Effect Of Grain Characteristics On Liquefaction Potential—In Search Of Standard Sand For Cyclic Strength, Isao Ishibashi Sep 1985

Effect Of Grain Characteristics On Liquefaction Potential—In Search Of Standard Sand For Cyclic Strength, Isao Ishibashi

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Since the original Monterey 0 sand, which had been used for cyclic triaxial testing system calibration, is not available any more, the search for an alternative sand was started. In order to provide useful information for the above purpose, liquefaction potentials were evaluated for Monterey 0 and 0/30 sands and for ASTM Test Method for Compressive Strength of Hydraulic Cement Mortars (Using 2-in. or 50-mm Cube) (C 109) Ottawa sands from various sources. The results clearly indicated that the liquefaction potential was very sensitive to slight changes in material properties (mean grain size, coefficient of uniformity, sphericity, and volume decrease …

Utilization Of Electronic Spreadsheets For Laboratory Data Analysis, C. F. Maguire Iii, William W. Durgin Aug 1985

Utilization Of Electronic Spreadsheets For Laboratory Data Analysis, C. F. Maguire Iii, William W. Durgin

Office of the Provost Scholarship

The utilization of business spreadsheets for laboratory data manipulation is discussed. The spreadsheet, LOTUS 1-2-3, is presently being utilized to store and analyze data obtained from a deep cavity resonator type apparatus. Methodology for the analysis, from non dimensionalization of parameters, to relevant plotting of data pairs, is presented. All discussions are based upon current theory, and laboratory observations of flow induced resonance in deep cavities.

Determinants Of Acceptance Of Computer Mediated Communication System, Computerized Conferencing & Communications Center, Starr Roxanne Hiltz, Elaine B. Kerr, Kenneth Johnson, Murray Turoff

Computerized Conferencing and Communications Center Reports

Acceptance of Computer-Mediated communication Systems (CMCS) by managers and professionals corresponds to its incorporation into their daily patterns of communication and work. Acceptance includes at least three inter-related dimensions: amount of use, subjective satisfaction with the process of using the system, and a perception that system use has positive impacts upon productivity.

Pre-use and follow-up questionnaires were distributed to 150- 250 new users of four different CMCS. Three are conferencing systems, designed to support "group work." They differ in terms of comprehensiveness or complexity of design, and size and nature of the user communities; COM/KOM, a Swedish system with mostly …

New Specimen Design For Studying The Growth Of Small Fatigue Cracks With Surface Acoustic Waves, Blair London Aug 1985

New Specimen Design For Studying The Growth Of Small Fatigue Cracks With Surface Acoustic Waves, Blair London

Materials Engineering

The study of small surface fatigue cracks in AISI 4140 quenched and tempered steel by a nondestructive surface acoustic wave technique is summarized. A novel cantilevered bending, plate-type fatigue specimen is described that is compatible with the acoustic method. Small cracks are initiated from a 25-μm deep surface pit produced by an electrospark machine. The importance of studying these

Guidelines For The Use Of Protected/Permissive Left-Turn Phasing, Kenneth R. Agent Aug 1985

Guidelines For The Use Of Protected/Permissive Left-Turn Phasing, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The objective of this study was to develop guidelines that may be used to aid the traffic engineer in deciding whether protected/permissive (permissive) phasing is appropriate to use at a given location. An inventory identified 58 intersections in Kentucky where permissive phasing was used. Characteristics of these intersections were related to accident data to determine the effect permissive phasing has had on p.eft-turn and total accidents.

Left-turn accidents increased dramatically when permissive phasing replaced protected-only (exclusive) phasing and when it was used at approaches where the speed limit was over 45 mph. There were no substantial changes in left-turn and …

A procedure is developed for the design of amplifiers to meet specified gain and bandwidth figures. The number of required operational amplifier stages is minimised. A figure of merit is introduced to determine if a particular operational amplifier can be used to satisfy a given set of specifications.

