Carbonation In Alternative Cementitious Materials: Implications On Durability And Mechanical Properties, Prasanth Alapati, Kimberly E. Kurtis Dr.
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Understanding the rate and implications of carbonation on strength and durability in alternative cementitious materials (ACMs) is critical in designing ‘green’ concretes for intended service lives. In this paper, three commercially available ACMs, including one calcium aluminate cement (CAC), one calcium sulfoaluminate belite cement (CSA), and one alkali-activated binder using class C fly ash (AA), were evaluated against one portland cement (OPC). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were used to understand the effect of carbonation on ACM paste composition. Water sorption tests on both carbonated and uncarbonated cement mortar showed a significant reduction in porosity of this …

Dynamic DNA nanodevices are designed to perform structure‐encoded motion actuated by a variety of different physicochemical stimuli. In this context, hybrid devices utilizing other components than DNA have the potential to considerably expand the library of functionalities. Here, the reversible reconfiguration of a DNA origami structure using the stimulus sensitivity of elastin‐like polypeptides is reported. To this end, a rectangular sheet made using the DNA origami technique is functionalized with these peptides and by applying changes in salt concentration the hydrophilic–hydrophobic phase transition of these peptides actuate the folding of the structure. The on‐demand and reversible switching of the rectangle …

Three Dimensional Object Detection Approaches For Indoor Navigation Aid, Junxiu Zhou
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation aims to develop object detection approaches for an indoor navigation aid called smart cane. The goal of the object detection approaches is to provide object-level information of the environment to assist the visually impaired people to walk freely in the indoor environment. Although many object detection approaches have been proposed, object detection is still a challenging problem due to a large number of object categories, viewpoint changes, occlusions, cluttered backgrounds, etc. To address these challenges, first, an indoor 3D dataset is collected by using the smart cane navigation aid. Second, indoor objects are broadly divided into two types: …

An Investigation Of High-Speed Consolidation And Repair Of Carbon Fiber - Epoxy Composites Through Ultrasonic Welding, David A. Hoskins
An Investigation Of High-Speed Consolidation And Repair Of Carbon Fiber - Epoxy Composites Through Ultrasonic Welding, David A. Hoskins
LSU Master's Theses
Adhesive repair of carbon fiber composite structures is commonly done on damaged structures to extend the service life. This method requires careful preparation of the damaged surface with intricate steps to ensure good bonding between the repair patch and the parent structure by means of an adhesive film. As with many forms of composite manufacturing, it is required to perform vacuum bagging, debulking, and a heated cure depending on the resin. All these steps make the repair process costly and time consuming.
In this present work, an alternative method of repair is investigated which explores the experimental feasibility of using …

Faculty Publications
The chemical percolation devolatilization (CPD) model for coal pyrolysis was first published in 1989, and a completed version that included the vapor–liquid equilibrium model and cross-linking model was published in 1992. The CPD model was one of three pyrolysis models developed using a lattice model to account for the chemical structure of the coal and was directly based on solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the coal structure. A correlation of coal structure parameters measured by NMR spectroscopy was performed to permit use of the CPD model to determine pyrolysis rates and yields of tars and light …

Impact Of Chemical Compositions On Mechanical Properties Of Modified Asphalt Binders, Mohammad Nazmul Hassan
Student Theses and Dissertations
Modified asphalt binders offer better mechanical performance in field conditions. According to many researchers, nanoclay modified asphalt binders can be a cheaper alternative of currently practiced polymer modified binders. The primary purpose of this study was to observe any changes in asphalt chemistries due to nanoclay modification and explore any correlations that may exist between chemical compositions and mechanical properties. Changes in chemical fractions were found to be source variant. Insoluble Asphaltene contents were observed to increase significantly after aging, whereas the Saturate contents decreased. Correlations were observed between mechanistic properties and chemical compositions. Moreover, aggregate-binder compatibility evaluation showed nanoclay …
Cooperative Navigation Of Fixed-Wing Micro Air Vehicles In Gps-Denied Environments, Gary James Ellingson
Cooperative Navigation Of Fixed-Wing Micro Air Vehicles In Gps-Denied Environments, Gary James Ellingson
Theses and Dissertations
Micro air vehicles have recently gained popularity due to their potential as autonomous systems. Their future impact, however, will depend in part on how well they can navigate in GPS-denied and GPS-degraded environments. In response to this need, this dissertation investigates a potential solution for GPS-denied operations called relative navigation. The method utilizes keyframe-to-keyframe odometry estimates and their covariances in a global back end that represents the global state as a pose graph. The back end is able to effectively represent nonlinear uncertainties and incorporate opportunistic global constraints. The GPS-denied research community has, for the most part, neglected to consider …

