Development System For Intelligent Surgical Box-Trainer Research, Janos Grantner

Faculty Research and Creative Activities Award (FRACAA)

Laparoscopic surgery, also referred to as minimally invasive surgery, describes the performance of surgical procedures with the assistance of a video camera and several thin surgical instruments. During the surgical procedure, small incisions of up to half an inch are made and plastic tubes called ports are placed through these incisions. The camera and the surgical instruments are then introduced through the ports which allow access to the inside of the patient. The video camera becomes a surgeon's eyes. Excellent eye-hand coordination capabilities are crucial to carry out laparoscopic surgery procedures. Gaining basic laparoscopic skills such as …

Understanding And Optimizing Flash-Based Key-Value Systems In Data Centers, Yichen Jia

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Flash-based key-value systems are widely deployed in today’s data centers for providing high-speed data processing services. These systems deploy flash-friendly data structures, such as slab and Log Structured Merge(LSM) tree, on flash-based Solid State Drives(SSDs) and provide efficient solutions in caching and storage scenarios. With the rapid evolution of data centers, there appear plenty of challenges and opportunities for future optimizations.

In this dissertation, we focus on understanding and optimizing flash-based key-value systems from the perspective of workloads, software, and hardware as data centers evolve. We first propose an on-line compression scheme, called SlimCache, considering the unique characteristics of key-value …

Electro spun poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) fibers are commonly used for tissue engineering applications because of their uniform morphology, and their efficacy can be further enhanced via surface modification. In this study, we aimed to increase neurite outgrowth along electro spun fibers by coating with silk fibroin (SF), a bioinert protein derived from Bombyx mori cocoon threads, shown to be neuro compatible. Aligned PLLA fibers were electro spun with smooth, pitted, and devoted surface nano topographies and coated with SF by immersion in coating solution for either 12 or 24 h. Specifically, thin-film coatings of SF were generated by leveraging the …

A Methodology For Incorporating The Effect Of Grain Size On The Energy Efficiency Coefficient For Fatigue Crack Initiation Estimation In Polycrystalline Metal, Chun-Yu Ou, Rohit Voothaluru, C. Richard Liu Mar 2020

A Methodology For Incorporating The Effect Of Grain Size On The Energy Efficiency Coefficient For Fatigue Crack Initiation Estimation In Polycrystalline Metal, Chun-Yu Ou, Rohit Voothaluru, C. Richard Liu

Purdue University Libraries Open Access Publishing Fund

Estimating fatigue crack initiation of applied loading is challenging due to the large number of individual entities within a microstructure that could affect the accumulation of dislocations. In order to improve the prediction accuracy of fatigue crack initiation models, it is essential to accurately compute the energy dissipated into the microstructure per fatigue loading cycle. The extent of the energy dissipated within the microstructure as a fraction of the overall energy imparted by loading has previously been defined as the ‘energy efficiency coefficient’. This work studied the energy efficiency coefficient as a factor in the measurement of accumulated plastic strain …

Autocorrelation And Probability Distributions In Gait-Metronome Synchronization, Charles Sloan Mar 2020

Autocorrelation And Probability Distributions In Gait-Metronome Synchronization, Charles Sloan

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Recent research has shown that the structure of different pacing signals influences gait dynamics during coordination to those signals. Those studies, however, have not looked at the impact that probability distribution functions play in influencing our gait. This study looks at how both autocorrelation functions and probability distribution has in noisy metronomes to look for sources of synchronization. 10 healthy subjects volunteered to complete this study. The participants were required to wear custom-built glasses with a small screen projected on the lens. The screen showed a visual stimulus that correlated with various signals. The results of the study suggest that …

Effects Of Novel Tool Use: Cortical And Functional Measures In Children Using A Prosthetic Simulator, Chris Copeland

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

As of 2005, there were a total of 1.6 million people living with the loss of a limb, with this population projected to double to 3.6 million by 2050 [1]. While prostheses aim to enhance the function of these individuals, it is estimated that 45% of pediatric prosthetic users reject their prosthesis [2]. The literature which describes the neurological control mechanisms of prosthetic use is sparse and often low-powered due to an inadequate number of participants. However, prosthetic simulators may be a solution to chronically low-powered prosthetic-centric studies by serving as functional homologues, though this has yet to be tested. …

Amino Acid Quantification For Dmc Biotechnologies, Russell Beckerman, Rebecca Hines, Kenya Jacob, Megan Mccabe, Ju Yun Lee

ENGS 89/90 Reports

From pharmaceuticals to biofuels, fermentation bioprocessing has gained traction in many industries reaching a global market value of almost $60 billion in 2018. However, applications of bioprocessing have been limited in scope due to high capital costs, long development times, and difficulties maintaining productivity during scale-up. Furthering development and scale-up of fermentation bioprocesses require careful monitoring and control through analytical chemistry. Currently, there are no small molecule quantification techniques that are sufficiently accurate, inexpensive, and high-throughput. This investigation explores viability of a novel quantification assay for amino acids in fermentation broth leveraging molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs).

