grown and evaluated at the Purdue Student Farm in West Lafayette, Indiana.

As we increasingly understand the impact that land management intensification has on local and global climate, the call for nature-based solutions (NbS) in agroecosystems has expanded. Moreover, the pressing need to determine when and where NbS should be used raises challenges to socioecological data integration as we overcome spatiotemporal resolutions. The importance of trees in non-forest landscapes has been the focus of only a few studies. However, these trees provide many important ecosystem services. In this study, we mapped and quantified these trees using Sentinel-2 (S2) and very high-resolution (VHR) Google satellite imagery without any field campaigns. We performed a Random Forest (RF) classification to map the spatial distribution of native trees in different scenarios. The optimal model showed an overall accuracy and kappa of 0.99 and 0.98, respectively. In the rice agroecosystems of Southeast Asia, rice root knot nematode (Meloidogyne graminicola) significantly impairs yield, representing a major species within the ‘graminis-group’ known for its morphological similarities with other root knot nematodes (RKNs). This study delves into the variations in reproductive potential, morphology, morphometrics, and genetic diversity among thirty RKN populations in rice across three distinct agroecological zones in Jharkhand, India. Despite notable differences in reproductive potential among the populations, morphological and morphometric correlations to reproductive potential were inconclusive. Drought represents a major global threat to the environment, thus leading to food insecurity. Transcription factors (TFs) have a significant role in regulating the expression of stress-related genes. TALE genes, a type of TF, are known to regulate important biological processes like the maintenance of shoot apical meristems and root formation in plants. In this study, 35 TALE genes were identified and they were found to be categorized into KNOX-like homeodomain (KNOX) and BLH/BELL-like subfamilies in Phaseolus vulgaris according to the phylogenetic analysis. Maize Root-Soil Microbial Interactions And Their Effects On Soil Health And Yield, Wei Yang, Qiyuan Zhang, Hongyu Cai, Tianhang Bai, Xuejiao Ren

In agroecosystems, interactions between maize root systems and soil microbes have significant effects on soil health and plant yield. In order to quantitatively assess the impact of this mutualism, the study used field experiments and soil analysis methods to analyze the effects of different sludge applications on soil physicochemical properties and microbial activity. The experiments were studied in a controlled trial with different sludge treatment gradients. The results showed that the sludge-applied soil exhibited positive changes in structure and biological activity compared to the control. This study was conducted to determine the best turfgrass varieties to create green areas under long and cold winter conditionsin high-altitude regions. In 2018, 14 varieties of Lolium perenne, Festuca arundinacea, Poa pratensis, Festuca rubra, and Agrostis tenuiswere planted. Sherbet is one of the most popular traditional beverages in Türkiye and it has existed since the early times of the Ottoman Empire. The production of sherbet consists of the dilution of mixed syrups made from various plants, flowers, fruits, roots, barks, or seeds. In this study, purple basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) sherbet was produced, and the physical changes, phenolic content, volatile profile and sensory properties were evaluated. Comparison of analytical results of fresh basil and sherbet samples showed that the colour values of fresh basil increased after sherbet production. Chromium (Cr) is an extremely toxic metal for all living organisms and its concentration in the environment is constantly increasing due to human activities. Plants quickly absorb the Cr subsequently, it enters the human food chain and poses serious health issues. Plant parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are one of the major threats to various crops including cereals. In wheat and barleyproduction, the profitability of cultivation heavily depends on the management of cyst nematodes (CNs), especially on Heteroderaavenae, H. filipjevi, and H. latipons. In this study, field surveys were conducted in wheat and barley cultivation systems of Uşak Provinceto reveal the presence and diversity of PPNs. In total, 80 wheat and barley fields were surveyed, and samples (soil and root) wereprocessed for the isolation and identification of PPNs.
