Algorithms And Framework For Computing 2-Body Statistics On Graphics Processing Units, Napath Pitaksirianan
Algorithms And Framework For Computing 2-Body Statistics On Graphics Processing Units, Napath Pitaksirianan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Various types of two-body statistics (2-BS) are regarded as essential components of low-level data analysis in scientific database systems. In relational algebraic terms, a 2-BS is essentially a Cartesian product between two datasets (or two instances of the same dataset) followed by a user-defined aggregate. The quadratic complexity of these computations hinders the timely processing of data. Thus using modern parallel hardware has become an obvious solution to meet such challenges. This dissertation presents our recent work in designing and optimizing parallel algorithms for 2-BS computation on Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). The unique architecture, however, provides abundant opportunities for optimizing …

Modelling And Simulation For NoX Emission Concentration Of Scr Denitrification System, Dong Ze, Laiqing Yan
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) denitrification system has the features of non-linearity, large lag and strong disturbance, when the operating condition changes. Based on mutual information (MI) and Kernel-based Orthogonal Projections to Latent Structures (KOPLS), the model for NOx emission concentration is proposed. The time-delay of each input variable is estimated by mutual information, and phase space construction is performed, KOPLS is utilized to modelling. KOPLS shows the merits of strong generalization, nonlinear fitting and anti-noise in the simulation of benchmark datasets. According to field data analysis, RMSE of MI-KOPLS in training and test are reduced by 17% …

Research On Approximate Reference Algorithm Of Svdbn Based On Sliding Window, Haiyang Chen, Chai Bing, Ruilan Wang, Cao Lu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Structure-variable dynamic Bayesian networks (SVDBN) have the special advantage in dealing with the uncertainty of the unstable processes. In order to overcome the disadvantage that the inference algorithms of the SVDBN are unable to apply online, introducing the concepts of SVDBN sliding window and the window width, the online approximate inference mechanism of structure-variable dynamic Bayesian networks based on sliding window is explained, and two online algorithms are proposed, that is the recursive inference algorithm of structure-variable discrete dynamic Bayesian networks (SVDDBN) based on sliding window and the fast inference algorithm of SVDDBN based on sliding window. Experimental simulations …

Monocular Depth Image Mark-Less Pose Estimation Based On Feature Regression, Chen Ying, Shen Li
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Monocular camera mark-less pose estimation system suffers low accuracy, robustness and efficiency due to variety of action, self-occlusion of human body. A method of feature exaction from point clouds was proposed, in which a single-to-multiple (S2M) feature regressor and a joint position regressor were designed to quickly and accurately predict the 3D positions of body joints from a single depth image without any temporal information. Experiment result shows that the estimation accuracy is superior to that of state-of-the-arts and multi-camera based methods.

Human health is affected by indoor air quality. One distinctive aspect of the indoor environment is its very large surface area that acts as a poorly characterized sink and source of gas-phase chemicals. In this work, air-surface interactions of 19 common indoor air contaminants with diverse properties and sources were monitored in a house using fast-response, on-line mass spectrometric and spectroscopic methods. Enhanced-ventilation experiments demonstrate that most of the contaminants reside in the surface reservoirs and not, as expected, in the gas phase. They participate in rapid air-surface partitioning that is much faster than air exchange. Phase distribution calculations are …

Stable Adaptive Control Systems In The Presence Of Unmodeled And Actuator Dynamics, Kadriye Merve Dogan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In adaptive control of physical systems, it is well-known that the presence of actuator and/or unmodeled dynamics in feedback loops can yield to unstable closed-loop system trajectories. Motivated by this standpoint, this dissertation presents novel model reference and distributed adaptive control architectures with stability and performance guarantees for uncertain sole and multiagent dynamical systems with unmodeled and/or actuator dynamics.
Specifically, model reference and distributed adaptive control architectures are powerful theoretical tools for both sole and multiagent systems, where they have the capability to suppress the effect of exogenous disturbances and system uncertainties for achieving a desired level of closed-loop system …

