Learning Models For Corrupted Multi-Dimensional Data: Fundamental Limits And Algorithms, Ishan Jindal
Learning Models For Corrupted Multi-Dimensional Data: Fundamental Limits And Algorithms, Ishan Jindal
Wayne State University Dissertations
Developing machine learning models for unstructured multi-dimensional datasets such as datasets with unreliable labels and noisy multi-dimensional signals with or without missing information have becoming a central necessity. We are not always fortunate enough to get noise-free datasets for developing classification and representation models. Though there is a number of techniques available to deal with noisy datasets, these methods do not exploit the multi-dimensional structures of the signals, which could be used to improve the overall classification and representation performance of the model.
In this thesis, we develop a Kronecker-structure (K-S) subspace model that exploits the multi-dimensional structure of the …

Utilizing Immunopet To Measure Tumor Response To Treatment In Breast Cancer, Brooke Mcknight
Wayne State University Dissertations
With a broad spectrum of therapies available for treating breast cancer, the need for personalized medicine tailoring the cure according to phenotype is evident. Such an approach may be fully realized with the development of quantitative imaging technologies for disease detection, staging and diagnosis, without increasing patient burden. Immuno-positron emission tomography (PET) combines the targeted specificity of antibodies with the sensitivity of PET for whole body imaging by targeting molecular features amplified in lesions. ImmunoPET probes targeting different antigens and their utility to measure response to treatment were explored. 89Zr-trastuzumab was employed as a surrogate readout of Src inhibition after …

Automatic Resource Management And Performance Optimization In Clusters, Yudi Wei
Wayne State University Dissertations
Virtual machine is a primary way to increase resource utilizations in data centers by encapsulating multi-resource demands for applications and providing performance isolation. Moreover, the resource configuration can change on the fly to satisfy performance target. Container is another popular way for fine-grained multi-resource allocation. In this disser- tation work, we aim to design and implement an automatic resource management system to improve application performance, optimize system efficiency and job completion times in virtual and physical clusters respectively.
For large-scale applications hosted in data center, automatic resource configuration is crucial to service availability and quality. The workload dynamics, cloud dynamics …
Post-Earthquake Assessment And Numerical Modeling Of Freestanding Heritage Structures, M. Khalid Saifullah, Christine E. Wittich
Post-Earthquake Assessment And Numerical Modeling Of Freestanding Heritage Structures, M. Khalid Saifullah, Christine E. Wittich
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Historic and heritage structures are particularly vulnerable to earthquakes, where damage or collapse can not only lead to loss of a structure but also the loss of irreplaceable heritage. Many heritage structures can be classified as freestanding (detached) structures, including unreinforced masonry walls, classical multi-drum columns, and statue-pedestal systems. However, the seismic response of freestanding structures (sliding, rocking, rock-slide, overturning) is poorly predicted by existing methods due to geometric non-linearities as well as sensitivity to interface conditions and modeling parameters. Previous studies have focused on analytical modeling of simplified systems and/or experimentation under controlled laboratory conditions. In contrast, this paper …

This paper discusses the quantitative post-fire damage assessment of a steel girder bridge via point clouds. In this case study, the point cloud was collected using light detection and ranging (lidar) for a detailed geometric and shape analysis. The out-of-plane deformation was analyzed to locate and quantify buckling across the length of the steel girders.
Efficient Intensity Measures Of Slide-Rocking Structures For Precariously Balanced Rocks, Taylor J. Knickerbocker, Christine E. Wittich
Efficient Intensity Measures Of Slide-Rocking Structures For Precariously Balanced Rocks, Taylor J. Knickerbocker, Christine E. Wittich
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Precariously balanced rocks (PBRs) and other fragile geologic features are important in both the engineering and seismological communities since they are indicative of the maximum ground motion at a site over the rock’s lifetime. Precariously balanced rocks are individual or stacks of freestanding rocks that tend to respond in rigid body modes when subject to seismic excitation – namely, rocking, sliding, slide-rocking, and free-flight, which can lead to overturning. The seismic response of freestanding structures, such as PBRs, is known to be extremely sensitive to small changes in geometry, position, and earthquake excitation. As such, deterministic methods are limited in …
Design And Investigation Of Genetic Algorithmic And Reinforcement Learning Approaches To Wire Crossing Reductions For Pnml Devices, Alexander Keith Gunter
Design And Investigation Of Genetic Algorithmic And Reinforcement Learning Approaches To Wire Crossing Reductions For Pnml Devices, Alexander Keith Gunter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Perpendicular nanomagnet logic (pNML) is an emerging post-CMOS technology which encodes binary data in the polarization of single-domain nanomagnets and performs operations via fringing field interactions. Currently, there is no complete top-down workflow for pNML. Researchers must instead simultaneously handle place-and-route, timing, and logic minimization by hand. These tasks include multiple NP-Hard subproblems, and the lack of automated tools for solving them for pNML precludes the design of large-scale pNML circuits.

