Cataloging The Degree Of Sensitization Via Electrochemical Reactivation For Studying The Corrosion Behavior Of Inconel 718, Austenitic, And Duplex Stainless Steels, Bradley Lynes

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Corrosion resistant materials can be expensive, but usually reduce the life cycle cost of metallic assets. However, negligent sensitization of these materials can lead to aggressive, intergranular corrosion. Using the methodology of the double loop electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (DL-EPR), this project investigates different steel reinforced bars and Inconel to determine the degree of sensitization after a heat treatment of 900°C for 2 hours. The purpose of this research is to validate and determine the appropriate test parameters for performing further DL-EPR test in the future. Additionally, the kinetics observed for each sample during the DL-EPR test will be analyzed and …

The Smartbobber, Zachary Pyle, Nick Spoutz, Zachary Hutson, Ryan Pascal

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In short, the fishing bobber connects to a smartphone app (also designed by members on the team) to notify the user of fish bite data via Bluetooth connection. Additionally, the smartBobber is able to set the hook on fish autonomously and alert the user when it does so. This is possible by the use of a linear solenoid that is spring loaded. Circuitry on the bobber detects the pull distance on the plunger of the solenoid and transmits this data to the user in real time. Once the solenoid has passed a certain pull threshold, the solenoid completes a 12V …

Developing A Portable Prototype To Utilize An Electrospun Colorimetric Sensor For The Detection Of Trihalomethanes In Water, Amanda Svensson

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Trihalomethane (THM) detection in water is important due to the potential health effects caused by their presence, including increased cancer risk. A cheap, quick, and portable method of identifying THM concentration at the Environmental Protection Agency limit of 80 parts per billion (ppb) will improve detection and water treatment. Electrospinning was used to make nanofiber membranes using a 2.6 wt% polypropylene solution. These membranes were utilized in the Fujiwara reaction, which creates a color change in the presence of THMs, to detect the THM bromoform in water. The color intensity of the reaction was quantified for 250 and 80 ppb …

Stress Corrosion Cracking Of Stainless-Steel Reinforced Concrete, Nathan Frye Jan 2019

Stress Corrosion Cracking Of Stainless-Steel Reinforced Concrete, Nathan Frye

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Stainless steel rebar is one of the most corrosion resistant reinforcing methods for concrete structures. Stainless steel is used for its chromium content and its ability to form a passive oxide corrosion resistant layer. The presence of chloride is one of the largest attackers of this passive film and able to penetrate concrete due to its porous characteristics. This study evaluates the mechanical performance of different stainless steels relative to their changing environments. It is expected that as chloride concentration values increase, mechanical properties will decrease. This will be tested by performing tensile tests on stainless steel rebar sample that …

Effects Of Hofmeister Ions On Transition Temperature Of Two Thermo-Responsive Polymers, Joshua Moser Jan 2019

Effects Of Hofmeister Ions On Transition Temperature Of Two Thermo-Responsive Polymers, Joshua Moser

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

It was hypothesized that through the use of Hofmeister Ions, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) and poly(ethylene glycol)- poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PEG-b-pNIPAAm) block-copolymer could be controlled. Through literature searches and small lab experiments, our team found that there may be a connection between Hofmeister effects and phase transition of a thermo-responsive polymer. To try and prove this, the lab team decided to take four cations (Mg2+,Na+, Cs+, K+) in solution with the thermo-responsive polymers and compared their LCST to solutions of the thermo-responsive polymer in de-ionized …

Hydro-Aeroponic Design, Megan J. Doll, Nathan J. Boring, Meredith B. Taylor, Chancelor L. Sunkle

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

“Aeroponics” is a plant cultivation technique where roots hang suspended in the air while the nutrient solution is delivered in the form of a fine mist. NASA has done experiments in space and found out that plants grow very well with aeroponic technology. However, “Hydroponics” is the most preferred method, where plants are grown in a non-soil medium, and mostly in nutrient liquid that flows through rectangular channels. There are advantages and disadvantages to each system. With the intention of combining the efficiency of aeroponics and the compactness of hydroponics, a hydro-aeroponic system was created to grow spinach and lettuce. …

Due to this variety, SES has requested a coil car that can easily be manipulated and produced …

Artificial Intelligence Of Stormwater Operations, Eric Bednar Jan 2019

Artificial Intelligence Of Stormwater Operations, Eric Bednar

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The current infrastructure in our country will not be able to adequately support the growing demands of an exponentially increasing population. A rise in population contributes to a greater service demand necessary to treat sanitary sewer waste which in many cases contributes to the flow of combined sewers. When it comes to managing these combined sewers, rain and the snowmelt caused from climate changes are major factors that need to be addressed. Some water treatment facilities do not have the ability to treat the capacities or peak flows that a system experiences, resulting in combined sewer overflows which are both …

Requalification Of Coated Fabrics Using Chemlok 2332 In Place Of Chemlok 233, Daniel Madler

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Rubber coated fabrics are an essential component in the deicing systems of the aerospace industry. Adhesives cements are applied to a fabric prior to being pressed into a rubber compound that will adhere to the fabric. The resulting fabric maintains the strength of the fabric with the added benefits of elasticity and compatibility from the rubber compound. UTC Aerospace Systems relies on these coated fabrics to create safe deicers for the aerospace industry. Chemlok 233, a now obsolete primer cement, was used extensively in the coated fabrics used by UTC. Materials testing and performance evaluation allowed for a replacement cement, …

Theoretical Study Of Fano Resonance In A Mechanical System, Alex Alberts Jan 2019

Theoretical Study Of Fano Resonance In A Mechanical System, Alex Alberts

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Resonance conditions are a major area of study in theoretical and experimental investigation. Normally, a resonance condition is characterized by a symmetric shape on either side of the resonance. In some cases, we can observe an asymmetric resonance shape, which is called a Fano resonance. We will study the appearance of Fano resonance in a purely mechanical system. The frequency response of the primary system is approximated using the method of multiple scales focusing on the location of the resonance condition. Then, curve fitting is used to approximate the Fano parameter associated with the system, which provides a measurement of …
