Equivalent Electron Fluence For Space Qualification Of Shallow Junction Heteroface Gaas Solar Cells, John W. Wilson, L. V. Stock Jan 1984

Equivalent Electron Fluence For Space Qualification Of Shallow Junction Heteroface Gaas Solar Cells, John W. Wilson, L. V. Stock

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is desirable to perform qualification tests prior to deployment of solar cells in space power applications. Such test procedures are complicated by the complex mixture of differing radiation components in space which are difficult to simulate in ground test facilities. Although it has been shown that an equivalent electron fluence ratio cannot be uniquely defined for monoenergetic proton exposure of GaAs shallow junction cells, an equivalent electron fluence test can be defined for common spectral components of protons found in space. Equivalent electron fluence levels for the geosynchronous environment are presented.

The SMEMAX Transformation was tested on samples generated from log-Pearson Type III and Gumbel Extreme Value Type 1 distributions. Although the transformation results in a distribution with a skew near zero, it is not a true normal distribution. The coefficients of kurtosis for the transformed distributions are always less than three and when the parent distribution approaches a reverse-J shape, the transformed distribution is bimodal. When the skew coefficient of the logarithms of events is -0.5 or greater for samples from the log-Pearson Type III distribution, the SMEMAX procedure underestimates the magnitude of events with return periods of 50 yr …

Retention Of Gasification-Combustion Products By Corn, S. W. Sizemore, Otto J. Loewer, Joseph L. Taraba, I. J. Ross, G. M. White

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Shelled corn was dried in layers of 5.1 cm (2 in.) 10.2 cm (4 in.), and 15.2 cm (6 in.) using air heated with the exhaust from a corn-cob fueled gasification-combustion updraft furnace. The drying air entering and leaving the grain layers was sampled for particulate content to determine the percentage of total particulates trapped by the grain during drying. It was determined that an average of 25% of the total particulates in the drying air were retained by the grain. The large majority of those particulates retained were found in the bottom 5.1 cm (2 in.) of the grain …

Agricultural Engineering Energy Series

Many families are buying supplemental space heating units in an attempt to use heat only where it is needed and thus lower the total heating bill. lf you turn down your central heat thermostat and place such a unit in a room where the family spends most of their waking hours, heating bills may be reduced. Such savings appear to be significant, but each family first needs to carefully consider the safety risks and their energy savings potential as well as the lifestyle changes that might be necessary.

Structural Analysis And Solution Of Systems Of Algebraic Design Equations, N. (Neil) L. Book, W. F. Ramirez Jan 1984

Structural Analysis And Solution Of Systems Of Algebraic Design Equations, N. (Neil) L. Book, W. F. Ramirez

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new method for expressing the structure of a system of equations is developed using a type of occurrence matrix entitled the functionality matrix. The functionality matrix indicates not only the occurrence of variables in equations but also the functional form in which they occur. Since the difficulty of solving an equation for a variable is related to its functional form, analysis of the functionality matrix provides explicit information on the difficulty of solution of the solution of the equation. A methodology for the solution of design problems by digital computers is described. This methodology operates on the functionality matrix …

A Field And Laboratory Compaction Study Of A Mixture Of Retorted And Raw Oil Shale From The Means Project In Montgomery County, David L. Allen, Bobby W. Meade

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The oil shale retorting process will produce large volumes of spent shale and some raw oil shale that cannot he used in the retorting process. Consequently, it is anticipated that on-site disposal embankments will be constructed using these materials A report by Drnevich, et al. (1) has recommended that site-specific compaction studies be done at the start up of a mining and disposal operation. Holtz 12) has reported on a detailed study of the compaction characteristics of a western oil shale that had been retorted by the Paraho vertical retort process.

This study was performed to develop background data on …

Chemical stability and cation stoichiometry determine the applicability of LaCrO3 as a high‐temperature oxide electrode. A model for the behavior of acceptor‐doped LaCrO3, as a function of oxygen activity is proposed. The model is in agreement with experimental data on Mg‐doped LaCrO3. Stability regimes and compensation mechanisms at various oxygen activities and temperature are presented. Copyright © 1984, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved

Rutting, A Case Study (Us 23, 1.5 Miles North Of Louisa), James H. Havens, Gary W. Sharpe, David L. Allen, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This case study of rutting in an asphaltic concrete pavement makes recourse to trenching full width and full depth to expose and observe the entire cross section of the structure. Rutting occurred in the vicinity of Station 59+00 on US 23, 1.5 miles north of Louisa, during August and September 1983 when traffic was diverted onto newly constructed northbound lanes (without final surface and shouldering) while excavation into the hillside was completed for the southbound lanes. Earth movers crossed the northbound lanes going to and from a waste area. Coal trucks (Figures 1 and 2) slowed, stopped, and crept where …

Oxygen Activity Dependence Of The Electrical Conductivity Of Li‐Doped Cr2o3, R. F. Huang, A. K. Agarwal, Harlan U. Anderson Jan 1984

Oxygen Activity Dependence Of The Electrical Conductivity Of Li‐Doped Cr2o3, R. F. Huang, A. K. Agarwal, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electrical conductivity of Li‐doped Cr2O3 was investigated as a function of PO2, temperature, and dopant content. Results show that the electrical conductivity remains almost unchanged with decreasing P O2 in the high‐P O2 region but decreases rapidly at low P O2. A second phase was found in samples which contained more than 0.85 mol% Li. The results are explained by a model in which the concentration of charge carriers is dependent on the acceptor dopant and oxygen vacancy concentration. Copyright © 1984, Wiley Blackwell. Dynamics Of Twinning In Natural Α-Quartz, Alexander Aning, Manfred Wuttig Jan 1984

Dynamics Of Twinning In Natural Α-Quartz, Alexander Aning, Manfred Wuttig

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Finite amplitude internal friction experiments in α-quartz are described and interpreted in terms of the theory of nonlinear anelasticity. The theory predicts a linear relationship between the driving force of the excitation and the period of the auto modulation at its onset. This relation is substantiated by experiments performed with a natural α-quartz reed vibrating in flexure at resonance frequencies between 65 and 170 Hz in the temperature range of 162° and 224°C. The data suggests that Dauphiné twinning in α-quartz causes the auto modulation governed by an activation energy of 92 kJ mole. This activation energy characterizes short distance …

Generalized Root-Loci Theory For The Static Scherbius Drive, B. Lequesne, Aaron J. Miles Jan 1984

Generalized Root-Loci Theory For The Static Scherbius Drive, B. Lequesne, Aaron J. Miles

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Generalized root-loci techniques, developed in the mid 70's for squirrel cage motors, have been extended in the static Scherbius configuration to wound rotor, slip energy, recovery systems. This arrangement is now applied to large power drives in the 0.5 to 50 MW range. In this paper, general results applicable to all machines are presented for the open-loop control scheme, but only the sub synchronous mode of operation in which a voltage source type inverter is used is addressed. Distribution System Protection With Decentralized Generation Introduced Into The System, Behruz Fardanesh, Earl F. Richards

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cogeneration from renewable energy sources has been universally proposed as a partial alternative to the solution of our nation's energy problems. New technical, safety, and operational problems are introduced when this generation is placed into a distribution grid. Addressed is the problem of distribution system protection with the introduction of cogeneration sources and the changes and modifications which may be required in the application of present-day protection devices. A sample system is considered, and system protection and coordination with and without cogeneration has been calculated through a digital fault and system protection coordination program. The results indicate through the study …
