A Computationally-Efficient Bound For The Variance Of Measuring The Orientation Of Single Molecules, Tingting Wu, Tianben Ding, Hesam Mazidi, Oumeng Zhang, Matthew D. Lew

Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations

Modulating the polarization of excitation light, resolving the polarization of emitted fluorescence, and point spread function (PSF) engineering have been widely leveraged for measuring the orientation of single molecules. Typically, the performance of these techniques is optimized and quantified using the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB), which describes the best possible measurement variance of an unbiased estimator. However, CRB is a local measure and requires exhaustive sampling across the measurement space to fully characterize measurement precision. We develop a global variance upper bound (VUB) for fast quantification and comparison of orientation measurement techniques. Our VUB tightly bounds the diagonal elements of the …

Measuring Localization Confidence For Quantifying Accuracy And Heterogeneity In Single-Molecule Super-Resolution Microscopy, Hesam Mazidi, Tianben Ding, Arye Nehorai, Matthew D. Lew

Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations

We present a computational method, termed Wasserstein-induced flux (WIF), to robustly quantify the accuracy of individual localizations within a single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) dataset without ground- truth knowledge of the sample. WIF relies on the observation that accurate localizations are stable with respect to an arbitrary computational perturbation. Inspired by optimal transport theory, we measure the stability of individual localizations and develop an efficient optimization algorithm to compute WIF. We demonstrate the advantage of WIF in accurately quantifying imaging artifacts in high-density reconstruction of a tubulin network. WIF represents an advance in quantifying systematic errors with unknown and complex distributions, …

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Grazed pastures and cultivated fields are significant sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in particular N2O emissions derived from fertilizer deposition and animal excreta. Net surface emissions rely on subsurface gas transfer controlled mainly by diffusion, expressed as the soil-gas diffusivity (Dp/Do). The value of Dp/Do is a function of soil air-filled porosity (e) and gaseous phase tortuosity (T), both of which vary with soil physical properties including soil texture and structure. Agricultural soils are often structurally aggregated and characterized by two distinct regions (inter- and intra-aggregated pores), however, such soils are subjected to frequent compaction and tillage resulting in …

Chemical Engineering

Desalination of brackish groundwater has great potential to alleviate the problem of the limited water resources in Egypt. In this paper, we studied the desalination of brackish water for irrigation purposes using capacitive deionization (CDI) technology. We investigated a modular unit for use in greenhouses (GH). A GH for the production of tomato requires about 3.2 m3/d of water. The target CDI unit has a production capacity of 32 m3/d for irrigation of 10 greenhouses from brackish water. The paper provides an extensive simulation study to illustrate the influence of various design parameters and to unveil the CDI technology pros …

To prevent that, it is imperative to efficiently monitor the urban underground infrastructure. The combination of sensors system and wireless underground communication system can be used to realize urban underground IoT applications, e.g., storm water and wastewater overflow monitoring systems. The aim of this article is to establish a feasibility of the use of wireless underground communications techniques, and wave propagation through the subsurface soil and asphalt layers, in an underground pavement system for storm water and sewer overflow monitoring application. …

Inhibiting Surface Flashover In Vacuum With High Gradient Insulators, Cameron Harjes Feb 2020

Inhibiting Surface Flashover In Vacuum With High Gradient Insulators, Cameron Harjes

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

In high voltage systems, insulators may be used to separate conductors and these insulators are typically the limiting factor in the system’s operating voltage. When the voltage between two conductors is too large, the insulators can fail due to surface flashover. As systems become more compact, the threat of failure by insulator flashover increases, making the optimization of insulators a critical task for reliability.

Insulators at a vacuum interface are especially vulnerable to surface flashover. Insulators have been shown to holdoff more voltage in vacuum after being baked to remove imbedded surface gases. Ceramic materials are particularly attractive because, unlike …

Probabilistic Hazard Assessment Of Contaminated Sediment In Rivers, Shahab Aldin Shojaeezadeh, Mohammad Reza Nikoo, Ali Mirchi, Iman Mallakpour, Amir Aghakouchak, Mojtaba Sadegh