The Effect Of Waste Engine Oil And Waste Polyethylene On Uv Aging Resistance Of Asphalt., Chao Peng, Chong Guo, Zhanping You, Fang Xu, Wenbo Ma, Lingyun You, Tianjun Li, Lizhen Zhou, Shifan Huang, Hongchao Ma, Li Lu

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Waste engine oil (WEO) and waste polyethylene (WPE) are two common wastes, which are easy to pollute the environment. As the primary material in road construction, natural asphalt is a non-renewable energy source and asphalt is vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) radiation during the service life. It results in degradation of asphalt pavement performance. In this paper, 22 wt % to 82 wt % of WEO and WPE were used to modify asphalts and the UV aging simulation experiment was carried out. The physical parameters of asphalts before the UV aging experiment show that the asphalt containing 42 wt % WPE …

Inverse Dynamics Analysis Of Youth Pitching Arm Kinetics Using Body Composition Imaging, Jay A. Sterner, Scott K. Reaves, Arnel L. Aguinaldo, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch Mar 2020

Inverse Dynamics Analysis Of Youth Pitching Arm Kinetics Using Body Composition Imaging, Jay A. Sterner, Scott K. Reaves, Arnel L. Aguinaldo, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch

Biomedical Engineering

This study’s objectives were to: (1) assess whether dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-mass inverse dynamics (ID) alters predictions of youth pitching arm kinetics and (2) investigate correlations between kinetics and body composition. Eighteen 10- to 11-year-olds pitched 10 fastballs. DXA scans were conducted to obtain participant-specific upper arm, forearm, and hand masses. Pitching arm segment masses and kinetics calculated with scaled and DXA masses were compared with paired t-tests and correlations were investigated with linear regression. Hand (p < 0.001) and upper arm (p < 0.001) DXA masses were greater, while forearm (p < 0.001) DXA masses were lesser, than their scaled masses. Shoulder compressive force (p < 0.001), internal rotation torque (p < 0.001), and horizontal adduction torque (p = 0.002) increased when using DXA masses. Shoulder compressive force correlated with body mass (p < 0.001) and body mass index (BMI; p = 0.002) and elbow varus torque correlated with body mass (p < 0.05). The main conclusions were that (1) using participant-specific mass ratios leads to different predictions of injury-related pitching arm kinetics and, thus, may improve our understanding of injury risk factors; and (2) pitching arm kinetics were correlated with body composition measures and a relatively high total body mass and/or BMI may increase shoulder and/or elbow injury risk.

Tribological And Thermal Transport Of Ag-Vegetable Nanofluids Prepared By Laser Ablation, Jaime Taha-Tijerina, Sadasivan Shaji, Sreed Sharma Kanakkillam, Maria Isabel Mendivil Palma, Karla Aviña

Informatics and Engineering Systems Faculty Publications

Lubricants and fluids are critical for metal-mechanic manufacturing operations as they reduce the friction and wear of tooling and components, and serve as coolants to dissipate the heat generated in these operations. The proper application of these materials improves machine operative life and tooling, and decreases cost, energy, and time consumption for maintenance, damage, repairs, or the need to exchange pieces/components within the machinery. Natural or vegetable-based lubricants have emerged as a substitute for mineral oils, which harm the environment due to their low biodegradability and have negative effects on human health (e.g., causing skin/respiratory diseases). Thus, finding biocompatible and …

Rotary Oscillation Of A Rigid Sphere In A Couple Stress Fluid, Tarek Shehadeh, Emad Ashmawy Mar 2020

Rotary Oscillation Of A Rigid Sphere In A Couple Stress Fluid, Tarek Shehadeh, Emad Ashmawy

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

In this paper, the rotary oscillation of a rigid sphere in an incompressible couple stress fluid is studied. The classical no slip boundary conditions are imposed on spherical boundary. Moreover, it is assumed that the couple stresses on the boundary of the sphere vanish. In the present study, the motion is generated by a sudden rotary oscillation of the rigid sphere about an axe passing through its center with a time-dependent angular velocity. Stokasian assumption is taken into consideration so that the non-linear terms are neglected in the equation of motion. The torque experienced by the couple stress fluid on …