Evaluating The Use Of Suas-Derived Imagery For Monitoring Flood Protection Infrastructure, Eleanor Mei Dietz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the US there are approximately 33,000 miles of levees. This includes 14,500 miles of levee systems associated with US Army Corps of Engineers programs and approximately 15,000 miles from other state and federal agencies. More than 14 million people live behind levees and associated flood prevention infrastructure. Monitoring and risk assessment are an on-going process, especially during times of flood conditions. The city of New Orleans was heavily impacted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 by storm surges and intense rainfall. The impact of the hurricane was substantial enough to cause levee failure and I-wall toppling where many of the …
Raptor Codes For Biawgn Channel: Snr Mismatch And The Optimality Of The Inner And Outer Rates, Hussein Fadhel
Raptor Codes For Biawgn Channel: Snr Mismatch And The Optimality Of The Inner And Outer Rates, Hussein Fadhel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fountain codes are a class of rateless codes with two interesting properties, first, they can generate potentially limitless numbers of encoded symbols given a finite set of source symbols, and second, the source symbols can be recovered from any subset of encoded symbols with cardinality greater than the number of source symbols. Raptor codes are the first implementation of fountain codes with linear complexity and vanishing error floors on noisy channels. Raptor codes are designed by the serial concatenation of an inner Luby trans-form (LT) code, the first practical realization of fountain codes, and an outer low-density parity-check (LDPC) code. …
Magnetic Amphiphiles And Their Potential Applications For Low Energy Separations Processes, Alexander Fortenberry
Magnetic Amphiphiles And Their Potential Applications For Low Energy Separations Processes, Alexander Fortenberry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Predicting the behavior of magnetic surfactants in magnetic fields is critical for designing magnetically driven processes such as chemical separations or the tuning of surface tensions. Our work supports the hypothesis that the ability of magnetic fields to alter the interfacial properties of magnetic surfactant solutions depends on the strength of association between the magnetic and surfactant moieties of the surfactant molecules. Our research shows that the stability of a magnetic surfactant in an aqueous environment is dependent upon the type of complex that contains the paramagnetic element and these findings provide valuable insight for the design of magnetic surfactants …
Investigative Study Of Poly(Ionic) Liquid Incorporation In Resin Wafer Electrodeionization For Improved Specific Energy Consumption, Angela Fasuyi
Investigative Study Of Poly(Ionic) Liquid Incorporation In Resin Wafer Electrodeionization For Improved Specific Energy Consumption, Angela Fasuyi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An electrokinetic separation method known as Resin Wafer Electrodeionization (RW-EDI) is recognized as a promising technology for energy efficient desalination of brackish water. However RW-EDI is limited by an inherent drawback of its ion exchange media that prevents the largescale deployment of this technology. This research was undertaken to optimize the conventional resin wafer used in RW-EDI through the incorporation of high conducting polyionic liquids (PILs). It was hypothesized that by the changing non-conducting polyethylene binder with a PIL binder in conventional resin wafer configurations ion conductivity within the resin bed would be enhanced and could lead to an improvement …

