An Image Processing Software Package For The Laser Scanning Phase Modulation Microscope, William J. Murray Jun 1984

An Image Processing Software Package For The Laser Scanning Phase Modulation Microscope, William J. Murray

Computer Science Technical Reports

This thesis documents the most recent effort to develop a user-friendly image processing software package for the Laser Scanning Phase Modulation Microscope (LSPMM). The LSPMM is composed of three integrated subsystems, the Laser Scanning (LS) system, the Phase Modulation (PM) system, and Digital Image Acquisition (DIA) system. Under the control of the image processing software, the DIA system can receive and store the digital image data, display the image on a monochrome monitor, and process the image to provide the microscopist with quantitative information regarding the image. The implementation of this image processing software package required the specification of a …

Analysis Of Accidents Involving Breakaway-Cable-Terminal End Treatments, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, Tom Creasey

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report included an analysis of 50 accidents involving breakaway-cable-terminal (BCT) end treatments and 19 accidents involving median-breakaway-cable-terminal (BMCT) end treatments. The primary data base consisted of Kentucky accident records for the years 1980-82; with selected accidents included before 1980 and after 1982. An attempt was made to document each accident with a police report, photographs, and a maintenance repair form.

Results showed that the breakaway-cable-terminal end treatment performed properly in most accidents (72 percent); that is, the end treatment performed as it was designed with the wooden posts breaking away or the guardrail redirecting the vehicle. Only four impacts …

Survey Of Effectiveness Of Transportation Services (1984), Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this study was to measure the effectiveness of transportation services by means of a public opinion survey. Results from the mail survey were intended to provide administrators with quantitative measures so that emphasis would be based on the public's perception of specific programs. Questionnaires were mailed to a random sample of 800 licensed drivers in each of Kentucky's 12 highway districts for a total of 9,600 statewide. The total response rate was 51 percent for all districts, with 49 percent considered to be usable responses.

Results from the survey showed that 82 percent of the respondents were …

EXPLANATION OF THE TEST PROCEDURE General Tractors are tested at the University of Nebraska according to the Agricultural Tractor Test Code approved by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers or official Nebraska test procedure. The manufacturer selects the tractor to be tested and certifies that it is a stock model. Each tractor is equipped with the common power consuming accessories such as power steering, power lift pump, generator, etc., if available. Power consuming accessories may be disconnected only when the means for disconnecting can be reached from the operating station. An official representative of …

Model And Production Function For Irrigation Management, Derrel L. Martin, Darrell G. Watts, James R. Gilley Jun 1984

Model And Production Function For Irrigation Management, Derrel L. Martin, Darrell G. Watts, James R. Gilley

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

A simulation model was developed to estimate the effect of deficit irrigation upon crop yield. The model was designed to provide relative yield estimates for numerous combinations of irrigation system, crop growth and irrigation management parameters. A daily soil moisture balance was used to predict evaporation and transpiration from which crop yields were estimated. Gross irrigation water requirements were estimated from net irrigation requirements, irrigation efficiencies, irrigation system limitations, and effective rainfall. Crop production functions that use physically defined parameters were also developed to relate crop yields to gross irrigation requirements. The production functions worked well on a limited test …

Axisymmetric Thrust Augmenting Ejector With Discrete Primary Air Slot Nozzles, Steven G. Reznick, Milton E. Franke

AFIT Patents

A circular thrust augmenting ejector has an annular wall which defines a central passageway and a convergent contoured inlet section, a constant area cylindrical mixing section and a divergent conical diffuser outlet section. The inlet, mixing and outlet sections merge one into the next in axisymmetric serial relationship. The ejector also has a plurality of discrete primary nozzles arranged about the periphery of the annular wall at the entrance to the inlet section thereof for injecting a primary flow of high velocity air into the inlet section and thereby entraining a secondary flow of ambient air into the central passageway …

Hiring Practices For Skilled Craftsmen In The Construction Industry, Jimmy A. Off May 1984

Hiring Practices For Skilled Craftsmen In The Construction Industry, Jimmy A. Off

Graduate Research Papers

The building construction industry experiences wild fluctuations in demand. Additionally, the industry is characterized by a competitive bid structure. A high labor turnover rate is the natural consequence of these conditions. Compounding this problem is the building industry's highly labor intensive nature. Since contractors will perform the hiring process so frequently, their procedures must be able to identify the best qualified applicants.

The current economic recession has brought many construction firms to a point of near idleness. The unemployment rate among skilled craftsmen is high. This has created a buyer's market in which the contractors can choose the most qualified …
