Multidimensional Scaling Analysis Of Simulated Air Combat Maneuvering Performance Data, Donald J. Polzella, Gary B. Reid Jan 1989

Multidimensional Scaling Analysis Of Simulated Air Combat Maneuvering Performance Data, Donald J. Polzella, Gary B. Reid

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper describes the decomposition of air combat maneuvering by means of multidimensional scaling (MDS). MDS analyses were applied to performance data obtained from expert and novice pilots during simulated air-to-air combat. The results of these analyses revealed that the performance of expert pilots is characterized by advantageous maneuverability and intelligent energy management. It is argued that MDS, unlike simpler metrics, permits the investigator to achieve greater insights into the underlying structure associated with performance of a complex task.

Multidimensional Scaling Analysis Of Simulated Air Combat Maneuvering Performance Data Ii: A Follow-On Study, Donald J. Polzella, Gary B. Reid

Psychology Faculty Publications

Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was applied to performance data obtained from expert and novice pilots during simulated air-to-air combat. The analyses revealed the principal performance dimensions to be TACTICAL POSITION (offensive versus defensive), TACTICS ("energy" versus "angle"), and TYPE OF MANEUVERING (low energy versus high energy). High-skilled combat performance was found to be dependent on the interaction between position advantage, intelligent management of kinetic and potential energies, and maneuverability.

Optical Recording Aspects Of Rf Magnetron Sputtered Iron-Garnet Films, J.P. Krumme, V. Doormann, P. Hansen, H. Baumgart, J. Petruzzello, M.P.A. Viegers Jan 1989

Optical Recording Aspects Of Rf Magnetron Sputtered Iron-Garnet Films, J.P. Krumme, V. Doormann, P. Hansen, H. Baumgart, J. Petruzzello, M.P.A. Viegers

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The intrinsic magneto-optical readout performance in reflection is calculated for bismuth and cobalt-substituted iron-garnet films on a multilayer interference mirror at 800-, 633-, 488-, and 420-nm wavelengths and is compared with that of a trilayer medium composed of an antireflection layer, a rare-earth transition-metal film, and a metallic mirror. It is found, when disregarding inhomogeneities, like irregular domain shape, ripple of the magnetic anisotropy, and surface roughness, that iron garnets are superior to rare-earth transition-metal films at blue to near-ultraviolet wavelengths if operated at thicknesses where optical interference occurs in the magnetic layer. Optical transmittance at these thicknesses is sufficiently …

Nanosecond Optical Quenching Of Photoconductivity In A Bulk Gaas Switch, M. S. Mazzola, K. H. Schoenbach, V. K. Lakdawala, S. T. Ko

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Persistent photoconductivity in copper-compensated, silicon-doped semi-insulating gallium arsenide with a time constant as large as 30 µs has been excited by sub-band-gap laser radiation of photon energy greater than 1 eV. This photoconductivity has been quenched on a nanosecond time scale by laser radiation of photon energy less than 1 eV. The proven ability to turn the switch conductance on and off on command, and to scale the switch to high power could make this semiconductor material the basis of an optically controlled pulsed-power closing and opening switch.

Performance And Design Of Vegetative Filters For Feedlot Runoff Treatment, Elbert C. Dickey, D. H. Vanderholm Jan 1989

Performance And Design Of Vegetative Filters For Feedlot Runoff Treatment, Elbert C. Dickey, D. H. Vanderholm

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Installation of a zero-discharge, runoff-control system is one method for solving potential water pollution problems from many feedlot operations. Even though the zero-discharge system is required by regulation in several states, this approach may be economically prohibitive for many small operations. An alternative is to install a vegetative filter system to adequately control the runoff so that violations of water quality standards will not occur during storm runoff. Vegetative filters are systems in which a vegetative area such as pasture, grassed waterways, or even cropland is used for treating feedlot runoff by settling, filtration, dilution, adsorption of pollutants and infiltration. …

Application Of Distributed Knowledge Bases In Intelligent Manufacturing, Cihan H. Dagli, Gerald E. Hoffman Jan 1989

Application Of Distributed Knowledge Bases In Intelligent Manufacturing, Cihan H. Dagli, Gerald E. Hoffman

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The authors consider independent knowledge bases operating on separate work stations networked together within the domain of knowledge-based scheduling. The scheduling problem is addressed through distributed knowledge bases that have an ability to pass information back and forth between small knowledge bases functioning at different decision-making levels. A small manufacturing plant is conceptualized in order to experiment with this process. The general outline and areas of the manufacturing shop are shown. The domain specific area for the knowledge bases is to optimize the scheduling of work at each work station in order to meet a weekly quota. Automatic guided vehicle, …

Scatchard Analysis Of Methane Sulfinic Acid Production From Dimethyl Sulfoxide: A Method To Quantify Hydroxyl Radical Formation In Physiologic Systems, Charles F. Babbs, David W. Griffin Jan 1989

Scatchard Analysis Of Methane Sulfinic Acid Production From Dimethyl Sulfoxide: A Method To Quantify Hydroxyl Radical Formation In Physiologic Systems, Charles F. Babbs, David W. Griffin