Falling from elevated surfaces is the main cause of death and injury at construction sites. Based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports, an average of nearly three workers per day suffer fatal injuries from falling. Studies show that postural instability is the foremost cause of this disproportional falling rate. To study what affects the postural stability of construction workers, we conducted a series of experiments in the virtual reality (VR). Twelve healthy adults—all students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln—were recruited for this study. During each trial, participants’ heart rates and postural sways were measured as the dependent factors. …

Prediction Of Stress Increase At Ultimate In Unbonded Tendons Using Sparse Principal Component Analysis, Eric Mckinney, Minwoo Chang, Marc Maguire, Yan Sun
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
While internal and external unbonded tendons are widely utilized in concrete structures, an analytical solution for the increase in unbonded tendon stress at ultimate strength, ∆fps, is challenging due to the lack of bond between strand and concrete. Moreover, most analysis methods do not provide high correlation due to the limited available test data. The aim of this paper is to use advanced statistical techniques to develop a solution to the unbonded strand stress increase problem, which phenomenological models by themselves have done poorly. In this paper, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Sparse Principal Component Analysis (SPCA) …

Small unmanned aerial system(s) (sUAS) are rapidly emerging as a practical means of performing bridge inspections. Under the right condition, sUAS assisted inspections can be safer, faster, and less costly than manned inspections. Many Departments of Transportation in the United States are in the early stages of adopting this emerging technology. However, definitive guidelines for the selection of equipment for various types of bridge inspections or for the possible challenges during sUAS assisted inspections are absent. Given the large investments of time and capital associated with deploying a sUAS assisted bridge inspection program, a synthesis of authors experiences will be …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of A Novel Adsorption Bed Design For Cooling Applications, Ramy H. Mohammed
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A global challenge is to develop environmentally friendly, affordable, compact and sustainable technologies to provide heating and cooling power. Adsorption cooling (AC) technology is one of the most promising ways to solve the environmental issues and cut down the energy consumption related to the traditional air conditioning and refrigeration systems. However, AC systems still suffer from poor heat and mass transfer inside the adsorption bed, which is the main obstacle to commercialization of adsorption cooling units. The main goal of this study is designing an efficient adsorption cooling cycle. In this research work, an in-depth scaling analysis of heat and …
Ultra-High Performance Concrete For Precast Seismic Bridge Column Connection, Titchenda Chan
Ultra-High Performance Concrete For Precast Seismic Bridge Column Connection, Titchenda Chan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Accelerated bridge construction (ABC) utilizes prefabricated bridge elements constructed off-site, delivered, and assembled on-site to expedite construction time and reduce traffic disruption. ABC has been increasingly used for super- and sub-structure elements in low seismic regions. However, its application in medium and high seismic regions remain limited, particularly for precast columns where connections typically coincide with plastic hinge (PH) regions. Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), characterized by high compressive and tensile strength, and superior bond properties, is a potential material that can mitigate PH damage and enhance load transfer. This research proposes a new and simple damage tolerant precast column connection …

Broadband Mid-Infrared Frequency Combs Generated Via Frequency Division, Qitian Ru
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Frequency combs have revolutionized metrology and demonstrated numerous applications in science and technology. Combs operating in the mid-infrared region could be beneficial for molecular spectroscopy for several reasons. First, numerous molecules have their spectroscopic signatures in this region. Furthermore, the atmospheric window (3-5μm and 8-14μm) is located here. Additionally, a mid-infrared frequency comb could be employed as a diagnostic tool for the many components of human breath, as well as for detection of harmful gases and contaminants in the atmosphere. In this thesis, I used synchronously pumped subharmonic optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) operating at degeneracy to produce ultra-broadband outputs near …

Investigation Of Ps-Pvd And Eb-Pvd Thermal Barrier Coatings Over Lifetime Using Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction, Matthew Northam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Extreme operating temperatures within the turbine section of jet engines require sophisticated methods of cooling and material protection. Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) achieve this through a ceramic coating applied to a substrate material (nickel-based superalloy). Electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD) is the industry standard coating used on jet engines. By tailoring the microstructure of an emerging deposition method, Plasma-spray physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD), similar microstructures to that of EB-PVD coatings can be fabricated, allowing the benefits of strain tolerance to be obtained while improving coating deposition times. This work investigates the strain through depth of uncycled and cycled samples using …

