Optimizing Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste And Industrial Sludge For Biogas Production, Emma R. Murray
Optimizing Anaerobic Digestion Of Food Waste And Industrial Sludge For Biogas Production, Emma R. Murray
Honors College Theses
Food waste is a major contributor to municipal solid waste, and its disposal at landfills has significant environmental and economic impacts. Opportunities need to be identified for the sustainable management of food waste at large scales. Pulp and paper mills throughout the country commonly use anaerobic digestion to treat their waste sludge; however, this sludge can consist of over 50% lignin, which is slowly or negligibly digested. This research aims to explore the sustainability of co-digestion of food waste and paper mill sludge. Lab-scale studies were used to assess the feasibility of anaerobic digestion by measuring treatment efficiencies and biogas …

Investigation Of Mechanism And Inventory Of Greenhouse Gases Emission From Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment Facility, Chawakorn Sanusan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This research aims to elucidate the mechanisms and quantify the inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—specifically carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O)—from an activated sludge (AS) wastewater treatment facility at the Pattaya Wastewater Treatment Plant (Soi Wat Nongyai), Thailand. A closed dynamic flux chamber (CDC) technique coupled with a portable Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) gas analyzer was utilized to measure gas concentrations across three critical units: the primary sedimentation tank, aeration tank, and final sedimentation tank together with a direct-probe technique to measure across the sludge thickening tank, and sludge dewatering area. Emission rates were calculated using both …

A Study Of Characteristics, Origins And Fates Of Ultrafine Particles Over Taichung City, Taiwan, Kijpat Thavorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Ultrafine particles (UFPs, <0.1 μm) pose health risks and are challenging to model. This study investigated UFP dynamics in Taichung City, Taiwan, using April 2021 observations and GEOS-Chem-TOMAS simulations. Observations included particle number size distributions (analyzed from 11.8 to 593.5 nm), sulfuric acid, and meteorological data. The model used 15 size bins, testing five nucleation schemes (Base, Binary, Binary ion, Ternary, Ternary ion) for new particle formation (NPF) sensitivity.Base, Ternary, and Ternary ion schemes simulated sporadic nucleation bursts; Binary schemes showed minimal activity. Despite visual coincidence with sulfuric acid peaks, simulated nucleation rates exhibited weak linear correlation (Pearson R ≈ −0.04). The model consistently and substantially underestimated observed particle number concentrations across all modes (NMBs ranging from -8.5% to -90.9%; correlation coefficients (absolute values) from 0.06 to 0.21). Crucially, no clear classical "banana-shaped" NPF events were observed in observations or model simulations. These findings underscore the need for improved nucleation/growth parameterizations, higher-resolution meteorological data, and refined local emissions for urban aerosol modeling in subtropical environments.

The Efficacy Of Wetland Treatment Systems Used To Treat Runoff Mixtures From Different Landscapes Across Kentucky, Emily Nottingham
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
The overarching goal was to improve our understanding of the cumulative effect of increased use and occurrence of commonly detected contaminants of potential concern (CPCs) on nitrogen (N) transformation processes in wetlands. The central hypothesis was that those various mixtures of nutrients and CPCs entering treatment wetlands impact N removal pathways. The first study assessed the current state of the literature on the implications to N removal in wetlands in the presence of pesticides and antibiotics. 181 primary studies were identified. Removal efficiencies for nitrate varied widely across the studies, with CPCs impacting microbial communities. A knowledge gap remains in …

Entrepreneurship is a crucial driver of economic growth, necessitating the development of effective entrepreneurial ecosystems. However, there are significant gaps in the literature regarding the structured assessment of these ecosystems. This study addresses three main research gaps: the lack of structured evaluation methods, the need for a comprehensive analysis of ecosystem challenges from various perspectives, and the identification of critical factors essential for ecosystem growth. To bridge these gaps, the research introduces the Hierarchical Decision Model (HDM) as a universal assessment framework that can be adapted to different cities for creating effective entrepreneurial environments. The research methodology involved formulating perspectives …
Performance And Field Testing Of Geotextiles For Dewatering Rare Earth Element Hydraulic Preconcentrate From Hardrock Amd, Ian R. Bird
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
As part of ongoing efforts to develop a domestic Rare Earth Elements (REE) supply chain the Hydraulic Preconcentrate (HPC) produced at the Horseshoe bend treatment plant (HsB) was manufactured and evaluated as a potential source for feedstock. After the existing clarifiers on the site were flipped to the desired pH set points, HPC was manufactured and pumped to 24 geobags. The geobags were then passively dewatered to increase the total solids percentage. Fluorotelomer Carboxylic Acid Degradation: Implications For Septic Systems, Alexis Marie Eaton
Fluorotelomer Carboxylic Acid Degradation: Implications For Septic Systems, Alexis Marie Eaton
Honors Theses and Capstones
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, are a group of manmade organic chemicals that have been widely used since the 1940’s due to their resistance to heat, water, and oil. These compounds are associated with negative health outcomes including poor thyroid function, reproductive toxicity, and carcinogenicity. Because products with PFAS are widely used in residential settings, and because many PFAS do not completely degrade during wastewater treatment/handling, septic systems may be an important non-point source of PFAS to groundwater. Many homes that have septic systems, which discharge wastewater effluent to the subsurface, also use groundwater as a drinking water source; …

Highlighting Opportunities For Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Food Waste From Universities With Pulp And Paper Mill Sludge, Md Nizam Uddin
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The disposal of food waste (FW) in landfills presents significant environmental and economic challenges, including greenhouse gas emissions and loss of potential resources. Concurrently, the pulp and paper industry, a major sector in the United States, generates substantial quantities of recalcitrant organic waste that is high in lignocellulosic content. Anaerobic co-digestion of FW with pulp and paper mill sludge (PPMS) emerges as a potential strategy to address both waste streams simultaneously, potentially enhancing organic matter degradation and biogas yield. However, the efficacy of this co-digestion approach and its broader sustainability implications remain insufficiently characterized. This study employs laboratory-scale experiments to …

Non-ionic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are non-ionic designer solvents with various applications in catalysis, extraction, carbon capture, and pharmaceuticals. However, discovering new DES candidates is challenging due to a lack of efficient tools that accurately predict DES formation. The search for DES relies heavily on intuition or trial-and-error processes, leading to low success rates or missed opportuni- ties. Recognizing that hydrogen bonds (HBs) play a central role in DES formation, we aim to identify HB features that distinguish DES from non-DES systems and use them to develop machine learning (ML) models to discover new DES systems. We first analyze the …