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We propose a probabilistic framework rooted in multivariate and copula theory to assess heavy metal hazard associated with contaminated sediment in freshwater rivers that provide crucial ecosystem services such as municipal water source, eco-tourism, and agricultural irrigation. Exploiting the dependence structure between suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and different heavy metals, we estimate the hazard probability associated with each heavy metal at different SSC levels. We derive these relationships for warm (spring-summer) and cold (fall-winter) seasons, as well as stormflow condition, to unpack their nonlinear associations under different environmental conditions. To demonstrate its efficacy, we apply our proposed generic framework to …

Physics & Engineering Faculty Publications

Additive manufacturing in tissue engineering has significantly advanced in acceptance and use to address complex problems. However, there are still limitations to the technologies used and potential challenges that need to be addressed by the community. In this manuscript, we describe how the field can be advanced not only through the development of new materials and techniques but also through the standardization of characterization, which in turn may impact the translation potential of the field as it matures. Furthermore, we discuss how education and outreach could be modified to ensure end-users have a better grasp on the benefits and limitations …

Effect Of Nano-Clay Filler On The Thermal Breakdown Mechanism And Lifespan Of Polypropylene Film Under Ac Fields, Chuyan Zhang, Weichen Shi, Qiao Wang, Zhicheng Si, Yankun Yang, Yifan Liao, Fuzeng Zhang, Huseyin R. Hiziroglu

Electrical & Computer Engineering Publications

The wide application of nanocomposites in the insulation system has greatly contributed to the performance improvement of power equipment. However, nano fillers are not omnipotent for improving the properties of composite dielectrics. In some situations, nano-modified materials are in fact a compromise of improving some performance features while sacrificing others. In this work, the breakdown characteristics and time-to-failure of polypropylene film with nano-clay fillers have been evaluated under combined thermal stress and AC electric fields. Experiments on plain polypropylene (PP) samples have also been carried out under the same test conditions as control. Test results indicated that the time-to-failure of …

Understanding Rural Water Services As A Complex System: An Assessment Of Key Factors As Potential Leverage Points For Improved Service Sustainability, Nicholas Valcourt, Jeffrey P. Walters, Amy Javernick-Will, Karl Linden, Betelhem Hailegiorgis

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Rural water supply services worldwide consistently fail to deliver full public health impacts as intended due to a low service sustainability. This failure is increasingly attributed to weak local systems composed of social, financial and environmental factors. Current approaches in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector for understanding and improving these systems typically focus on the strength and capacity of these factors, but not the interactions between them. We contend that these approaches overlook the inherent complexity and context-specific nature of each local system. To assess this complexity, we conducted four participatory factor mapping workshops with local stakeholders across …

Critical Temperature Prediction Of Superconductors Based On Atomic Vectors And Deep Learning, Shaobo Li, Yabo Dan, Xiang Li, Tiantian Hu, Rongzhi Dong, Zhuo Cao, Jianjun Hu

Faculty Publications

In this paper, a hybrid neural network (HNN) that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) is proposed to extract the high-level characteristics of materials for critical temperature (Tc) prediction of superconductors. Firstly, by obtaining 73,452 inorganic compounds from the Materials Project (MP) database and building an atomic environment matrix, we obtained a vector representation (atomic vector) of 87 atoms by singular value decomposition (SVD) of the atomic environment matrix. Then, the obtained atom vector was used to implement the coded representation of the superconductors in the order of the atoms in the chemical …

Dispersion Tuning And Route Reconfiguration Of Acoustic Waves In Valley Topological Phononic Crystals, Zhenhua Tian, Chen Shen, Junfei Li, Eric Reit, Hunter Bachman, Joshua E. S. Socolar, Steven A. Crummer, Tony Jun Huang

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

The valley degree of freedom in crystals offers great potential for manipulating classical waves, however, few studies have investigated valley states with complex wavenumbers, valley states in graded systems, or dispersion tuning for valley states. Here, we present tunable valley phononic crystals (PCs) composed of hybrid channel-cavity cells with three tunable parameters. Our PCs support valley states and Dirac cones with complex wavenumbers. They can be configured to form chirped valley PCs in which edge modes are slowed to zero group velocity states, where the energy at different frequencies accumulates at different designated locations. They enable multiple functionalities, including tuning …

The Heuristic Dynamic Programming Approach In Boost Converters, Sepehr Saadatmand, Pourya Shamsi, Mehdi Ferdowsi Feb 2020