Hurricane Imaging Radiometer (Hirad) Tropical Rainfall Retrievals, Abdusalam Alasgah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Hurricane Imaging Radiometer (HIRAD) is an airborne passive microwave remote sensor, developed to measure wind speed and rain rate in hurricanes. This dissertation concerns the development of a signal processing algorithm to infer tropical rainfall from HIRAD radiance (brightness temperature, Tb) measurements. The basis of the rain rate retrieval algorithm is an improved forward microwave radiative transfer model (RTM) that incorporates the HIRAD multi-antenna-beam geometry, and uses semi-empirical coefficients derived from an airborne experiment that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico off Tampa Bay in 2013. During this flight, HIRAD observed a squall line of thunderstorms simultaneously with an …
Artificial Magnetism And Topological Phenomena In Optics, Midya Parto
Artificial Magnetism And Topological Phenomena In Optics, Midya Parto
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent years have witnessed intense research activities to effectively control the flow of photons using various classes of optical structures such as photonic crystals and metamaterials. In this regard, optics has benefited from concepts in condensed matter and solid-state physics, where similar problems concerning electronic wavefunctions arise. An important example of such correspondence is associated with the photon dynamics under the effect of an artificial magnetic field. This is especially important since photons, as neutral bosons, do not inherently interact with magnetic fields. One way to mitigate this issue is to exploit magneto-optical materials. However, as is well known, using …

Optical nanostructures are heterogeneous media containing subwavelength inclusions in periodic or aperiodic fashion. The optical properties of optical nanostructure can be controlled and tuned using their constituent material properties and spatial arrangement of the inclusions. While optical nanostructures have been widely studied, controllable and tunable nanostructures using low loss transparent materials has not been studied in detail in the literature. The objective of this research is to perform efficient design and analyses of controllable and tunable optical nanostructures using low loss transparent materials.
To that end, versatile and highly accurate numerical methods like finite different tie domain and plane wave …
Distributed Optimal Power And Voltage Management In Dc Microgrids, Eyad A. Sindi
Distributed Optimal Power And Voltage Management In Dc Microgrids, Eyad A. Sindi
Wayne State University Dissertations
The work developed new control strategies to address fundamental issues of power balance, line loss reduction, and voltage profile management in DC microgrids. In microgrids of distributed renewable generations and controllable loads, load allocation to different distributed generators, line losses, voltage stability and quality are intimately coupled, departing significantly from traditional power grids in which economic dispatch and voltage stability are typically separate control tasks.
In this work, a multi-objective optimization strategy is introduced to address the challenges imposed by these coupled issues. Global optimal solutions are derived. Recursive optimization algorithms for distributed control strategies are introduced and shown to …

The Effect Of Experiential Education On Pilots' Vfr Into Imc Decision-Making, Geoffrey R. Whitehurst, Lori Brown, William G. Rantz, Dominic Nicolai, Jessica M. Bradley
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
In aviation, safety is always a primary consideration, and this is especially true during a pilot’s flight training to instill that safety mentality. However, this means that pilots are restricted by safety policies from encountering difficult weather situations during their training, which could, potentially, improve their weather decision-making skills for avoiding future hazardous weather encounters. Thirty-six general aviation pilots of varying instrument flight experience (IF) were allocated, using stratified random sampling based on their IF, to one of three groups, a control group and two educational treatment intervention groups. The educational treatment interventions were designed to improve the participant’s ability …

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications
Thermotoga maritima is an anaerobic hyperthermophilic bacterium known for its high amounts of hydrogen (H2) production. In the current study, the kinetic modeling was applied on the engineered strains of T. maritima that surpassed the natural H2 production limit. The study generated a kinetic model explaining H2 overproduction and predicted a continuous fermentation system. A Leudking-Piret equation-based model predicted that H2 production by Tma200 (0.217 mol-H2 g–1-biomass) and Tma100 (0.147 mol-H2 g–1-biomass) were higher than wild type (0.096 mol-H2 g–1 -biomass) with reduced rates of maltose utilization. …