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

A major impediment to the confirmation of free radical mechanisms in pathogenesis is a lack of direct, chemical evidence that oxygen centered free radicals actually arise in living tissues in quantities sufficient to cause serious damage. This investigation was conducted to validate the use of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a quantitative molecular probe for the generation of hydroxyl radicals (HO*) under physiologic conditions. Reaction of HO* with DMSO produces methane sulfinic acid (MSA) as a primary product, which can be detected by a simple colorimetric assay. To develop a method for estimating total HO* production, we studied two model systems: …

Consequences Of Valley Filtering On Abrupt Junction Algaas/Gaas Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors, Amitava Das, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 1989

Consequences Of Valley Filtering On Abrupt Junction Algaas/Gaas Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors, Amitava Das, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Electron transport in AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistors with compositionally abrupt emitter‐base junctions is examined. Transport across the abrupt emitter‐base heterojunction is treated quantum mechanically, and the Monte Carlo technique is used to study transport through the base. Although there is a sizeable population of upper‐valley electrons in the bulk emitter, the AlGaAs/GaAs heterojunction is found to favor the injection of Γ‐valley electrons into the base. This valley filtering effect enhances device performance by reducing base transit time, but quantum mechanical tunneling lowers the average energy of the injected flux which increases base transit time. The design of a heterojunction bipolar …

Quantitative Effects Of Iron Chelators On Hydroxyl Radical Production By The Superoxide-Driven Fenton Raction, Jean Blair Smith, Joanne C. Cusumano, Charles F. Babbs Jan 1989

Quantitative Effects Of Iron Chelators On Hydroxyl Radical Production By The Superoxide-Driven Fenton Raction, Jean Blair Smith, Joanne C. Cusumano, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Iron bound to certain chelators is known to promote the conversion of superoxide radicals (O2) to hydroxyl radicals (HO') by the superoxide-driven Fenton reaction. The production of HO' by various iron chelates was studied using the reaction of dimethyl sulfoxide and HO' to produce methane sulphinic acid. Methane sulphinic acid was quantified by use of a simple colorimetric assay and used to determine the amounts of HO' produced. Superoxide was generated from 200 M hypoxanthine and 0.05 U/ml xanthine oxidase in the presence of 0-100 M iron and 100 M of each chelator. The results of this preliminary investigation illustrate …

Effect Of Oxygen Concentration On The Formation Of Malondialdehyde-Like Material In A Model Of Tissue Ischemia And Reoxygenation, Steven C. Salaris, Charles F. Babbs Jan 1989

Effect Of Oxygen Concentration On The Formation Of Malondialdehyde-Like Material In A Model Of Tissue Ischemia And Reoxygenation, Steven C. Salaris, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to explore the functional relationship between oxygen concentration during tissue reoxygenation after ischemia and the extent of postischemic lipid peroxidation, an indicator of reoxygenation injury. Excised rat liver or kidney tissue was rendered ischemic for 1 h at 37°C, minced into 1 mm3 fragments, and then reoxygenated for 1 h in flasks of buffered salt solution containing various amounts of oxygen. Production of malondialdehyde-like material (MDA) was measured to indicate lipid peroxidation. MDA production was minimal at oxygen tensions less than 10 mmHg, increased sharply from 10 to 50 mmHg, and plateaued at approximately 100 mmHg. …

Lethal Hydroxyl Radical Production In Paraquat-Treated Plants, Charles F. Babbs, Jo Ann Pham, Ronald C. Coolbaugh Jan 1989

Lethal Hydroxyl Radical Production In Paraquat-Treated Plants, Charles F. Babbs, Jo Ann Pham, Ronald C. Coolbaugh

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Bipyridinium herbicides, including paraquat and diquat, are believed to act by generating highly reactive, oxygen-centered free radicals within chloroplasts when treated plants are exposed to sunlight. This hypothesis has not yet been confirmed by direct chemical measurements of specific free radicals. We studied paraquat-treated plants using a new method able to detect and quantify formation of highly reactive and deleterious hydroxyl radicals (HO*), in which dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is used as a molecular probe. DMSO is oxidized by HO* to form the stable, nonradical compound, methane sulfinic acid, which can be easily extracted from plant tissue and measured spectrophotometrically. Initial …

Effective Minority‐Carrier Hole Confinement Of Si‐Doped, N+‐N Gaas Homojunction Barriers, H. L. Chuang, M. E. Klausmeier-Brown, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom Jan 1989

Effective Minority‐Carrier Hole Confinement Of Si‐Doped, N+‐N Gaas Homojunction Barriers, H. L. Chuang, M. E. Klausmeier-Brown, Michael R. Melloch, Mark S. Lundstrom

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

he electrical performance of Si‐doped n+‐n GaAs homojunction barriers grown by molecular‐beam epitaxy (MBE) is characterized and analyzed. We employed a successive etch technique to study hole injection currents in GaAs n+‐n‐p+ solar cells. The results of the analysis show that minority‐carrier holes in our MBE‐grown material have a mobility of 293 cm2/V s for an n‐type Si‐doping level of 1.5×1016 cm−3 at 300 K. The interface recombination velocity for these homojunction barriers is estimated to be less than 1×103 cm/s, and it appears to be comparable to that recently observed for …