The Heuristic Dynamic Programming Approach In Boost Converters, Sepehr Saadatmand, Pourya Shamsi, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study, a heuristic dynamic programming controller is proposed to control a boost converter. Conventional controllers such as proportional-integral-derivative (PID) or proportional-integral (PI) are designed based on the linearized small-signal model near the operating point. Therefore, the performance of the controller during the start-up, the load change, or the input voltage variation is not optimal since the system model changes by varying the operating point. The heuristic dynamic programming controller optimally controls the boost converter by following the approximate dynamic programming. The advantage of the HDP is that the neural network-based characteristic of the proposed controller enables boost converters …

The Voltage Regulation Of A Buck Converter Using A Neural Network Predictive Controller, Sepehr Saadatmand, Pourya Shamsi, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a neural network predictive controller (NNPC) is proposed to control a buck converter. Conventional controllers such as proportional-integral (PI) or proportional-integral-derivative (PID) are designed based on the linearized small-signal model near the operating point. Therefore, the performance of the controller in the start-up, load change, or reference change is not optimal since the system model changes by changing the operating point. The neural network predictive controller optimally controls the buck converter by following the concept of the traditional model predictive controller. The advantage of the NNPC is that the neural network system identification decreases the inaccuracy of …

Shallow Water Seafloor Geodesy: Gps On An Anchored Spar Buoy, Surui Xie Feb 2020

Shallow Water Seafloor Geodesy: Gps On An Anchored Spar Buoy, Surui Xie

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Measuring seafloor motion in shallow coastal water is challenging due to strong and highly variable oceanographic effects. Such measurements are potentially useful for monitoring near-shore coastal subsidence, subsidence due to petroleum withdrawal, strain accumulation/release processes in marine shelves and submerged volcanoes, and certain fresh water applications, such as volcano deformation in caldera-hosted lakes. I participated in a project to develop a seafloor geodetic system for this environment based on an anchored spar buoy topped by high precision GPS. Orientation of the buoy is measured using a digital compass that provides heading, pitch, and roll information. The combined orientation and GPS …

Removal Of Estrogenic Compounds From Water Via Energy Efficient Sequential Electrocoagulation-Electrooxidation, Emily K. Maher, Kassidy N. O'Malley, Michael Dollhopf, Brooke K. Mayer, Patrick J. Mcnamara Feb 2020

Removal Of Estrogenic Compounds From Water Via Energy Efficient Sequential Electrocoagulation-Electrooxidation, Emily K. Maher, Kassidy N. O'Malley, Michael Dollhopf, Brooke K. Mayer, Patrick J. Mcnamara

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate energy reduction using electrocoagulation (EC) followed by electrooxidation (EO) targeting initial removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) during EC and subsequent removal of estrogenic compounds in EO. EC offers benefits over conventional coagulation such as in situ generation of coagulant but is not practical for removing estrogenic compounds. Advanced oxidation processes, including EO, can effectively remove micropollutants such as estrogenic compounds but are hindered by the presence of bulk organic matter. This study investigated four estrogenic compounds from the U.S. EPA's Contaminant Candidate List: estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), and 17α-ethynylestradiol …

Narrowing The Cognitive Distance Between Engineers And Customers: A Novel Approach, Based On Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping, Byung Sung Yoon

Dissertations and Theses

During concept development, product developers consider product users and their future experience, cost, development and manufacturing efficiency, product function/quality, and differentiation of the product in the market. Development teams often struggle to adequately address all of these considerations, due to the following reasons: (1) Differences in technological and experiential knowledge, methods used, and communication styles that make it difficult for customers/user, marketing, and engineering to communicate effectively. As a result, important factors may not be sufficiently considered. (2) Product design factors, including technological alternatives, functions, features, benefits, and customer value are interdependent: in some cases, customers are willing to sacrifice …

Risk And Cost Assessment Of Nitrate Contamination In Domestic Wells, Pongpun Juntakut, Erin M.K. Haacker, Daniel D. Snow, Chittaranjan Ray

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

This study combines empirical predictive and economics models to estimate the cost of remediation for domestic wells exceeding suggested treatment thresholds for nitrates. A multiple logistic regression model predicted the probability of well contamination by nitrate, and a life cycle costing methodology was used to estimate costs of nitrate contamination in groundwater in two areas of Nebraska. In south-central Nebraska, 37% of wells were estimated to be at risk of exceeding a threshold of 7.5 mg/L as N, and 17% were at risk of exceeding 10 mg/L as N, the legal limit for human consumption in the United States. In …