Role Of Nanoparticle–Polymer Interactions On The Development Of Double-Network Hydrogel Nanocomposites With High Mechanical Strength, Andrew Chang, Nasim Babhadiashar, Emma Barrett-Catton, Prashanth Asuri
Bioengineering
Extensive experimental and theoretical research over the past several decades has pursued strategies to develop hydrogels with high mechanical strength. Our study investigated the effect of combining two approaches, addition of nanoparticles and crosslinking two different polymers (to create double-network hydrogels), on the mechanical properties of hydrogels. Our experimental analyses revealed that these orthogonal approaches may be combined to synthesize hydrogel composites with enhanced mechanical properties. However, the enhancement in double network hydrogel elastic modulus due to incorporation of nanoparticles is limited by the ability of the nanoparticles to strongly interact with the polymers in the network. Moreover, double-network hydrogel …

On The Spreading Of Non-Canonical Thermals From Direct Numerical Simulations, Kai Liu, Nadim Zgheib, S. Balachandar
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
We present results from direct numerical simulations on laminar and turbulent non-canonical thermals with an initial rectangular density distribution at a Reynolds number of Re = 500 and Re = 5000, respectively. We find the non-canonical shape to induce strong azimuthal variations in the thermal for both the laminar and turbulent cases. These include noticeable differences in downward and horizontal propagation speeds as well as differences in the strength of the vortex tube. These differences persist over a significant period of time and help generate a cross-flow component that is otherwise not present in canonical cases. The cross-flow component is …

There is an increasing push to make automated systems capable of carrying out tasks which humans perform, such as driving, speech recognition, and anomaly detection. Automated systems, therefore, are increasingly required to respond to unexpected conditions. Two types of unexpected conditions of relevance in the chemical process industries are anomalous conditions and the responses of operators and engineers to controller behavior. Enhancing responsiveness of an advanced control design known as economic model predictive control (EMPC) (which uses predictions of future process behavior to determine an economically optimal manner in which to operate a process) to unexpected conditions of these types …

Microfluidically Reconfigurable Millimeter-Wave Switches, Antenna Arrays And Filters With Fast-Actuation Using Movable Metallized Plates And Integrated Actuation, Enrique J. Gonzalez Carvajal
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Microfluidic reconfiguration of microwave devices has emerged as a potentially attractive alternative to integrated semiconductor (ICs/MMICs) and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based technologies. On the one hand, MMICs suffer from low power handling capabilities, high IL, non-linear effects, and elevated costs; on the other hand, MEMS are limited by their complex packaging requirements, and relatively low reliability from stiction-based effects. However, microfluidic reconfiguration provides low insertion loss (IL) due to its mechanical nature and it is not limited by power saturation effects. These attributes are especially valuable for applications at mm-waves, potentially reducing costs and increasing power efficiency capabilities. Microfluidic reconfiguration …

Numerical Investigation Of Vortex-Induced Vibration Of A Vertical Riser In Uniform Flow At High Reynolds Numbers, Jerónimo Domingo, Luis Pérez-Rojas, H. R. Díaz-Ojeda
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This work presents a numerical study on the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) phenomenon of synchronization of a vertical, flexible, circular cylinder with a length-to-diameter ratio of 475, being free to move along the in-line (IL) and cross-flow (CF) directions for Reynolds numbers of 42K, 84K and 126K. It is found that the dominant mode numbers, the maximum root mean square amplitudes, the dominant frequencies and the lift coefficient increase with the Reynolds number, but the drag coefficient decreases. The in-line response shows a main frequency component at twice the cross-flow frequency. At some Reynolds number value and riser span location, a …

Sensitivity Calculations Of High-Speed Optical Receivers Based On Electron-Apds, Vladimir Shulyak, Majeed M. Hayat, Jo Shien Ng
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Sensitivity of high-speed optical receivers is heavily influenced by the performance of the optical detectors used in the receivers, the data rate, and the target bit-error-rate (BER). A simulation model for sensitivity of optical receivers based on electron-avalanche photodiodes (e-APDs) is presented. It allows for the optimization of avalanche width and operating voltage to achieve the optimum receiver sensitivity for given bit rate and target BER. The effects modelled include inter-symbol interference (ISI), various dark current components (tunnelling, diffusion, and generation), current impulse duration, avalanche gain, and amplifier's noise. The model was demonstrated through simulations of Indium Arsenide (InAs) e-APDs. …