Biomass Gasifier Combustor, Frederick A. Payne Jul 1985

Biomass Gasifier Combustor, Frederick A. Payne

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Patents

The present invention is directed to a biomass gasifier combustor which operates by gasification and combustion of the biomass to produce a clean effluent gas which can be used directly for grain drying or other applications where thermal energy is required. The biomass gasifier combustor burns crop residue clean enough so that the combustion gases can be used directly for grain drying without the need for a heat exchanger to isolate the combustion gases from the drying air. The biomass gasifier combustor includes a screw feeder tube having a screw feeder disposed therein. The screw feeder forces the biomass into …

Problem Identification For Highway Safety Plan, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent Jul 1985

Problem Identification For Highway Safety Plan, Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

An annual highway safety program is proposed each year for the State of Kentucky in order to comply with Section 402, Title 23 of the United States Code. This program includes the identification, programming, budgeting, and evaluation of safety projects. This report is the sixth in a series of annual reports which have been prepared as the problem identification portion of Kentucky's Annual Highway Safety Plan.

In the past, the approach to problem identification has been to identify problem areas in the 18 highway safety program areas (standards). While the search for problems in each of these standard areas will …

Storage Of Burley Tobacco In Bales And Bundles, Linus R. Walton, M. E. Casada, Joseph L. Taraba, James H. Casada, W. H. Henson Jr., Larry D. Swetnam Jul 1985

Storage Of Burley Tobacco In Bales And Bundles, Linus R. Walton, M. E. Casada, Joseph L. Taraba, James H. Casada, W. H. Henson Jr., Larry D. Swetnam

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Bales and bundles of burley tobacco were stored for seven months from spring to fall. Leaves darkened during storage at all moisture levels and stalk positions with the exception of the bottom stalk position, which darkened only slightly. There was no difference in color change and dry weight loss between burley tobacco in bales and bundles. Normal and high moisture bales and bundles were often graded as unsound because of a deviant odor caused by bacterial activity. A bale weight loss of about 8% occurred at normal moisture with the loss being divided evenly between moisture and dry weight losse.

Minimum Probability Of Electron-Hole Pair Generation By Blackbody Radiation, Cheng-Hsiao Wu Jul 1985

Minimum Probability Of Electron-Hole Pair Generation By Blackbody Radiation, Cheng-Hsiao Wu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using the small-perturbation assumption that all the useful work is in the form of electron-hole pairs when photons from a blackbody radiation source are incident on a quantum device, we derive the minimum probability of generation of one or more pairs of electron holes. Using the Planck radiation formula for the solar spectrum at 6000 K and for the quantum device at 300 K, this minimum probability is about 0.8 at low photon frequency and approaches the limiting value of 0.95 at high frequency. Its relation to maximum efficiency of a quantum device is discussed.

High Discharge Rate Characteristics Of Nickel-Cadmium Batteries For Pulse Load Filtering, Gregory M. Gearing, Michael B. Cimino, David H. Fritts, John F. Leonard, Anthony J. Terzuoli Jr. Jul 1985

High Discharge Rate Characteristics Of Nickel-Cadmium Batteries For Pulse Load Filtering, Gregory M. Gearing, Michael B. Cimino, David H. Fritts, John F. Leonard, Anthony J. Terzuoli Jr.

Faculty Publications

Several tests of specially fabricated nickel-cadmium batteries having circular disk type electrodes were considered. These batteries were evaluated as filter elements between a constant current power supply and a five hertz pulsed load demanding approximately twice the power supply current during the load on portion of the cycle. Short tests lasting 10,000 cycles were conducted at up to a 21 C rate and an equivalent energy density of over 40 Joules per pound. In addition, two batteries were subjected to 107 charge/discharge cycles, one at a 6.5 C rate and the other at a 13 C rate. Assuming an …

Identification Of Defect Centers In Hg1-XCdXTe Using Their Energy Ievel Composition Dependence, Charles W. Myles, P. F. Williams, R. A. Chapman, E. G. Bylander Jun 1985

Identification Of Defect Centers In Hg1-XCdXTe Using Their Energy Ievel Composition Dependence, Charles W. Myles, P. F. Williams, R. A. Chapman, E. G. Bylander

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We have extended the Kobayashi, Sankey, and Dow [Phys. Rev. B 25,6367 (1982)] theory of deep levels in Hg1-xCdxTe to include (vacancy, impurity) nearest-neighbor pairs. In qualitative agreement with the results obtained by these workers for isolated point defects, we find that the composition dependences (dE /dx) of the defect energy levels associated with such complexes depend on the site occupied by the impurity atom. Furthermore, we find that the composition dependences of some of the defect levels produced by such a complex are very different than the dE /dx of levels associated with …