Towards Overcoming The Curse Of Dimensionality: The Third-Order Adjoint Method For Sensitivity Analysis Of Response-Coupled Linear Forward/Adjoint Systems, Uncertainty Quantification And Predictive Modeling With Applications To Nuclear Energy Systems, Dan Gabriel Cacuci
Faculty Publications
This work presents the Third-Order Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology (3rd-ASAM) for response-coupled forward and adjoint linear systems. The 3rd-ASAM enables the efficient computation of the exact expressions of the 3rd-order functional derivatives (“sensitivities”) of a general system response, which depends on both the forward and adjoint state functions, with respect to all of the parameters underlying the respective forward and adjoint systems. Such responses are often encountered when representing mathematically detector responses and reaction rates in reactor physics problems. The 3rd-ASAM extends the 2nd-ASAM in the quest to overcome the “curse of dimensionality” in sensitivity analysis, uncertainty quantification and predictive …

Porous Radiative Cooling Paint For Building Thermal Management, Yuan Yang
Energy Harvesting from Infrastructure and Ocean Systems (EHIOS)
Surface coating with high solar reflectance and high thermal emittance are attractive for saving energy in buildings. Conventional paints typically have a solar reflactance < 93% due to UV and near infrared absorption. Here we demonstrate a porous PVdF copolymer surface coating that shows high solar reflectance of over 96% and high thermal emittance of 0.97. When it is placed under sunlight, it can be 6 oC cooler than the environment without any electricity.

On I/O Performance And Cost Efficiency Of Cloud Storage: A Client's Perspective, Binbing Hou
On I/O Performance And Cost Efficiency Of Cloud Storage: A Client's Perspective, Binbing Hou
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Cloud storage has gained increasing popularity in the past few years. In cloud storage, data are stored in the service provider’s data centers; users access data via the network and pay the fees based on the service usage. For such a new storage model, our prior wisdom and optimization schemes on conventional storage may not remain valid nor applicable to the emerging cloud storage.
In this dissertation, we focus on understanding and optimizing the I/O performance and cost efficiency of cloud storage from a client’s perspective. We first conduct a comprehensive study to gain insight into the I/O performance behaviors …

Effects Of Reservoir Conditions And Trace Co-Contaminant Gases On Geological Carbon Sequestration, Ram Kumar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Geological carbon sequestration in a saline formation is a promising technology for large-scale carbon dioxide (CO2) mitigation. Several factors such as temperature, pressure, salinity, hydraulic conductivity, and mineralogy of a formation affect the CO2 sequestration in saline formations. These factors can vary widely depending upon the type of formation or the degree of heterogeneity within a formation. In addition to these properties of the repositories, the CO2-rich flue gas streams captured from point sources often contains small amounts of impurities such as sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which may have serious implications on the chemistry of the repositories …

Automated Dynamic Detection Of Self-Hiding Behaviors, Luke Baird
Student Works
Certain Android applications, such as but not limited to malware, conceal their presence from the user, exhibiting a self-hiding behavior. Consequently, these apps put the user’s security and privacy at risk by performing tasks without the user’s awareness. Static analysis has been used to analyze apps for self-hiding behavior, but this approach is prone to false positives and suffers from code obfuscation. This research proposes a set of three tools utilizing a dynamic analysis method of detecting self-hiding behavior of an app in the home, installed, and running application lists on an Android emulator. Our approach proves both highly accurate …

Use Of Neural Networks To Identify Safety Prevention Priorities In Agro-Manufacturing Operations Within Commercial Grain Elevators, Fatemeh Davoudi Kakhki, Steven Freeman, Gretchen Mosher
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The grain handling industry plays a significant role in U.S. agriculture by storing, distributing, and processing a variety of agricultural commodities. Commercial grain elevators are hazardous agro-manufacturing work environments where workers are prone to severe injuries, due to the nature of the activities and workplace. Safety incidents in agro-manufacturing operations generally arise from a combination of factors, rather than a single cause, therefore, research on occupational incidents must look deeper into identifying the underlying causes, through the application of advanced analyses methods. In occupational safety, it is possible to estimate and predict probability of safety risks through developing artificial neural …

A Co-Optimal Coverage Path Planning Method For Aerial Scanning Of Complex Structures, Zhexiong Shang, Justin Bradley, Zhigang Shen
Department of Construction Engineering and Management: Faculty Publications
The utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in survey and inspection of civil infrastructure has been growing rapidly. However, computationally efficient solvers that find optimal flight paths while ensuring high-quality data acquisition of the complete 3D structure remains a difficult problem. Existing solvers typically prioritize efficient flight paths, or coverage, or reducing computational complexity of the algorithm – but these objectives are not co-optimized holistically. In this work we introduce a co-optimal coverage path planning (CCPP) method that simultaneously co-optimizes the UAV path, the quality of the captured images, and reducing computational complexity of the solver all while adhering to …
